One of my favorite memories or our last president was watching him raw dog the sun during the eclipse with no glasses on. Seemed to work for him.

Have you seen an eclipse before? If you aren't in the path of totality it might be underwhelming. It's why we're driving to Arkansas tomorrow to watch it. Really nervous about the traffic but the last eclipse was so awesome I've been planning to travel for this one for 7 years.

We’re all setup for the weekend and eclipse activities for Monday. Staying the night Monday so we don’t have to fight the traffic.

On the path for 90% totality at the moment so it should be quite noticeable. A lot of coworkers are skiing in upstate Vermont this coming Monday to catch it.

Considing adding something like a Crosstrek as a commuter for the mileage, etc. but still want to handle 6-12" snow/ice occasionally, forest sevice style rutted roads and generally not have just a town car. Also hope to do own maintenence and have a reliable car that doesn't need a lot of repair but be able to diagnose and repair if needed. Anyone have advice on the Subaru (@The Black Mamba ?) or other make, model, and gen suggestions?

What's the deal with taking pictures? Someone said you need a special filter for your phone or it will damage the camera.
We're almost packed for early departure. How bad was the traffic on your way? I see the guys on the Arkansas overland page are saying the trails are clogged.

Oregon had a pretty awesome eclipse back in 2017. My friend has some property that was directly in the middle of the path of totality. The property was about 60 miles away. I knew traffic was going to be horrendous, so two wheels it was. My sister rode 2up with one of her daughters on her old 1980 CB400T Hawk, and i 2upped her other daughter (my niece) on the back of my Vespa P200. Zero traffic on the way down (we got there about 2 hours early. But on the way back traffic was EPIC! It was a single lane rural 55mph back highway with traffic stop and go for probably 30 miles! Most of the time my sister and i rode on the gravel shoulder, passing stopped cars on the right. If the shoulder disappeared, we would just ride through the ditch and into a farmer’s field. We rode MANY miles though the fields! We never did have to stop.

The whole eclipse was an awesome experience! It was a warm sunny clear day out, but once totality passed over, everything when pitch black. Like you needed a flashlight to see anything. Also the temperature dropped something like 15 degrees! It got pretty cold really quick. It left me searching for my jacket with a flashlight.

It was definitely a memory i won’t forget. Both my nieces were fairly young, somewhere around 9 and 11 years old. Hopefully they can remember it for their entire lifetime as well!

It also tricked all the insects. They came out and made their usual noises thinking it was nighttime.

Subarus aren’t bad cars, but like with anything they have their quirks. I can guarantee that you will be replacing wheel bearings about every 60,000 miles. Valve body lasts about 100 - 120k. CVTs aren’t that strong for towing, but they are fun to drive in manual mode. They say to do oil changes every 6mo or 6k. I would recommend sooner. I do mine every 3 because I’m anal on maintenance. Other than that, I see front axle failures and the all round issues with the Harmon Kardon infotainment center.

It has come to my attention that there are people in this world who are still boiling their corn.

STOP BOILING YOUR CORN, YOU LAZY SODS

Here’s how to get the best tasting corn on the cob. 2 slivers of butter, fresh ground sea salt, fresh cracked black pepper, wrap in foil. Throw it in the smoker on 275 with hickory wood for about an hour. Unwrap (be careful as steam is hot) and taste the best corn ever.

You know why I parboil my corn before grilling?

I parboil it in nicely kosher-salted water, just like my pasta, and for the same reason: That salt water gets into it, in the nooks and crannies, and leaves the corn nicely salted when eating. Then I toss it on the grill for 5-6 min/side. And when it comes off, I take a whole damn stick of butter, and use it like a fat ass pencil, drawing butter all over the corn, and it melts in nicely. Then stab it with these little bastards so it's easier for everyone to eat.

People also make green beans wrong. You should also parboil those bastards for 2-3 minutes, then shock in cold water bath, then saute them in a pan with butter and garlic. Hit a pinch of kosher salt once during cooking and again when you put them up for serving.

I've been known to do the same. I start my collard/mustard/turnip greens with it. I start my brussells with it. I fry my eggs in it. I start all my soups with it, and sautee various stuff in it, unless I've got someone over who doesn't eat meat/pork (I don't judge, "you do you", but I always ask with new people). People who throw away perfectly good bacon grease are idiots. I cook all my bacon on a sheet pan in the oven to get it perfectly crispy and flat. All the render in the pan gets added to the ball jar in the fridge. Best part about sheet pan bacon is, you don't get any burnt bits, so it's always straight-up bacon flavor.

The experts are saying it CAN damage the CMOS sensor. Doesn’t mean it will to every camera. Personally I’d use one of my old camera phones just in case and I may just do that since I don’t have any glasses. I’m certainly not going to the library to stand in line with all the other jerkwads for a 5 second peek to look through a telescope with a protective lens.

Here’s a photography article and pics from someone renting a digital camera with the sensor that’s damaged. It’s cited to be a common occurance.

Corn pickers is what we called them, only way to fly. I'm a boiler till I die! Put that butter lengthwise on a plate and roll till your happy.
But I can't stand the Huge kernelled stuff, it's like field corn. Guess I got spoiled growing up having a huge garden with the tender young ears.
