Has anyone performed a chip upgrade on their 2019 Tundra SR5 4wd? I just returned from camping and my truck registered a whopping 7.5 mpg while towing a 5400 lb travel trailer! Granted, it was really windy, but I'm interested to know if anyone has made an upgrade to increase MPG. I see a few companies selling chip upgrades, and others who recommend installing a high performance air filter. Has anyone on the forum had any luck with either upgrade?

Not worth it. The chips won't help and your truck already has a cold air intake, could try a less restrictive air filter but I would stay away from oiled ones due to chances of over oiling and messing up the MAF.

These trucks are thirsty, it's just part of the game with the 5.7, thirsty but reliable

Repeat after me....7@70. This is your reality. Embrace it. I've towed a similar trailer for about 15k miles back and forth across our great nation. Ain't no chip gonna get you better mileage. I'd look at 5.29 gears or a S/C for any significant difference in towing performance. On the plus side, it won't hurt your mileage any further to throw in a few of your favorite cold beers and one of those comfy folding rocking chairs for your destination. Enjoy the trips!

I don’t know what tire size you have. Maybe changing to a smaller tire size might help. But what was said above, not a lot you can do .

Only way to increase MPG is to slow down. No chip will overcome physics. It takes energy to move that big trailer. Energy comes from burning fuel. Period. Decrease the amount of energy required (re-gear, smaller, lighter tires, lower the truck, or drive under 60mpg) and MPG will improve.

Thanks to all of you who replied! I appreciate all of the advice and recommendations. I'll give them a shot and hope for better mileage. If not, I'll just get used to lower mileage while towing! Thanks to all again!

Nope, to get the best MPG, keep the truck stock height and run stock size tires, highway tread. MPG ratings are 13/17 and it you drive carefully you can get a bit better, 1-1.5 mpg more perhaps.

Towing -expect low double digits, even single digit at times depending on load and conditions. You are driving a 400HP, heavy, brick shaped vehicle so all this is typical.

Thanks for you response! My truck is leveled and I just put new Michelin ATX tires on it. I went with a slightly larger tire (275/70/18 vs stock 275/65/18), so combined with the leveling kit, that may explain some of the poor MPG. Thanks again.

The taller tires are killing at least 2-3 highway mpg alone

    Let’s all say it together…

No chip on the market is going to give you any appreciable amount of power or efficiency gains.

Whatever this forum told me to do
    hold on a minute...

y'all said to never use the words power & efficiency in the same sentence*.

    what'd I miss?

*like>> never use Supercharger & warranty in the same sentence.

Yeah, but I specifically said power OR efficiency. They don’t need to go hand in hand.

As long as they get the point that there aren’t any chips available that are worth a shit, I’ve made a difference.

By using the chip or ECU that belongs in a Prius you can get really great MPGs.

The only drawback is you have to use it in the Prius.

Welcome to Tundras. Get a 38gal tank (or 46gal Transferflow) so you can forget how much the last fill-up crammed it in your cram-hole.

    For my own edification -

What would this "chip" be doing?

    specifically?

Would it lean out the fueling?

and why would one want to change the fundamental programming of a complicated engine?
