We will be putting a new four wheel hawk camper onto my 2014 crewmax in a few days. It'll live on the truck for most of the time as I have a 1st gen Cummins to do the grunt work. The camper will stick out several inches past the bed and four wheel campers recommends that the tailgate stays on for support. My thought is to find a second tailgate and chop it to the length of the camper to avoid extra metal sticking out behind the camper. I'd be keeping my backup camera and putting it on the back of the camper or the modded tailgate. I had a couple thoughts and figured I'd run them by y'all to get thoughts and opinions.
    1) Buy a metal "5th wheel"style tailgate and cut that to fit?
    2) Buy a second 2007-2013 tailgate and chop it to fit. Not sure if they fit but cheaper than 2014-2017 tailgates?
3)Buy a 2014-2017 tailgate for $10000000 dollars and cut it?
    4) Nothing...run it like it sits and don't worry about it?
    5) Tailgate off?
Thanks in advance...let me know if there's options I haven't thought of.

Camper will extend how many inches past the bed?
Stock tailgate support grabs at 12".

Camper is 6.5' so about 16" would be my guess. It should go past the support anchors.

Yep, that's what I was thinking, and depending on how much you want to spend, how bothered you are by appearance and how long you are going to keep your truck, you could get it cut off and a new cap welded and painted at a local body shop.

How did your Hawk on your Crewmax end up working out? I'm possibly doing the same thing this October when I take delivery of my FWC Hawk. I am a bit worried about getting to the spare tire and the ride on the freeway with the overhang situation. If you can share how things have worked out for you it would be appreciated.

I'm a Toyota guy through and through, but because of the lack of fuel efficiency I am considering moving to a Ram 2500 with a 6/5 foot box and Cummins, but if I can ride this pony for a few years that's more money in the bank. Thanks!
