Can anyone tell me the purpose of the mesh and padding in the bottom of the air intake housing? critter got in one side and destroyed. The white padding is between 2 layers of black cloth. I see another post of same issue but no one really identified the purpose of the padding. Is it just sound deadening?

I believe it’s sound deadening. The plastic tray and the fabric are weld along some areas. Main tray is attached to the intake housing by 4 pedestal type plastic welds. I think if you take them out you will just hear more turbo noise if any.

I thought it was part of the evap system? no vapors back through the intake. I thought it had carbon in it. I learn something new everyday. I removed that flow restrictor within the hour of owning my truck and all of our other cars.

Sound dampening. *Be super careful - that debris gets sucked through the turbo and can throw it off balance the rest goes thru and clogs the Intercooler. I’d have it checked with a bore scope before driving any more. (( turbo failures on here from same issue ))

how easy is this to access and perform. Looks like you completely took out a part. Is this self explanatory or do you have any tip and tricks?

Dealer was one that discovered as part of service check. Air filter was not chewed and fully intact so should have blocked any debris.

I pulled the airbox assembly, the tube into the fender comes off the box, that where I put the screen.

That's what it is on the 2nd gens. Sound deadening doesn't make much sense, but I've been wrong before.
