I'm not sure any of these "kids" know about Magoo

I'm probably gonna need to travel down this path in the near future, but I go out of my way to do regular maintenance on what we have. I'm still on the fence about whether to go big-tank again, or other. I'd love to free up the real estate in the HVAC/water closet going tankless. But not sure how awesome that'll be w/gas. Things to ponder. Still probably have another 5-10 years on the existing tank, it's only 20yr old.

That's weird y'all say that. Yesterday one of my stupid ass 3rd years backed our job site truck into a 1 ton flat bed. Busted the tailight. Flatbed didn't give a shit. We started calling him magoo.

 

I remember it so well, but not well enough to name which cartoon it was. I wanna say vintage disney. It wasn't roger rabbit was it?

It's hard to believe that's the first time you ever opened your panel. Unbelievable even..... sparky.

I recently did a remodel for this polish couple. The owners were on the job one day and heard someone call our electrician 'sparky'. 20 minutes or so later, we were discussing lighting and needed him in our convo, so the lady called out for him "SPARKLES!!" When the laughter had calmed enough to catch my breath, I told her "you have no idea what you've just done, that will be his new name til he retires!" and.........it stuck.

 

From what I've heard, gas and electric tankless have come a long ways from when they started 20 years ago. Used to be we'd have to run a 100A line to them. Gas had to be like a 1" or 1 1/4" to them. I dunno plumbing that well.

 

Gas is awesome for cooking. It can be awesome for grilling and sometimes fireplaces. Electric will always be more efficient for water specifically.

I don't necessarily have an easy choice, I'm pre-plumbed for gas throughout the house (which is also my preference FWIW) and need to do extra work to switch over to electic.

 

Yep, you can get some units to run off half inch now, but 3/4 is preferred or bigger

 

Hell no, I haven't done shit. Well, I did change a few plugs because they reminded me of my ex wife. I also changed a switched plug to constant hot in the living room so nobody would turn my entertainment center/router off. But I have an outside plug falling out of the wall, bathroom gfi doesn't work, and a fixture in my laundry is hanging by the cords. Fucking pay me and I'll fix it. I'm gonna ask her about it now that I know they will.

Electric is more efficient by far with water heating specifically. And mind you, it pains me to say that as a gas lover.

 

I don’t doubt you, but it’s hard to fathom coming from a air guy where electric heat seems to be so much less efficient that forced air gas. I hate heat pumps

 

Heat pumps are garbage. But yeah, think of it like this: Electric, all heat is focused directly and constantly on the water. Gas, you're losing heat to the atmosphere out the vent pipe before it can be fully realized. Or at least that's my understanding and I'm open to being wrong.

We’ve had tankless gas water heaters for over 25 years and they’ve been great.

Our first one (Bosch, put in in the late 90s at our last house) never had a problem in the approximately 10 years we used it before moving, but it did have a pilot light which reduces efficiency quite a bit and probably wasn’t the most efficient- it did work without power though and since our water was gravity fed we always had hot water.
Our current unit is a Rinnai condensing heater I put in around 13 years ago, haven’t had any problems with it either and I believe it was rated at 94% efficiency.
We’re building a new house on the same property (have been for about 4.5 years now) and I put Rinnai combi boilers (two, two buildings) in there, they do the hydronic heating and domestic water heating, they’re rated at almost 96% efficiency.

So they can be pretty efficient, if you’re switching from a tank type your overall energy consumption will be lower. They may have a little more lag getting hot water to you than a tank, but it’s worth it, and you never run out of hot water no matter how many showers in a row are taken.

 

Okay @Mr.bee it will run my garage fridge, my shop vac and several corded hand tools, so I had no doubt. But, for science, it will also run a coffee marker.

Tankless fucks! Im going on 8ish years with an ecotemp low end gas unit. Zero maintenance, just like my Tundra.

 

I didn't know they foreclose after a month. I thought it was like 2 or 3. But I'm not a home owner.

I do flush ours with vinegar once a year.

 

Is there a cocktail shaker inside? Just curious what Lexus owners consider an emergency.

 

Its definitely recommended, but so is replacing your lower ball joints
