Excessive bed movement

Had my 2024 for about a week and have noticed how the bed moves in a way that I think is a little excessive when going over bumps. Initially I thought it was the gate but it seems isolated to the drivers side however it might just be more obvious since it's closer to the mirror. Ran over the same bumps in my 2009 Tacoma and nothing. Is this indicative of a longer bed truck? I've seen the video of the wobbling Tundra bed over washboard bumps...it's not severe like that. Just enough to make me question if it's normal or not.

 

Have the dealer take a look since it's brand new.

Or test drive another 2024 and drive over the same bumps to compare/contrast.

 

Yeah I'm going to do that. In thr meantime I'm going to air down the tires since they have freaking almost 50 psi in each.

 

are those the stock P rated tires you have? if so, ya dude, way too much air

 

Yeah I believe they're P rated. Didn't notice until I looked at the app.

 

ya, check your door, but mine is 35 psi. 50 is way too much

 

Update. Took it to a dealer to have my first oil change. Mentioned the bed movement and they said they couldn't recreate the problem. I took a video of the shaking today just for sh$ts and giggles. This look normal? I'm going over a series of bumps. Both sides recorded.

That does not look normal. Is everthing torqured down tight?

I’m not sure if mine is wobbling but I am taking my truck back to the dealer for the 2nd time this week to fix an incredibly loud rattling from my bed going over bumps. Also rattles when I close my doors. They told me they fixed it the first time it was there on Monday only to find out on my way home that it was even louder and worse!!! So it goes back in tomorrow. We will see what happpens.

 

Dealers are really good at not being able to recreate problems they would have to fix under warranty.

 

Yeah I dropped the PSI to 35 and there is no difference. The tires are stock Michelin 265s.

 

your video is from 2017. If that is a current video with wrong date and not an optical illusion, then the whole bed is moving which points to an issue under it, where it attaches, and possibly related to the suspension since it appears to go back and forth. I would not expect to see that kind of movement with a boxed frame. It has to go on the hoist. JMO

Also when you refer to the wobbling Tundra bed, I assume you refer to the previous gen. Its design was from another era. Its bed with Open C frame was a unique design amongst full size pickups. It was designed to compress and go rigid with alot of weight in the bed when hauling, and to articulate really well off road. Horses for Courses.

 

After seeing this thread, I made a point of watching my bed as I drove over some severely washboarded dirt roads, yesterday. My Gen 3 short-bed barely moved.

OP, there is definitely something wrong with your truck. As stated earlier, you need to get that thing on a lift and figure out what's not bolted down correctly.

The bed bounce on the Gen 3 is much less than than earlier Gens, without a doubt.

 

My 6.5' bed doesn't do that! I really can't see much movement at all. I have 10 ply tires at ~45 psi and I have about 400 lbs. evenly distributed over the bed rails with my cover and tent assembly.

I wonder if this has anything to do with the hydraulic mounts? And are they supporting the box too? Is the bed moving or is the cab moving?

 

Yeah it's a the dealer right now. They were initially going to have a loaner Tundra so I was also hoping to compare with they were out of loaners...they took it last minute so not really mad and we're 8 miles away so I ended up just running home.

I've been watching it on the app and they've had it on the lift since 9:30 am so they must have found something. I'll update.

 

Not all 2nd gens are equal. My crewmax hardly does it at all. Mildly noticeable on some seamed concrete highways. TRD Fox suspension + RAS system.

My neighbor’s 2020 Limited DC is bad though on the same stretch of highway. His truck is bone stock with the Bilstein 4600s it came with from the factory.

I've owned a 2008 Crewmax and a 2015 Crewmax. Both were short beds and non-TRD. Both had a lot more bed bounce than my Gen 3 Crewmax short bed.

 

Agree. Although my 2.5 gen wasn't bad and even better after installing CB shackles and old man EMU shocks.

 

Yeah wayyy to much rolling, somthing's not right. On my crew cab 6.5' bed it doesn't wobble that much over bumps.

 

Did you ever get a resolution to this, mine is doing the same. My dealer said they couldn’t replicate, and I know it’s always easier to tell them exactly what’s wrong. @kramerv

 

You think it shakes over bumps ? Just wait until you get some ice in your rear wheels ! I had to pull over today after just hitting the highway and clean out the rear wheels . Just a small bit of ice, but enough to get the back of the truck dancing like a drunk belly dancer !!!! I should have taken a video .

 

I have 22 crew Max 6.5 bed, had quite a bit of movement on bed and a rattle that was very noticable when back window was down. I loosened all of the bed bolts and it "popped" like tension was being relieved. Re torqued (36 ft/lbs) and rattle/excessive movement is gone.
The dealer might just be torquing the bolts and calling it good. Backing off all of the bolts is what fixed mine

 

@Samuryan thanks for the info. It makes sense (just like torquing wheels without doing a start pattern). Where did you find the torque values from the manual. I was looking and found a diagram online that said something like 67 ft lbs. my only worry doing it myself would be not torquing enough.

I had great results loosening and torquing.
