National Highway & Traffic Saftey Administration wants to pass an administrative rule that allows them access to vehicle data for research that will later lead to safety interlocks & other protocols to prevent drunk/impaired driving. They would like to view data that is captured by steering, throttle input, brake pedal use, eye sensor cameras & etc... See the hyperlink below for the proposed rule.

Let me preface this by saying I believe a few people involved in this proposed rule from NHTSA want to do "good" and prevent vehicular fatalities from impaired driving. However, I feel this is really a dangerous journey towards infringing upon privacy rights and would be difficult to regulate. I recognize that modern cars are so heavily equipped with sensors that I am sure manufacturers are already collecting so much data to begin with. I don't want drunk drivers on the road putting others at risk, but I also don't want the government to have my driving habits for future policy or rule-making.

I was in the auto industry from 2009 to 2021 with Toyota & Lexus. Now, I am a paralegal with a small (growing) understanding of constitutional law and administrative bureaucracy. With the combination of those two careers, I am not sure I ever want to own a modern vehicle. Especially nothing with a camera, radar cruise control, hydro booster brakes, etc. Like 1996 to 2015 seems to be the sweet spot

What are everyone's thoughts on this proposed rule by NHTSA?
