bad news from gunnison

    Not sure if anyone else saw this but it's worthwhile sharing. Happened near Gunnison in the last day or two.

    I don't know all the details but it sounds like both occupants were ejected as the LC went for a 600' tumble down the mountain. 1 dead. 1 critical. Just a reminder to stay safe and pay attention to what you're doing out there. Positive vibes to the friends and family members involved.

    Not sure. I'm not going to make any public assumptions. This is the description I came across...

    • offroadjonesWe're addressing this now before rumors start:
      Two days ago, heartbreak struck when a vehicle traveling with us on the Lost River Expedition went over the edge in the mountains near Gunnison, Colorado. Without going into details, both Travis and Harley were ejected prior to the Land Cruiser coming to rest more than 600 feet below the road. We raced down a lower path and ran up the mountain to find our friends. Very tragically, Travis did not make it. Harley had head trauma, a shattered lower leg, and a compressed lung. @northidahomudncrawl administered first aid and gave him oxygen until we were able to get him off the mountainside. Harley is in rough shape, but we’re so happy to report that he’s stable and awake at the hospital in Grand Junction, and will hopefully be flying back home to Washington tomorrow.
      Feel free to share these pictures—as a reminder that tragedy can strike even when you’re having fun, and to please, please always be careful.

    Just another reminder to try and stay up to date on your first aid. Yes, this is an extreme example and very little could be done in the field especially with head trauma and a collapsed lung. But, take a Wilderness First Aid class and have a med kit that can handle a bit beyond the basics. With what we do with our trucks and where we put them, being able to calmly handle a sprain, fracture, burn, laceration, etc. is a skill to have. I've had to use it on family, friends and total strangers. Know how to assess and stabilize. What to say to the medics on the phone and once they get on site. If you're calm, the patient and everyone else involved will be calm. And, if you're in a situation where someone dies on you, please, go talk to someone if it becomes too much. Years later, I still have visions of situations where I wish I had made different decisions, been there faster, etc.

    Some sad news. After taking a 600' roll down a mountain side, hard to stay in the vehicle with factory 3 point seat belts.

    After my last outing, some more mods are coming for my highly likely rolled over Jeep cage. It happens so fast and slow at the same time. Hard to explain.

    I know what it feels like. Totally get it.

    On my list is to change the front seats and put in 5 point harnesses. I need to do more research and find a way to do it safely and still retain use of the back seat.

    Different suspension seats and you are good to go.

    Check out Twisted Stitch seats...that would fit your quality requirements with your build.

    I know exactly what you mean. It's like things are happening in slow motion, but in an instant. You're right, hard to explain.

    Sad news for sure, RIP Travis, and my prayers for a speedy recovery for Harley.

    Same here. My guess, and I hate to do this, would be inexperience with shelf roads. Spots of Engineer get really narrow. If you're not paying attention, in the dark and things start to slide, I can see it getting away from you before you have any idea what happened. If I hear/see anything else, I'll share.

    That was my thought. A roll like that and I doubt a cage and 5 point would have saved them. Getting ejected is probably why one of them lived.

    Thanks for the update. I would also agree that a wheel went off the trail and that was the end of that night run. I couldn't imagine trying to administer life saving first aid in the dark, fully knowing they were most likely dead, and had a darn good chance of being hurt as well.

    Engineers Pass is a moderate trail due to steep drop offs and narrow shelf roads, during the day time hours. Most high clearance 4x4 would navigate this with ease. Now, in my opinion, whatever that is worth, at night Engineers Pass turns to a more hard trail rating. Would I do Engineers Pass at night? No...and you guys know the "moderate" wheeling I do....even at night. Engineers Pass is for daytime hours, with just wonderful Colorado views and beauty. If anyone comes to CO, I would do it in any 4x4 Tundra on this site.

    For me, this is what I will take from this, and maybe someone else will too.

    -Pick your poison. Risk vs. Reward. This perticular trail is a scenic one. It has way more to offer during the daylight then ever at night...no matter how many LED bro bars you have. I like to ask myself a question or two when wheeling:
    1) what is the worst that can happen on this trail?
    2) How am I getting out when the "worst" happens?
    - Paying attention, at all costs. If you can't see, kick your co-pilot out and have them spot for you. If you are by yourself, get out and look. I recently posted up a short video of me going up a pretty extreme spot on a wild trail. That was all spotter that got me up that huge boulder....nothing else. Was the driver fatigued from all the festivities of the long day? Hard to say, but something distracted him...and maybe he panicked a little and hit the gas pedal instead of the brake pedal.
    - At night, you should never outrun your lights (the uberfart fast guys can appreciate that). This means you should never exceed the speed where when recognizing an object in the road, you can't stop. Fine example of that is when on a motorcycle, and you see an Elk in the road. One would rather be going 59 mph instead of 75 mph...trust me.
    - Last, but most important, sometimes it is just your time, and there is nothing you can do about it. When the Man upstairs calls you home...you're coming whether you want to or not.

    I hate hearing about these accidents and how many live's this will tear apart. We just need to muster up the courage to go back out again in their honor.

    Man, that picture is unreal. Positive thoughts to all involved. I’ve often thought about this scenario when driving through Colorado roads. So many places for it to happen out here unfortunately.
