Some of you might remember- my GFs parents asked me to find them a good used car. Long story short- they weren’t pumped about most of the options. Wanted something nicer. Against my better judgement, we ended up with this:
    IMG_1346.jpg
A Land Rover for fucks sake.

I actually do like it- a lot. If you didn’t know, the LR3 is the pretty much the most reliable and long lasting Land Rover ever made. It’s the only Rover product I’d consider owning. We got it for a real good price- $4500. The seller was told by the Land Rover dealer that it was “exceptionally rusty”, so he just wanted to get rid of it, as it had just cost him $3000 for a whole new air suspension, and he was worried about other things breaking. He knew he was selling it at a loss.

I took a look- and the rust is really not bad at all. The body is in awesome shape, and the rust that it has is really not too bad. The stuff like brake lines or small bracket parts were all in decent shape. With a brand new air suspension system, and a long history of dealer maintenance, I think it was a good buy.

I did a full service- all fluids (minus brake fluid- it looked brand new), serpentine belts, plugs, and filters. A bit more complex than our trucks, but still easy. Ample room to work around the Jaguar (Ford) sourced 4.4 V8.
    IMG_1332.jpg

Even though it’s not the top trim, it’s got a ton of options, including the really rare locking rear diff, and heated windshield. I tried out some of it’s offroad features, and this thing flexes better than a jeep. It’s got locking center and rear diffs, real low range, hill decent control, tons of stuff. Check out the suspension droop-
    IMG_1335.jpg

I’m hoping it’ll be good to them. These are known to last- with maintenance.

The computer is. But I'm talking about the separate hardware and firmware that runs the alignment heads.

I think it's a specific wavelength for the reflectors/cameras to calculate angles. Inside the red strobe/led is a camera.

I’ve got a tire theory question. I’m looking at 265 vs 275 vs 285 - all 70/17. I was surprised to find there are lighter weight 285s than 275s - I guess there are just more options in that size. So the questions is based on y’all’s butt dyno readings and experience - does the weight or diameter have a larger effect on acceleration and braking?

Hands down, weight. Rotational mass will always have more negative impact. Same way it’s harder for you to carry 150lbs versus 40lbs. Not only is it more difficult to pick it and spin it, but it’s also harder to stop it once it’s at speed. All things you need to think about, especially if you already hate your brakes.

I almost doubled my* tire weight going from a basic street 265/65r17 (30.6”) tire at around 30lb to an aggressive AT 275/70r17 (32.2”) at around 59lb IIRC. My cruise likes to hunt at highway speeds now. I definitely lost at least 1mpg, maybe 2, but I’d need to bust out the calculator on that since my speedo and odometer don’t read correctly after adding almost 2” tire diameter.

Be thoughtful with what you choose.

Oh, and weight can vary from tire to tire. There’s a ton of variation in AT tires. I found some in the same size as mine that were 25-35% lighter but similar tread beef. But I was looking for something specific. Road noise is real. Look at the tire rating too: E-rating is pretty stiff and harsh on city roads.

That's exactly why I decided I wanted the Konigs, because they're like 7lbs lighter than the Level 8s and a good reason for the desire for skinny 35's (besides fitment reasons)

Yeah so I’m currently on 265/65/17 Michelin LTX AT2s that weigh 39

If I go to 265/70/17, there’s an open country AT3 SL that only weighs 42 - probably little effect on performance and mpg.

the lightest 275/70/17 I can find is the open country AT3 E but it’s 50 lbs

then there’s a 285/70/17 open country AT3 SL that goes back down to 47 lbs

Just thinking through stuff since the tread is giving out on my current set. Sorry to open up the tire can of worms I know y’all get tired of talking through it, but I appreciate the input. I promise I’ll never ask a tire rub question…

This sounds like an awesome choice: You're gaining a whole inch of diameter over what you've got, getting a more aggressive tread, and only a 10% increase in weight. Same width, just more diameter and sidewall height. It's actually a pretty big hop in height. Your speedo will read off, so your mpg will appear to suffer, but it'll probably math out to be the same when you factor in for the ~3% circumference difference ([logged ODO mileage] x 96.7) between tanks to figure it out, if you track.

Unless you're lifted with aftermarket uppers and a struts/coilovers, I wouldn't start venturing into 33" territory, but that's just me. Remind what your current suspension situation is so it's not necessary to dig up?

