Today I learned about the FJ manual transfer case swap/mod because of @dittothat
It definitely seems doable, maybe a down the road project. I would definitely try to do the manual front diff actuator so I could have fun in 2low locked!

Hahaha have you watched their hbo series?!! It’s where that video came from. I think it’s basically their first album so watching it makes the songs even better.
You also ever notice almost all jack black movies have Kyle in them?

Grill, front bumper, and the specialty fender flares that mold down into a mud flap are from the one-off Ivan Stewart themed trucks Toyota was doing. Whether it's legit or not, no idea, but it's got all the parts. I think they also had a badge in the dash or something, but I may be confusing them w/the Darryl Waltrip themed one-off trucks.

It's purely stance, it has a stance problem. It's hard to pull off 18s or 20s and skinnier tires with that much fender gap. From an aesthetics perspective, fender gap must be proportional to tire height for "sport" stance, regardless whether you're running something that skinny, or something as fat as 33s. Too much gap and it looks nosebleed. Gap equal to tire height looks sport-custom. Too little gap and it looks dragstrip ready. Negative gap and it looks bagged/notched/channeled. This is almost universal in all vehicles.

Sport on 1st, bagged/channeled on 2nd. Lazy chops because I didn't want to spend more than 3-4 mins.

It’ll kill me til I’m dead to understand why oh why in the fuck they didn’t just make a FGT with a v8 and a manual tranny. They made a stepside, which means they had extra resources to throw away……
    :annoyed:

Pardon my 2wd havin-ass ignorance, but aren’t all transfer cases manual? You aren’t stuck in all-time 4wd are ya? I mean, can’t you get 2wd locked from being in 2wd with your rear locker turned on? Or am I missin somethin?

No most transfer cases are activated by a electric actuator.
If I did a manual actuated front, i could be in 2h-2low locked or not.
The video seems like a lot of customé fab work, doable, but not what I’m looking to do right now.

Terminator edition.. but no transfer case edition :notsure:

Most transfer cases are switched using a button and an actuator. This swap gives you a handle in the cab that goes directly to the shift fork in the t-case

So you don’t have an option to switch into 2lo or 2hi? I understand the diff between electronically actuated and manual actuated, but still missing the point, since your locker is controlled completely separately.

Again it’s more about reliability with that swap, dude somehow smashed his actuator on the rubicon trail………
So it eliminates a weak point in the already bullet proof system, and gives people with front diffs a way to do other cool stuff. Again doable but not on my 2 circle radar of things to do

For some reason Toyota never paired a V8 to a manual transmission as far as I know. Even their Lexus V8 sports cars were always automatic. Highly frustrating because the SC400 with 1uz makes a fantastic drift car, but it has the wrong transmission :frusty:

Like Toasty said, more electronics = more problems. I've seen a fair amount of 2000+ Toyotas either get stuck in or out of 4wd because the actuator freezes up. Also 2wd locked is decent, but if you can get into 2lo locked its even better. It'll make the truck a real burnout machine:burnrubber:

There was another advantage to swapping to a manual tcase that someone mentioned to me but I don't really remember what it is. I know if you decided to 4wd swap that would be the tcase you want because it doesn't require an ECU swap and a bunch of wiring

He's talking about using the 4Lo gearing of the transfer case, without activating the front diff. Aka the 2Lo Mod

So basically you're in RWD, but the transfer case is in Lo gear, so you're just adding a layer of gearing to your arsenal to be used whether or not in 4wd.

The locker is independent of all this.
    As is your transmission position

Actuator on my old f150 froze when some dude was test driving it to buy it off me. Guy, I’d estimate, had never driven a 4x before because he dropped it in 4hi in a SoCal parking lot and then proceeds to take a turn. Looks at me and goes “what’s that?” “The truck is jumping..”

Goes to put it back in 2hi and nothing. Tried tapping but nothing. Was firm on my $3500 price tag until then; had to drop it to 3200 . Guy drove it from Carlsbad to Glendale in 4hi. Good truck but it was time. Adios F150. :hattip:

I had some asshat break the manual hub on my 4Runner while test driving it to buy. Apparently did same thing and then he didn’t buy it.
