2WD Rear Diff Gear Oil Change

Hello all,

Looking for some tips and info on a Rear Differential fluid change. I have done a search on this through out the forum and most deal with the front (4WD) and there is talk on the rear, but nothing really specific.

Looking for what other have used as the gear oil as I am planning on Mobile 1 75-90w or if there is another type that should be used. And the amount normally needed.

In my Armada I normally fill until it is starting to come out of the filler hole. I figure about the same process for this one.

Also looking out for some wisdom on the change itself, as in what to expect on doing this as it is most likely the first time its been done. Currently have 81K on the odo on my 2011.

I am pretty competent on doing most of my own work, but first time with a Tundra.

Sounds like you have it figured out. Same process for any rear diff. I’d Google oil grade
but these have the factory LS in them. So getting oil with possible necessary additives to keep the LS alive would be worth a search. Try the search feature here on the forum “2011 LS gear oil requirements” or some such. Then I won’t have to! LOL. Thanks in advance

 

Thanks for the info. I have done this type of maintenance dozens of times, but each vehicle is different in its own right. I got this truck and its my 1st Toyota. Still learning the nuances of this verses other vehicles.

I have 2 Tundra's, 3 Land Cruisers, and acknowledge my sickness with pride. Oh, and '98 RAV4 cause the best of the tiny wheelers.

 

Your Tundra doesn't use an LS additive. Not unless someone has swapped in a true LS diff. Our "LS" system uses braking on the wheel without traction as a type of limited slip. The Mobil 1 75/90 will do just fine. I use Amsoil 75/90.

 

Yes my first Toyota, and I am quite impressed, to the point that I am now looking at getting a 24 4Runner. Seems like Toyota has it figured out. Prior I have been a fairly loyal Nissan guy, with each of 4 I have had over the years have all made it to 300,000 plus. The Armada I have now since new in 2007 MY 2008 have 250k with no issues (knock on wood). But Nissan's have gone way down in quality. Wont be going back to those lots anytime soon.

 

We had a '86 Nissan 720 pick up for 8 yrs with that 24Z motor. Amazing truck, but it finally died of old age. Never would
have sold it on purpose, so I get Nissan Loyalty.

 

I appreciate the info on this. I can get the Mobil 1 easier that the Amsoil, so I will stick with that.

 

Open fill plug first, if you can’t open fill plug there’s no point draining the diff.

 

Is there any reason to get a magnetic drain plug ? My ‘11 has 108k. I plan to do the diff’s 1st drain and fill. (I was asleep on the rec interval I guess) Should I get a new plug and gasket ; if so, anything special? I am a house remodel guy. I am stretching my capabilities by taking this on. Thanks!

 

I think you'll find that the drain plug that's on there has a magnet. No reason to replace it. Just use a new gasket. Be sure to loosen the fill plug first, to ensure that you CAN refill it.

I just changed my rear diff a couple weeks ago. First time in the Tundra. Very straight forward and simple. I drove it around the block to get it a little warmed up(probably not necessary). Crack open the fill plug first(as others said), drain, new crush washer, torque to spec, fill till it oozes out(took just under 4qts). I used Mobil1

$39 75w-90 GL-5 Limited Slip, Ultra Long Drain 500k Miles, Manual Transmission, Gear/Differential Lubricant (1 Gallon)

75w-90. Torque fill plug to spec n clean up the mess.

 

Catch some of that old gear oil smell in a jar! Precious memories...

 

Its my go to Yankee Candle fragrance in my garage.
