Had my 21' Powerboost back out of the shop for a few weeks only to find it dead in the water when I came out from work the other day.

Lol Apparently there is a popular tune for the Powerboost which I will never touch and some of the Ford OTA updates are erasing it. A couple of these software updates have caused people issues to where it's like my Iphone. I've disabled my automatic feature and wait a bit to hear if there are issues before I allow them.

I got the OTA update a couple days ago, truck feels even more responsive. I've always been curious about tuning, there is so much potential with the 3.5, but voiding warranty seems like a risk.

I agree with you. Tuning might give you better numbers but at what risk?

Even if the Toyota tune was a thousand dollars, instead of 3k, I wouldn't do it just so I didn't have to buy premium fuel for life. And that extra power isn't going to change anything I can or cant do with the truck as it is now.

As I told it on here, a computer reflash from an electronic tailgate recall corrupted software and put my truck down for 15 days with demonically possessed head lights. This was the dealer following manufacturer's procedures.

I will never mess with aftermarket tunes and am reluctant to even fiddle with forscan as irritating as the stupid double honk is, despite everyone swearing it's dummy proof.

I am good with 430 hp and 570 pounds of tq.

Mmm, I love forscan. Seatbelt chime delete, beep delete, adaptive/glare free headlights(technically illegal in US), Bambi mode, DRL brightness adjustment. Love it.

I heard the 2023 ECUs are encrypted and tuners haven't come up with a solution for them yet.

I wouldn't bother anyway - it does 0-60 in 5.3 seconds and with summer gas I'm reliably getting ~25 MPG on my work commute. It's a pickup truck, what more do people want?

I've done some things in Forscan on every F-150 I've had. Never had any issues. Added the temperatures to my dash displays, disabled the horn honk when walking away with the key, removed the text on the backup camera while in motion, enabled global windows, and probably some other things that I'm not thinking of.

I think there has only been one irreversible change that people found, but it was a weird value and I'm not sure why people felt they needed to mess with it. It was on the 15-20 trucks and is highlighted on the spreadsheet basically saying "don't touch this unless you want to buy a new BCM".

Leaves your high beams on all the time, just cuts out the light around cars around you. It's amazing if you live in a place with a lot of deer. Common in Europe and Canada, but we have a law on the books from the 70s that bans it, even though this tech obv didn't exist then.

They have been encrypted since 2021 and SCT, HPTuner's and Livernois all have the ability to tune them. Instead of flashing through the OBD port, you actually connect directly to the PCM under the hood so that its not protected by the other modules in the truck.

Livernois was the first ones because, as I understand it, they helped Ford Performance develop their tune and so they were essentially handed the keys to the encryption. Looks like they support 2023's.

If the 2023 isnt tunable quite yet by the others, its just a matter of time. It looks like HPTuner supports 2023 5.0's already.

Pickups are great platforms for making power since most are 4x4 and have tons of traction and their powertrains are already very beefy. You don't have to worry about blowing up the rear 9.75" semifloat axle, thats for sure.

    Oh I don’t know…
    • Not to blow its engine at 115k miles
    • Not to have rattling cam phasers that were “fixed” under warranty but now the sound is back and its “normal” according to the Ford dealer
    • Not to expect the loads of recalls that cost Ford $billions more in warranty work than any other manufacturer
    • Not to have buggy electronics that require multiple trips to the dealer
    • Not to have “wtf just happened under the truck” transmission clunks

Every single person I know who owns an F150 built in the last several years deals with at least two of the above. Some get 30k miles down the road. Some 50k or 70k. But the issues inevitably start to appear. Recently, a buddy of mine wanted a Tundra but got mad at Toyota’s financing rates. So he bought a ‘23 3.5EB XLT with the 360 camera and max trailering packages. Feels like it pulls incredibly strong. Seems like a nice truck. He’s apparently enjoying it (his dash said 14.8mpg when I rode in it this weekend). But just like every other F150 I’ve been in made after 2013, it just feels like it’s here for a good time not a long time.

Some of us depend on our vehicles long term. Features matter far less to me than the thing doing what I need it to Every. Single. Time I turn the key.

I am glad the powerboost is working for you, but 5.3sec 0-60 with 25mpg on an unloaded highway cruise in no way entices me to depend on one long term.

The great irony of this post is that if I go HD, I might end up in an F350.:annoyed:

It's funny that you went on this rant when the entire point of his post was why would he need to tune the truck for more power.

It turns out I want a lot more out of a truck than 0-60 and 25mpg highway. :notsure:
One has never touched me. But it might if I go HD…

I want to hear how your ownership has been after 70-100k miles.

    - on the recalled driver's seat sliding rails
    - on the valve body separator plate
    - on the crap radio
    - on the broken rear sliding window
    - on the rear defroster window (3 times)
    - on the driver's side rear door that would not close in sub-zero temps
    - on the tailgate that would not close
    - on the failed emergency brake

You get the idea. These were all on my last F150. It never left me stranded, but in comparison, here's the list of ALL issues between ALL of our Toyotas:

    - one bad solenoid

Given I've actually been stranded by a Ford truck in subzero temps in the middle of nowhere...reliability is a HUGE deal for me.

You just came across triggered, as if he was personally attacking you cause your truck is slow and inefficent.

It actually just turns out he was arguing there was no reason to tune his truck.

Well, it's nice that we have choices. I've only got 2X,000 miles so far in the two years I've owned it but zero problems. I certainly hope it never leaves me stranded but even IF I do end up having some minor problems it'll be worth it for the added features I've used and enjoyed vs Tundra.

Not at all. I read that post as saying out loud what the majority of truck buyers are after: quick to 60 and 20+mpg. If that’s what you’re after, go Ford. They always have the best performance numbers. But every single person I know deals with a lot of crap over time.

From what I'm finding, Livernois sells you a new ECU if you want a tune on a 2023, so there's some sort of difference:

    upload_2024-5-8_13-23-20.png

They aren't flawless, but everything has its issues.

I had a Tacoma and loved it, but even it had its issues. I recall frozen alignment bolts, a broken leaf spring, a bad idler (or tensioner, can't remember) pulley, and a drive shaft noise issue that was replaced under a TSB. All of that was under 100k, after 100k was generally okay ironically.

My point was really just that there's no point in tuning a truck with this kind of power and efficiency.

I only mentioned that because power and economy are benefits of a tune and I don't see a need to improve either.

I actually posted all the pros and cons of the Tundra and F-150 when I was test driving them and power and economy didn't come into play nearly as much as, overall feature availability, outward visibility, comfort, thoughtful utility options, etc.

@Terndrerrr Boy did you hit every nail on the head and the reason I switched from ford to Toyota... I had a special edition XLT 3.5L that I was absolutely in love with. The whole "ECM update to fix cam phasers" but if ECM update doesn't fix then it'll have to be covered under factory warranty (which for me had just expired) just didn't sit right with me. Especially after ford came out and said "oh yeah all the improvements we made to the gen2 3.5L fixed cam phaser rattle" blah blah blah. Was reading an article today stating that they spend more than every other manufacturer on recalls/warranty work. Not sure how factual this information is but it doesn't surprise me whatsoever...
