This is a wood wasp. Freaked me the fuk out when I saw it. It was easily 2" long, if not longer, not counting the long stinger looking thing. Then looked it up and felt better to learn that they are pretty harmless. The stinger is actually a tube for injecting eggs into wood.

I have been buying those but Fry’s near my place (owned by Kroger) has them also and that is the best fast meal I can find. Agreeably the Costco ones are better chickens (larger) but all in all they are great

Forgot this guy is in the truck today.
Found him on his back at work. It was cold and rainy, so I brought him into the shop to warm up. He started moving around so I put him in a basket and figured I'd let him go when he sobered up and got his shit together. He's still in the truck and hasn't moved from that spot. No signs of damage from a crash or bird attack. It's still cold and windy so I'll let him go later on.
Those squares in the basket are roughly 3/8".

 

That's a good size dragonfly. Freakin' amazing animals. Pretty sure they are the most successful predators by a wide margin. We're lucky they don't get as big as they used to, or they would eat us.

 

Eyeballin it, I'd say 4.5" long with a 5" wingspan.
