My Brother and I are trying to plan a week long Fishing Trip down to the Coast in Texas. My brother is a Marine and will be Deploying to Dubai in November. We are trying to get some plans together before he leaves. We are both pretty novice fishers.

The plan right now is to go to Port Aransas/ Corpus area. We plan on going to Padre Island National Seashore and Tent camping there for the week. Neither of us have salt water fished before. We plan on fishing from the piers and coastline unless we can figure out a way to get a Boat. It will probably be late May to Early June when this all takes place depending on when he comes back. I plan on building a rod holder for the bed of my Tundra.

What kind of Rods and reels should we look into getting?
Also what kind of Tackle and bait should we get?
I am not familiar with the types of fish that are commonly cause off the coast other than Speckled trout and drum.

Any suggestions and or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

We will defiantly get tags. I already have mine cause randomly like to go out and drown some worm, And I also hunt deer and wild hog.

If we get a boat we will probably rent one.

Rod holders i made from 1x6 deck boards 2 of em placed side by side on back i got 1" wide galvanized flat strap 2 pieces n drilled 4 holes to hold boards together then i bought 2" pvc pipe and cut them at 12" with a 3/4" wide notch about 2" deep so that reel sits in that notch then on each pipe i cut out 2 1" wide holes so u can screw the pipe to board I made 6 holders n spaced em evenly also got 1" wide strap galvanized metal 2 1/2 ft long and bent to shape as a "J" drilled holes 2 each strap and placed the "J" upside down next to other metal strap holding boards and you can place rod holder board over back of bed of truck

First off, shout out to your brother, my hat is off to him.

Second, depending on where you're going, my cousin is a badass fishing guide in Matagorda county. I not sure his rates or anything like that, but if you're looking for something guided, he'd be a resource. Also, his brother is a game warden, so if you get in any trouble, hit me up! ;)

He went through boot camp in San Diego. And he is currently stationed at Camp Pendleton. I think he went through June through October.
He had a friend that went through at Parris Island at the same time.

That's awesome. I wish him well. My nephew is at Pendleton now too. He also trains up at 29 Palms when they bring the big guns out.
