Hope someone can help. I re-installed the driver side cams according to the ALLDATA instruction on the 2uz-fe. Followed it to the letter. I aligned the cam gears on the double dots, pain stakingley put it all back together to torque specs, and when I put the timing belt sprocket on(which will only fit one way), the timing mark is 180 degrees off. I really need someone who knows what is going on here .........

Should probably post this in the 1st gen specific section. As this section is for builds and has less traffic.

Any mod.s can help homie out and move his thread?

Scuba, did you get an answer to this or get it resolved on your own? I need to replace cam seals, appreciate any tips you can provide on resetting cams and getting timing marks lined up

Didn’t see his original post as it’s in an obscure section, but the cam timing will either be lined up with the crank timing at 0°, or 180°. The cam rotates 2:1 with the crank. His timing was probably right on. Not sure if he pulled the crank pulley at 180° and didn’t realize it as he was focusing on the cam alignment. The FSM is available in the first Gen section mega thread. Great reference for working on your truck straight from Toyota.

Thanks a bunch for the reply. I’ve pulled the fsm from this forum and have been reading and watching everything I can find before diving in. From what I’ve seen, the passenger/right hand cams align exactly as expected in the fsm, with single dot cam marks lined up correctly and the exhaust cam service bolt right up on top. But on the driver cam/left hand side, seems the exhaust can service bolt isn’t accessible without rotating the cams to bring it up. So when reinstalling, the fsm says to align the 2dot marks on the driver side cams, which leaves the service bolt accessible. But then the cams are out from crank timing on that side. Nothing in fsm says to rotate those driver cams back down. Good threads found though, sounds like those cams can be freely rotated with crank at proper 50 deg ATDC. Fwiw, my plan is to paint mark the cam gears before pulling them, then when reinstalling, align the two dots on that driver side to set cam timing and then spin cams back to match my reference marks before installing timing belt. Hopefully that puts everything back to the position it was in for crank timing while making sure cam timing is correct also. I’ll report back once I get a chance to get into it.

that’s not the thread I thought it was. But there was on on ih8 that went in depth on it as another member there was having almost the same problem as OP here, and was having a hard time getting one of his cams to seat as well
