LOL, I have had turbo vehicle for 30-40 years, and I have never blown one up. I had Nissans historic SR20dets, RB26dets, a Super charged Frontier, twin turbo Raptors, turbo STIs and have never blown one up ever and I drifted the sr powered 240sx. Point for point after owning tons of turbo vehicles they will tend to last longer, are fairly cheaper to maintain from oil changes/ filters, and require less maintenance than their naturally aspirated counter points. You may love the sounds a big old v8 makes but I will take off and leave any of them even the 6.2s in Toyotas little 3.4 liter twin turbo v6.

If you know about turbos you would rather have them than not.

Have you ever owned a turbo vehicle not one you made but one that came that way from the factory. I do my own oil changes, spark plugs, and replacement parts. I run Motul oil in the STIs and wife's HO 2.3 liter turbo 4. I do know since I work on them myself and do not modify vehicles.

v8s sound cool, and I have owned several but they are not all that. I don't run 87 lol, only premium or mid grade fuels only.

Yes, I’ve owned a factory turbo vehicle - not interested in doing so again.

 

by who the internet trolls that say they do? I have owned 2 of them and never had any trouble out of the head gaskets. I ran a metal head gasket on the sr20det and it was high boosted to 23lbs. I bought the 16 sti I own new, and it has 23k miles on it. Burns zero oil and would walk 90 percent of the vehicles on the road today. The internet is for negative bad stories, I believe those incidents do happen but usually it is from owners who do not know how to maintain them or just abuse them.

 

The irony of this discussion happening while you’re responding simultaneously in another thread with a new member having trouble with their turbo on a brand new sequoia and it seems like you indicate the problem is them using the fuel spec’d by Toyota… does she know they are less maintenance than the 3UR?

I think it's comical there has to be a thread discussing non-failures/major issues to further confirmation bias of any make or model. I will say of the TRX, Raptor, and Porsche forums, only the Tundra has discussions like this one. For 99% of you, your Tundra will be relatively problem free of major mechanical issues if you follow preventative maintenance under daily driving use cases. Just enjoy your truck whether it's a gen 1,2,2.5, or 3.

No. You’ll notice in my previously posted list of things the 3rd gen went backwards on, the sound of the engine was nowhere to be found on it. Thats because I could not care less how it sounds. I’m running stock exhaust. I care that I’m driving the absolute best truck to not need a new one for a VERY long time, even if I put rough miles on it, which I do.

I don’t want to be in the feedback loop of constantly trading in a truck that all manufacturers are intent on keeping you in. My truck meets the list of needs I posted and will meet them over a longer time frame than any other truck currently offered in the segment. The way I see it, I’m free of the Matrix for as long as I want to keep this thing.

Same for our LX. Only 178k, but I’ve done nothing but routine maintenance, and we put it to work, too.

 

No reasonable person buys a TRX, Raptor, or Porsche expecting it to last 200k-300k miles.

 

I think it’s safe to assume that no matter what Gen you drive there are going to be haters regardless. It’s human nature to say this is best because I own it. Drive what you want and be happy. No one needs to justify their purchase to anyone, especially people they don’t know on the internet. You guys will keep going full circle one which Gen is better or which does what better. In the grand scheme of things it really makes no difference at the end of the day. I love my 3rd gen and happy to be in a position to own one. And if I was in need of a tundra when the second gen was out, I would have bought it too. Don’t have any problems with the second gen. All generations of Toyotas have their pros and cons but we all gravitate towards Toyota for some reason or another.

 

Yes this, people always jump on the next generation being worse than the last. I trashed the gen 2 raptors as a Gen 1 owner until I eventually owned a gen 2 raptor then I was cool with them. Once this 3rd gen has around 5-7 model years out then people will warm up to them more.

2011 Plt 4X4 5.7 528,000 miles, two fuel pumps, and one high side AC hose, finally blew right side head gasket and traded in
2016 SR5 4X4 5.7 382,000 miles, one fuel pump, and it too blew head gasket on right side and traded in on 2024 PLT

 

That’s a lot of trouble free miles

They are probably in Mexico now still running for some one I didn't really call the fuel pumps major failures, just a weakness of driving so many miles and probably a couple or multiple time too low on fuel.

 

23’ here with a little over 16k with zero issues, purchased dec 22’. That includes pulling my new trailer all over Utah mountains.

 

Enough Gen3 talk. Let's talk more about Gen2's and Volvo's.

 

Surprise trip came up. 2000 miles roundtrip. Picking up a 6x12 loaded UHaul in Ft Lauderdale. I'll be glad to have the extra power, comfort, smoother transmission and features of the Gen 3.

 

2022 Limited CM Longer bed!

7,500 kms (4,660 miles) - 20 months so not too much driving but mostly towing. Just the usual issues and recalls (currently 2 outstanding recalls). I am waiting till I get 5 recalls to save repeat trips to the dealership!

Once when my wife went to use it and the dash lit up like a Christmas tree! She abandoned the attempt and took her car! She really hasn't wanted to drive it since.

I would put my Gen 3 in the "Meh" category!

Actually, she is okay with it but when she needed to use it, the tech let her down. I couldn't find a reason for the light show afterwards but that hasn't helped the concerns about it just not working on any given day.

 

Not trying to be argumentative at all but I think any of the newer high end cars can "light up" at worst or be a learning curve at best.
I've got a new BMW with everything on it. My wife hates it and would sell it immediately if it was up to her.

 

No need to worry! Her car is a new VW ID.4 and it is annoyingly tech heavy and she manages that with very little complaining.

When all the idiot lights and buzzers came on when she started the Tundra, she just couldn't trust it while she was taking a group to the airport. I haven't seen this issue pop up again since then.

The only thing I can think of is that her FOB (rarely used) might be to blame?

 

Im not a big mpg guy but just went to IN and got 22+ mpg

I was like damn , my 2016 was 15-16 in that same drive, best I’ve ever done in any tundra out of the 5 I’ve had . I wasn’t really trying or in eco mode or anything either , just driving normal

 

Glad you’re able to capture back some of the $70k purchase price.
