I was picking up some bearings at west coast differentials (www.differentials.com) and they had several different carriers on display that show the insides of them.

    Here's some pics I snapped.

This is an OEM type drop out 3rd member that is a 2-pinion open type (2 spider gears).

The rest are identified by a plaque in the pic.

That is interesting. I'd really like to see, in detail, the factory lsd. I don't think I've really seen it.

If I hadn't already installed it, I'd pop it open and lay out the parts.

    OEM LSD

    PXL_20240409_213826718.jpg

I'll try and remember to snag some more pics when I get around to finishing the rebuild on this OEM lsd.

I did snag a couple side by side pics of the tundra 8.4" clutch LSD next to a IS300/FRS/BRZ/86 8" torsen LSD.

8.4" on left, 8" on right.

    PXL_20240411_003224068.jpg

The housings have a couple mm different offset and the ring gear bolts are a different size & quantity. The gears are the same thickness.

Very cool to see that. I had a Detroit Truetrac On my Tacoma and I absolutely loved it. my tundra has the factory mechanical limited slip but at 190,000 mi I'm not sure how good it works. I may end up installing a true trac eventually. For easy to moderate trails.

The OEM LSD lockup is purely based on a center spring applying pressure to the clutch plates. It's (IMO) a very low spec of 20-32ft-lbs breakaway torque.

    Screenshot_20240413-160548.png

Many other designs have both springs or conical washer (spring type washer) AND mechanical ramps that apply more torque to the clutch plates as engine torque is applied. This is both for OEM LSD (mk2 supra for example) and aftermarket ones.

I wonder if anyone makes an aftermarket spring so that the breakaway torque can be higher?

Funnily enough I'm currently looking into that to rebuild the LSD pictured above. I've already ordered a new OEM spring.

The increased lockup will also potentially cause LSD noise to increase, even when using proper fluid with friction modifier.
