Question for all you TRD owners and fan boys

Just had a first TRD Pro Hybrid experience. Sold some side steps on OfferUp and this dude pulled up all ninja-like. Couldn’t hear his sneak attack. As he turned his truck around the engine kicked on. All that’s normal. The abnormal part for me was that when it kicked on, the roar of that motor was a little funny, unexpected and out of place. Almost like the sound was being pumped out as filler and there was a sub generating that rumble. Then it was the sound of the hybrid system doing its clicking and clacking, the ebrake locking, etc. I couldn’t tell if the engine had just shut down or if the whole truck was turned off. It was such an unexpected moment. Kind of like when the Seahawks got accused of pumping additional noise into the stadium so it could assist in breaking some noise and seismic records.
Anyways, can anyone explain what I heard? I’m dying to know how that motor can generate those noises. Are we talking Bluetooth connected exhaust?

TRD Pro has slightly louder exhaust. I have it on my Limited and the startup is way louder than idle.

 

The v8 sound is fake. So you heard correctly. They “pump” out a fake sound. To some it sounds alright, to others it’s absurd. I’m in the middle. I think with a good aftermarket exhaust it can sound better.

 

All the noises are explained in the owners manual, I hear it’s a real page turner.

 

Pumping in fake V8 exhaust notes just adds to the poser experience. Kind of like putting on shiny TRD skid plates when your truck never goes off road to impress the other truck owners in the gated community.

When you guys say "fake sound", you guys are saying that it's a V8 sound coming from the speakers, right? Also true that you have to take it to the dealer to disable, correct?

 

It is a lot of new noises coming from a hybrid truck that at some point we will all get used to hearing if not on our truck on others at stop lights and in parking lots. What you will not get used to unless you own a new hybrid or even the new twin turbo V 6 is the fun of driving these trucks. I owned a Tacoma before this truck and test drove 6 2nd gen trucks with the V 8. The Tacoma was ok to drive as a daily but really shined up in the woods. The second gens were fine and had a ton more power than the Tacoma but neither of them were even close to as much fun as the 3rd gen has been for me. So yes it may sound different or weird but go drive one and tell us what you think of them.

 

Technically it's not "fake" engine noise. There is a transducer/mic in the engine bay and they amplify/enhance the sound and send it through the speakers.

 

I just passed on what I have been told. I stand corrected. It is good to know that at least some of the engine sounds are legit.

Sooo like if a dude photoshops out his Adam's apple and 5 o'clock shadow, and throws on some big boobs in his profile pic for online hookups, technically it's not "fake"... just an enhanced transducer?

I’m not going to deny that a V8 with exhaust sounds nice. I’ve had V8 Tundras with and without an exhaust and they all “drove” the same which is why I chose not to spend $1000+ just to make my truck sound a little better on my last 2 Tundras. My 2022 Tundra sounds great to my ears and no one ever got in my truck and questioned any noises. It sounds subtle and powerful which the truck is….very powerful. To me personally what’s the difference if a better sound comes from in the truck or outside from a pipe. They are both enhanced noises from a stock truck.

 

I did recently see mention of the carista and phone app, I'm a 2.5gen owner. Is this carista available for me? All I'm really wanting to do is change my blinker to 5 or 7 blinks instead of the default 3. I saw mention of that sometime ago and never really followed up on that. I guess I should now.

 

what is the difference in the trd pro exhaust and stock other hybrids. I noticed a sequoia trd pro a couple weeks ago started up next to us in a field (Easter egg hunt for kiddos) and is sounded different than my 2024 hybrid tundra platinum I thought it was just dual exhaust tips but I didn’t get to ask them if they changed mufflers or something looked bone stock so I assumed maybe trd’s have a different cat back exhaust? Curious if so what is part number

 

The Pro exhaust is dual tip and deletes the resonator.

that’s what i noticed when getting mine service today that behind the tire just under the frame the pro is slick tubing like the rest instead of the giant resonator amazing how much difference that bit makes in the sound levels.

 

Wait, let me get this straight.

Toyota designed the current gen to “magnify” the sound of the engine with speakers inside the cab to make the engine sound louder than it actually is?

Why?

 

I think there is a big difference. Aftermarket exhausts for the V8 typically are less restrictive and allow you to hear the V8’s “true” sound compared to stock. At least this is my understanding and please, anyone correct me if I’m wrong.

Different than using electronic speakers to magnify a sound.

 

I've been on this great Tundra forum for a bit. I deliberately avoid commenting on the new gen anymore, but fake manipulated V8 from a V6 is fake. Out...

I don’t get into these ridiculous feuds with others on the internet.

I’ve been a Tundra owner since it first hit the market back in 2000. Own 1st and 2nd gen Tundras. I planned on buying this new gen when it was first announced but was disappointed in the looks and build.

So, my wife and I decided to get a 2020 instead based on the reliability track record and looks.

My beef is not with what others decide to do with their money, it’s with Toyota and the regulations determining the direction of the auto industry.

I honestly hope that this new gen ends up living up to the Toyota name so I can get a third Tundra in the future when they work all the kinks out and it proves to be reliable. It would be cool to own all gens!

 

Just because I think spending $70,000 on a truck to impress the neighbors is a waste doesn’t mean I can’t afford one. I’d rather put money into investments or pick up another home to rent out.

I am disappointed in Toyota putting out such a poor quality vehicle while still having issues into the 4th year of this generation. These are no better than Ford.

That way when I pick up one of your garage queens I can count on it for years after. Make sure to keep those skid plates shiny & unscratched.

Right now I wouldn’t buy one new or used. Maybe in 2030 or so when they work out the bugs.

 

They've only been out 2 1/2 years. I bought mine because I like new stuff and knew it'd pull my enclosed trailer better than my 2 previous Tundras. I think any of brand truck has issues. Too much technology in them.
