Good on ya! I needed to stop bad. I was not in a good place. Drinking before work, during work, after work. All just because. Sun up to sun down on the weekends. While driving, while in church, you name it. I got real good and crafty with hiding my sipping cup everywhere I went.

I made a decision to stop on Jan 1 and only slipped up on Jan 17. Been sober since then. I'm down 50 pounds and 3 inches in my waste just from not drinking and the calorie intake of snaking that come with it. I'm also more active and more willing to get shit done. There is a huge difference in my relationship with my wife, kids and coworkers. I'm a much better person now and I'm happier for it.

The hard part was having to recognize that I needed to change. People could tell me all day long, but in the end, it came down to a decision I had to make for myself. Truth is, I only miss the taste of whiskey now, not the buzz.

Now that I look back on it, I realize it was a sad thing that the owner of the local liquor store new me on a first name basis

Welp. Got into the drums today to see if I can figure out wtf this squeal is. I got in, cleaned out, greased all the contact points as best I could w/o tearing everything completely down or getting anything on the shoe. I guess I didn't grease where the wheel cylinder meets the shoe, but got just about everything else. Zero improvement. Still have the squeal (vid below) and it literally is only on my first pullout. I had to make a 5-stop trip when testing, dropping off and picking up stuff, and it didn't happen a single time. Only seems to happen if the truck sits for more than 3-4 hours.

I really hoped having the phone outside the garage to record video/audio would reveal whether it was the fronts or the rears, but no such luck. Even with directional audio, I can't tell whether it's louder from the front or the rear. I'm suspicious it's the rears but IDFK. It's clearly very thin metal vibrating against something.

That sounds like the goddamn squeeler on the pad. Lol that's wayyyyy gnarlier than I was expecting

 

I'd try to bed those pads and shoes in again, making sure you get them nice and warm. That squeal is unreal!

I agree, but it was there with both the old pads AND the new pads. These are brand new.

I used the same process I always use, and again - this squeal was here both before and after doing the pads.

I've seen numerous people complain about this exact same issue on here:

• Squeal while backing out on 1st ride of the day
• Only in reverse
• Only for the first 3-5 seconds or so of backing up
• Will return if the truck sits for more than a few hours
• Happens whether wet or dry.

Our e46 does something like that, pretty much the same conditions too (only first drive of the day and backing up).
I asked the shop we go to sometimes and they suggested it may be the aftermarket pads aren’t a perfect fit and have a bit more movement than they should so it allows a little drag and movement that they shouldn’t have or something like that, it made some sense.

Here’s a thought; when you park at the end of the day can you pull a bit farther forward then you usually would then back up a bit and leave it like that and see if it does it the next day? This might shift things differently before sitting.

 

I'll surely try that and try what @FrenchToasty suggested resolces his issue, which is a hard pedal mash.

 

So I was thinking about this and I was wondering if the pad composition is causing it? What kind of material are your pads made of???

the only thing that makes sense to me is on the first brake gets the pads warmed up enough and the material becomes less "grabby" but that first brake causes the squeak.

I ONLY think this because on my Miata and 240 I had hawks. And those bitches would squeal like crazy until the brakes got hot enough.

I could also be entirely wrong. Like you have ceramics or something

 

this clip you are referring to is on the front or back brakes? Both show a “clip” on the left.
The clip in the front is what holds the pins in place. Would be very important.

 

Advics ceramics. What I pulled out appeared ceramic also.

 

That clip goes through the holes on the pins to keep them in place. I hope you have this installed.

I'd just reiterate too, for @FishNinja, this shit was happening with the old pads also. I can't figure out when it started, but I did not have this for the first 3ish years I had the truck. It either started around the time I had to replace a couple of rear driver wheel studs, or I can't figure it out. Pretty sure it was happening before I lifted the truck. I can't explain it.

 

Ceramics are known to be noisy

Definitely, I usually avoid. But this is just obnoxious.

 

I just looked up what pads I installed on my truck. Raybestos ceramics. They are silent (even when backing out of my garage).

still think you need to figure out what wheel the noise is coming from and then investigate. Have someone next to you when backing out so they can listen.

 

It's so shrill, I'm not sure if they'll be able to tell.

I did get a GoPro-style camera and a magnetic mount today. I'm going to try tossing it in the center of the truck while backing out to see if I can figure out where it's originating. If I can't put it smack in the center of all four wheels and tell, I guess I'll just need to mount it right on top of each wheel over the course of 4 days and see which is louder? Such a pitfa. What if it's two wheels?! Aaargh!

But yeah, this literally sucks. Now I see why the other 1GT guys with the same problem never resolved it. Trying to figure out the source is a bitch. And it only happens if I'm ever so slightly holding the brakes in, about 20% or so. If I keep the brakes at 75% compression while backing out, nothing. If I back out with no brake pedal, nothing. It's like it hits right at 20-30% pedal activation.

 

I usually opt for organics. Not horrible on dust, and I like the way they feel. Not as noisy or dirty as met/semi-met.

 

Just noticed this shifty, prob not anything related but worth throwing in here I guess? That's real tinny @ 1.5 seconds, like thin metal hitting a perfect resonance. Annoying AF!

 

I'm going to pull the lower tomorrow for sure.

The ones Advics providers (which are the lower in that pic) are smaller than OEM. Which is weird to me, b/c Advics is the OEM.

 

That rant was real epic. As was the lack of mandatory line thru the username time off.

@shifty` that's a lot louder than mine. I seem to remember PHM talking about shim pow, or the shims in that diagram solving his issue. I don't remember for certain though. I have the shims somewhere here, but never put them in.

 

For those who have done the Denso 12 hole upgrade on the 99 to 03 2UZ, which company did you get them from and did you have to install or repin the harness for the connectors?

 

I have not done this upgrade yet, it is on my to do list when I switch to the VVTi intake plenum. Ill most likely buy them from dirty deeds. On other forum and Facebook groups people had problems buying them from eBay. Dirty deeds is a trusted retailer. The injectors themselves are plug and play. No rewiring is necessary.
