Now this is the kind of logic I expect from you. And why I too like playing devils advocate for the sake of internet debate. However saying it's a better product is also still subjective. And just because the business side would drop the tundra in a heartbeat due to consumer demand does not make it better overall. Better sales option, yes. Better product, subjective. Sales don't equate to better. We've already accepted this as truth.

The real question is why are you defending @LarryDangerfield's assertion in the first place.

There could possibly be an argument made that the longer model life in the Tundra leads to lower cost and higher margins, but I doubt that would overtake the sales margin of the Taco. As a product the Tundra won't generate the same revenue, is scored in most reliability compilations as slightly lower than the Taco, and retains slightly less resale value. The singular point at which it beats out the Taco is the towing capability. Again, the majority of trucks don't ever tow, so I still don't see that edging it out as a better product than the Tacoma. It is a very niche point that it is better at, where as the Tacoma is better most other metrics.

Now, when you get to the value proposition from a customer stand point, the Tacoma is much harder to justify. Unless you are buying a base model SR the price gap is not huge between the two, and for the money the Tundra is more tow capable. If towing is a higher priority than daily drivability then the Tundra is a more logical choice due to the similarity in pricing.

I will argue that Toyota never has and still doesn’t have a long term strategy for the half ton market. They seem to have one because “all the cool kids do”. If they found their own identity and tried to compete for real, they could easily grab massive market share.

The Taco is a great product and has been for decades… but the other OEMs, including Nissan, have never really tried to go after the Taco.

Interesting. Never seen that movie. Duke was released in ‘91 and the Army of Darkness in early ‘93. The poster for Army of Darkness looks a lot like the Duke cover art.
