I went back and forth on the F150 and Tundra for some time. I could have lived with either truck. Neither is perfect. Both require some compromises. Ultimately, I got an F150 equipped how I want for a reasonable price whereas Toyota wouldn’t meet me at a point where I felt comfortable.
I knew I was buying an extended warranty on either, so that didn’t factor into my decision.

You can also order an F150 the way you want it versus having to find a Toyota dealer with an allocation. In my case, a local Toyota dealer with 80 Tundras on the lot told me Toyota doesn’t make a 1794 non-hybrid in a 6.5 foot bed configuration.

I’m just not going to deal with that.

Even if the F150 has to go to the dealer for warranty work more frequently, it’s not a big deal to us. My SO and I share 4 vehicles so we each have a backup vehicle. I’d rather deal more frequent dealer visits than spend a similar amount of money and not have a configuration that meets my needs.

Brings back memories! Where are you stationed? I was with INS in El Centro, CA in the mid-90's with the District Counsel's office long before it got gobbled up into DHS. Was doing drug trafficking, alien smuggling and criminal alien deportation cases before Immigration Court in Imperial, CA. Got to ride around with Border Patrol in the El Centro sector a few times. Back then, we all had prices on our heads from the now mostly-defunct Arellano-Felix cartel out of Tijuana. Fun times. Don't know how you guys do it being all alone at night in that desolate environment.

Anyway, back to the topic on hand. Back then, Border Patrol was using full-size Ford Broncos. Some of the BPA's I spoke with preferred the older Chevy Blazers they were using in the late 80's before they were replaced by the Ford Broncos. Against the advice of Border Patrol mechanics, I ended up getting a used fullsize Bronco. They actually recommended I get a Toyota, which back then were the pre-Tacoma pickups, mostly powered by the 22RE. I did end up getting a 92 4Runner, but it had the infamous 3.0 V6, known for blowing head gaskets at around the 100K mile mark. Toyota, in its effort to remain in the public's good will, mostly fixed them for free, including mine. Traded it in for a 99 Tacoma with the 2.7L 4 cylinder, and then later got a 93 Tacoma with the 3.4L V6. Both of those Tacomas were the most reliable, durable, toughest trucks I've ever had, despite some of the abuse I put them through. As for the Ford Bronco, it went through 3 transmissions, 2 transfer cases, numerous starter solenoids, and two starters, not to mention the countless times it left me stranded. It was a love-hate relationship with that Bronco until my brother-in-law totaled it and somehow managed to bend the front frame. Despite the c-section frame, that Bronco's frame was super thick. I know because it went through a couple drill bits to drill through it compared to the Toyota frames I've drilled. Kind of put me off Ford after that, but my father-in-law has had good luck with two old Fords, an 86 F150 with the venerable inline 6 that went 500K miles before a rebuild, and '97 F150 V8 that made it to well over 400K miles until it got totaled. His son, the same brother-in-law that totaled my Bronco, had bad luck with his 2014 F150, though. His engine somehow blew up. He's looking for another one.

Don't know much about the new 3rd gen Tundras other than they look cool. Keep reading about engine failures on them, though, but I think those are the first model year Tundras? Haven't kept up with the new Fords other than reading through some of this thread.

Just wanted to update this post, my truck spent 9 weeks at the dealer to to diagnose and repair the rear parking sensors issue and all is working fine now. They ended up replacing the parking sensors and replacing and programming an ipma module.

Yeah it's ridiculous. I was 2 more weeks away from requesting a buyback. It ended up needing a new computer module. They did give me a loaner vehicle during that time and all appears to be working fine now.

Parking next to a Tundra really makes you appreciate how much better looking the F-150 is. There are some ways the Tundra is better than the F-150 but looks aren't one of them.

Depends, I suppose. I think if the chrome was eliminated it'd go a LONG way towards making the Tundra look better.

Additionally...I like the 'squariness' (it's a word now lol) of the F150 front end, but I like the back end of the Tundra better.

My friend has a Platinum F150 I believe 2017 model. And its now paid off, however, at 60k miles, its leaving puddles on the driveway of oil. He said it maybe due to him getting a 5 star tune, because of increased pressure, and plastic oil pans, and stuff. Either way, that was enough for me not to get it and get the Tundra.

Did it not click that this is what they are referring to when they say "Ford F-150 dominance"? This is a Ford alpha move by having it mark its territory.