Gains are weird with more-standard sizes in 17s with stock size at 265/65r17:
    265/70r17 = +1" gain
    275/70r17 = +0.6" gain (1.6" over stock)
    285/70r17 = +0.6" gain (2.2" over stock)

You see your biggest leap at that first hop in ratio (65->70), getting way taller but not any wider. With the bottom two, you start seeing things get fatter, but not much taller.

I don't get tired of walking through it, but I suspect folks get tired of hearing my opinions on it

Alive and well!, just been really busy in all places I usually (used to) be able to play with my phone, so I'm waaay behind on here.

Let's see: I changed assignment at work, and then lost a bunch manpower so now I'm supposed to work more often; my son earned his Eagle rank in Scouts (I'm only a little bit joking when I describe an Eagle Court of Honor as the 'Scout parents' version of an Eagle project'); we just returned from a vacation in Tanzania for cultural learning, with a few days of safari mixed in-- that was spectacular! As soon as we got home (not kidding-- we opened a door we keep closed when we travel), we discovered our house infested with swarming termites... so in addition to getting that dealt with, I pulled up carpets and laminate flooring-- then had to reinstall the laminate. And three in my immediate family have birthdays this month. Busy.

Busy or not, I've been looking forward all winter to installing diff's with B-- since I had my gear/locker install "done by professionals" and therefore missed learning how. B agreed to show, teach, mentor me. I also got to meet his parents, who fed me lunch and toured me through their orchard and garden-- then his mom sent me home with homegrown broccoli! It was a lovely (stress diminishing) day for me. Thanks, Buddy!

I wasn't as helpful as I hoped to be. In addition to Tool Hander duties, I applied my body weight to stop items moving while B broke fasteners loose or torques to spec. (Photo removed in anticipation of the bots' visits tonight).

Get ready for some clashing opinions.
My vote is for the 47lb 285/70r17's.
I like the tire size and think it's big enough without having to do too much to make it fit, if you have a 2-3 inch lift.

Ok I have a 1.5" socket and a 32mm socket. First too big, second too small.

Is the nut holding the axle to the hub a 35mm?

The suspension plan is 6112s in the front, either 7 and 5 or 8 and 6 setting. From there, I’m gonna deal with the back as necessary - I need new leaves anyway, but may try to do a baby bastard pack by chopping up my current leaves and adding them to the ATS stock 4wd pack. I don’t tow a lot, just do regular truck stuff like family camping trips, firewood, occasional load of 2x4s, stuff like that. This is my 100% daily so it’s gotta stay road worthy and comfortable. But I’d like to de-grandpa it and make it capable on for some mild off roading on trails. I know this seems like a lot for a 99% on road vehicle, but I’m a rip the band aid off, buy once cry once guy. I’d prefer to not have to worry about rubbing and leaky cv boots (I think that’s the typical issue, if I’m not mistaken), so I’m willing to not go real big on lift if it means keeping a little less maintenance and more dependability because I stay closer to stock. I plan on keeping the oem 17s so wheel weight isn’t really a factor as of now. Really love @912 (285) and @abcinv (275) setups, just working through the tire size and trying to be reasonable about it.

You know, when I’m doing my regular 6+ hour trips in my Tundra, I stick to 70. It’s the nicest thing ever. Never ever fighting to pass, better gas mileage, a lot less stressful. I tell people that and they think I’m crazy- but it’s wonderful.

It’s pretty awesome if your loaded down with armor and a papa cap full of stuff. Kinda feels like your driving with OD off but better. The only thing that takes some getting used to is the different RPM range the truck now cruises in, it’s a decent amount higher(like 800rpm) but your barely pushing on the gas pedal. I’ve noticed a 2-3mpg bump as well

Anyone have solutions for door sill trim plates? My plastic expanding wedges have worn down pretty bad and the screws no longer do much. Thinking maybe cut off the nubs and glue down plywood or marine board?

Plus when going to 4.10's, I also added an LSD too.

I'm actually on my 3rd diff. Another member has my 1st/original OEM diff now, to replace his bad one.

The 2nd one had 4.10's and OEM LSD, it's the one I've torn apart to rebuild and is slated to go to a different member. I'm looking into a possibility of increasing LSD lockup too.

This 3rd & current diff has 4.10's and a powertrax grip pro (torsen/gear driven) LSD.

I just want people to realize that the left lane is for crime. I don't care how fast you are going in the left lane, if I come up behind you, GTFO of the way!
