Tailgate assist lowering shock

2010 tundra tailgate assist lowering shock 66140-0C010
No longer available from Toyota. My new to me 2010 has almost worn out and I like the
feature so I'd like to replace.
Can anyone help me with finding replacement??

It would appear my search ability on RockAuto was flawed. I found it under a different name. On it's way.
It's called a Lift Support - nothing to do with tailgate anything.......

 

I cancelled rockauto and bought on Amazon.ca as it's cheaper. Thanks so very much for the guidance!!

 

Nothing to add here, but wouldn't this little gas charged strut be the same for ANY Tundra from 2007 to 2020?

Is Toyota really not able to provide replacement parts for a vehicle only 4 years old??

 

Things like this are usually provided by toyota venders anyways, But as @b6graham provided a clearly well priced
replacement from Amazon. I found on RockAuto as well, but for me in Canada the shipping/duties makes it 45% more
expensive so I just paid more on Amazon.ca and saved the hassle as well as getting it tomorrow, not next week.

 

Stabilus is probably the top worldwide provider of these type of struts. they've been doing it a long long time

 

I understand Toyota does not manufacture all of the parts for their vehicles. My beef is with the fact that one can apparently not get a replacement part from the dealer for a vehicle which is only 4 years old.

What if someone has a warranty claim? Toyota says they have to install some aftermarket part instead of OE replacement?

Just seems weird. Not that it matters much on a part like this, but what else isn't available?

 

Lots of things from lots of MFG’s. A buddy mine has a newer Ram with a transmission that just took a dump. Covered under warranty but there are only a couple of those transmissions available anywhere, so they are going to install a junkyard transmission instead. Under warranty… junkyard parts.. cuz OEM’s barely have enough parts to keep up with new production. It’s gonna take a while to get that production chain ball rolling again.

 

Uh yeah. My wife bought a jeep, so I am well aware for how "Stellantis" runs things. They just can't keep replacement parts in stock because of the huge number of specific failures their vehicles suffer. They (or their suppliers) still produce the parts, you just can't get them because everyone else needs them as well.

The info above suggests this OE gas strut is NLA, which is completely different form a national backorder.

 

I’m not disagreeing with you that it’s kinda ridiculous. But it’s not just car parts for Stellantis motors; I have unexpected and intermittent delays and shortages on all sorts of parts and hardware that have generally been available without issue for the last decade. Now it’s a guessing game whenever I order something from any of my suppliers.

Producers, suppliers, manufacturers have all had to make adjustments that last couple of years just to get products out the door. That usually involves a little bit of triage, and old model low volume replacement parts are typically the first on the chopping block to prioritize new production parts. In the case of Toyota et al they are car manufacturers not car parts manufacturers. If they can’t produce new cars, they can’t survive. Servicing older cars is second priority, unfortunately but understandably.

 

Unfortunately Stellantis was still having these same supply issues well before covid was an excuse. Though I'm sure they are even worse currently.

And the gas strut we are discussing here doesn't appear to be a supply issue either. Kinda sounds like Toyota just doesn't want to bother with making room in their warehouses anymore.

 

Question about the shock and how the tailgate lowers.
I bought my 2011 in Dec 2023.
If I open the tailgate and let it drop, it doesn't fall hard, but it doesn't ease all the way down.
How are they supposed to fall?

 

That’s how mine is now, it doesn’t bang down but I’m replacing it now but my impression
compared to the relatively good one on my ‘07 is that it’s time to replace before I need it.
Less than $40 so for the price of restaurant dinner I’m replacing mine.

 

My 2012 started out pretty buttery. Somehow one of my favorite little features on the truck.

Over the past year, the strut is showing signs of deterioration. Instead of opening smoothly and consistently thru the entire range, the tailgate falls open about 2/3 of the way, bounces up slightly before dropping the remaining 1/3.

I also plan to replace the strut in the near future.

 

Replaced mine today. It literally took me 5 minutes from taking out the taillight to putting it back in. Very simple. Now the tailgate lets itself down easily.

It comes with the boot installed.


It seems to work well for the first few test raises/drops. It starts to fall, and the lift catches it about 1/2 way down, and lowers it gently. It makes raising the tailgate easier. Time will tell as far as longevity.

It took all of 5 minutes to swap out.

 

I bought an Amazon version and it unfortunately didn’t work with my 2010..
