2nd Gen, 16 yr old vehicle, still putting out 20 MPG?!!!

4 adults with 3 luggage and an ice cooler on our way to Las Vegas and I managed to set my personal best MPG @ 20 MPG traveling 70mph!!! No hypermiling whatsoever.

I know it's silly of me to go bat crazy over 20 MPG but to think this truck could still outperform my personal best of 19 MPG almost 16 years later is insane to me. And that former PB was set on the first day I drove the truck home from the dealership some 16 years ago.

2008 CrewMax 5.7L V8 w/tow package

 

It's unusual, but that said, driving from near Fredericksburg, VA to Norfolk last week, I managed to do 18MPG going around 65-70MPH. If we don't drive them like we stole 'em (which is hard LOL) decent mileage is definitely attainable.

 

Be sure to give it the juice too sometimes, it really does help keep it healthy.

 

I averaged 17.5 from Suffolk, VA to Radford and 16.5 on the way back.

 

When I ran 6 ply tires on my 4.7L DC I would get around 19-20 mpg mostly highway miles, I went to 10 ply tires to help smooth out the jerky throttle and gets 16mpg

 

I run Nitto Ridge Grapplers (34 PSI cold front/33 PSI Rear). When I got to Vegas and checked tire pressure all four tires were reading 40 PSI.

I don't know what ply the Nitto Ridge Grapplers are. Anyone know?

By the size it will say a rating. Like load range E. Or maybe 3 digit and a letter, like 116h

 

Yup...shows load range E which I believe is 10 ply.

BTW, did I mention how much I love the Nitto Ridge Grapplers? LOL

 

I run my 10ply ridge grapplers at 45psi.

However, when I had Hankook or even BF (same size) tires some years ago I was averaging 15-17 MPG. Maybe the Nittos with 1/4 inches of tread life on the tire is the key! LOL

Either way I'm still stoked.

 

76 mile trip on brand new BGF K02:

IDK about these tires. Cuz my Nitto Ridge Grapplers put out 20.1 mpg with 40K miles on them just recently (see initial post). But I will say this about the K02s...they're so smooth & quieter than the Nitto RGs.

 

Beat up 07 DC 4x4 5.7 300k Chinese 33" mud terrains.
Most of the time, I average 19+ MPG on my 60-mile work commute 80% highway . In heavy traffic with the A/C on, it drops to 14-15 MPG. I bet I could easily push it to 21 MPG with stock tires. The clutch fan delete helped a lot with MPG, but I also drive slowly and don’t race from stoplights.

 

Pretty darn good!

 

I just averaged 18.5 on a 300+ mile mixed driving trip through the mountains! Pretty stoked to get that in a 15 year old truck.