My 2017 F150 3.5 Eco?boost leaked oil around the plastic oil pan gasket. It was a TSB for my dad’s 2016 2.7L EcoBoost, and mine was covered under warranty… but it began leaking again… shocking, right???
That was when it wasn’t in the shop 3x in 7 years for an engine rebuild to fix a lovely phaser/timing chain issue with countless TSBs which was mostly covered under warranty/extended warranty.

To me, that highlights some of the less-than-ideal visibility with the Tundra. The door panel belt line and the mirror are both awkwardly high and the windows feel too small, similar to GM trucks. Fords definitely have the best visibility. From what I remember (haven't been in one in a while), Rams are somewhere in between.

It wasn't one of my Tundra deal breakers and I'm sure I could have gotten used to it, but I do remember when driving one that I immediately missed the visibility in the F-150s.

My 2018 2.7 had the plastic pan - I loved that I didn't have to carry tools under the truck to change the oil, but I know leaking was common on those so it may have been an issue with enough time. Both my 2020 and 2023 have metal pans.

Yeah, plastic has no business being on an engine related seal. lol.

If you're going to compare looks, you should at least match trim level. You parked a color matched Platinum with dual exhaust next to what appears to be an SR5 or maybe a Limited. Agreed with @js312 on visibility. The feeling of compressed vertical space and reduced visibility compared to my truck were the first things I noticed when I first sat in a 3rd gen.
Lots of head scratchers out there. What's up with the goofy carpet-looking skid plates under the new Tundras?

I'm under the impression that's for sound deadening. Kind of like why luxury SUVs would put carpeted areas in the wheel wells.

Carpet? I know about carpet in the wheel wells for sound insulation, but not under the truck. They are metal.

Can’t imagine going to the remote spots we go for hunting and camping with carpet in my wheel wells.
Yeah I guess they're not skids...more like fender liners. Still kind of a head scratcher for me.

Unless you've got a PRO the skids are plastic for the TRD off roads or that felt stuff that is similar to the front fender liners for non-trd's. That or the TRD skid was added as a port accessory or added on at the dealership.

The one exception to that would probably be the limited edition 1794, which is basically a pro. The Limited edition is only 1500 units and the press release doesn't mention a skid so guessing it doesn't have it either.

Did you see it on all trims? I'd imagine they'd probably focus them on things like the 1794LE/Capstone lineup. You know, the ones that don't see dirt unless it managed to wash up on the pavement.

Headlights for example ... no thanks to the huge lens/plastic on Ford. One of the reasons I upgraded.. the smaller sleek design over the 2nd and 2.5 gen.

Hey brother, out here in good ol’ Texas. It’s part of the job, that’s what I signed up for, was given a badge/ gun to fight bad guys. Same round these parts, couple cartels fighting for territory. We have plenty of technology and assets to keep em in check. Fun-times for sure, never a dull moment. We got our 100th anniversary coming up this year. Lots of commemorative stuff coming up, Special edition Glock 47 ( Austrian made model) boots, belt buckles, knives to name a few.
We only receive Fords n Chevys. No Dodges… It would be nice I got a few Mustangs like Highway Patrol has gotten. Maybe Ican convince the chief to purchase some. In the meantime we’ll have to be happy with the Ford Explorers, Chargers and a few relic Malibu SS, which are well kept. I remember those Sea-Foam green explorers those were built like tanks, or the first gen. Raptors.

I have an old 2004 Ford Explorer with the 4.6, had to replaced timing chain guides and tensioners @ 200k. Siting at 225k now l, solid as can be. Ever component has been replaced. I had to replace the intake manifold as it developed a leak around the thermostat area, used it as an excuse to upgrade to a Ford Performance manifold… they look identical to me.

That's unfortunate but that's on him. Mine is paid off too but no way I'd tune it. I've got two buddies who have blown up new engines with tunes. One was a SeaDoo GTX (which to be fair is already probably under a lot of stress to make 300 hp even with the stock tune), but the other is what should be a bulletproof Yamaha outboard. Nothing is "free", if you could make more power without sacrificing reliability, engine manufactures would take advantage.

I wonder if the no Dodges thing is because it's no longer American owned? Interesting.

Significant part of the equation is the fed government purchases vehicles manufacturers have a big surplus of to unload. I know Dodge trucks have some federal sales and some state and local police packages. It could just be they choose not to allot the number of vehicles for sale to some specific federal fleets that other manufacturers do, as they have a better or different use for that manufacturing capacity than that particular fleet.

Another possibility is the purchasers get Fords and Chevies for 5 cents less and go for them for that reason.

The federal fleet actual uses foreign makes though. Not on huge scale but they do.
