For anyone that has had or had bed storage, what have you gone with? I have a 2021 Tundra if it helps. While the DECKED Drawer System looks neat the $1600 price tag is more than I want to pay. I would rather put that money into a suspension upgrade.

I do not wish to drill into the bed, I currently have https://yakima.com/products/overhau...1.1280580699.1712073231-1483305258.1712073228 on the bed. I just need some storage options as I haul a lot of sailing gear, sailboat parts, repair parts, etc. I want to keep them protected and less likely to be stolen if just in a bag or non-attached tub.

Stock, with a few cosmetic mods.
I agree with your objection to the cost of the Decked system. My truck came with it, fortunately, as I never would have purchased for 1600. I will say though its pretty sweet as in cab storage is weak. They do cost you bed height but I’ve seen Decked systems for sale on FB Marketplace as low as 500, which would be a nice score!

I didn't really like what was available on line and the OEM storage boxes were kinda small and over priced, so I built my own.

They did require a few holes to be drilled though.

Bed cap is very nice to have for weather, grime and criminal elements protection. If I have to buy one now, I'd pay more for SmartCap that can accept significant load on top of it.

The reason I went with the Yakama rack was because of the kayaks, and I could put a tent on top if wanted, or even a storage rack. Eventually like to have a storage that I coudl keep spares, tools, and everything else I need for small sailboat racing. A cap would be a good option except for the kayaks I just did not find any caps that I liked that had a rail on top.

You can add rails to any cap, but LEER and ARE are not rated for heavy loads. That's why I mentioned SmartCap.

I plan to eventually add rails to my LEER, but first I need to fabricate a steel frame that goes under the cap and supports the extra weight.

Still, cap is the best option in my opinion. It is basically like 100+ cu.ft of lockable weather-proof storage. I have all my gear dry, and sleep on a removable DIY tote in it while camping out, and use the bed for truck duties when needed.

If you have money for RTT, you have money for SmartCap.

I have the same feeling for my LEER cap. It makes more sense to part out and buy a SmartCap, but, hey, I already have the LEER, right? ;)

Actually, if yours is CrewCab, you can't sleep in 5.5 bed. Then you need a tent, etc.

Crew Cab and a 5.5 bed, however I am only 5'6" so i can squeeze in and sleep...sorta lol yes have done it on my wifes old truck. It had a leer cap which we hated but was a solid truck until someone hit her head on after they were crossing a double yellow line passing illegally. Just glad she is ok.

I often sleep in the back row of my DC, and I'm taller. Guess, a deeper cushions of CrewCab makes it sleeping there even more comfortable.

Not a fan of RTT or awning tents. It immobilizes you basically.

This was my first box, but I found it was just too big:

    Recently switched to this:

    • both are secured to bed with 4 bolts.

I have a cover, two swing cases and the occasional "maybe one day" thoughts for other options.

Is that a Yakama Overland HD rack? Did you have to drill into the bed to install the swing cases?

OVS Freedom Rack. I chose this one because at the time, it was the only adjustable rack with cross bars. Yakama fixed that statement, but I do what I can to not buy their brand regardless (just a personal thing).

It is mounted directly to the tracks on the retrax pro.

Yes sir, and I had to drill a little differently than others as these swing cases came out of my totaled Ram, so they didnt mount the same as the ones made for the Tundra. Either way, swing cases will put holes in any bed. That said, safe, durable, strong, easily removeable..... I love these things.

I bit the bullet and threw a SmartCap on my crewmax. I had to remove my weather guard saddle toolbox that I was very attached to. Replaced it with a pelican bx255 cargo case. Very pleased overall, though I do get a little water in the front corners when I’m on the road during a downpour.
