So I'm basically where you'd be if you didn't slow down, cause I haven't. 6'2" and about 250 fully dressed. That's how the Dr weighs me. I need to change something or I'm gonna end up at 300. And not the one with Gerard butler. I'm pretty sure it has something to do with the 30-36 beers I drink on the weekend, garbage disposal diet, and not physically working anymore.

Not physically working will fuck you up fast with that diet.
Ask me how I gained almost 200lbs in a decade. Better yet, don't ask. Do. Get off your ass and workout.

You got to be the change you want in life. As an overweight person with a sedentary job and clinical depression, nothing has ever helped my mental and physical health more than the last 8 months I've been walking, pool aerobics, and weight lifting.

Start out out small. At least one healthy meal or snack per day (to replace a bad meal or snack, assuming you eat two or three meals a day), and a 1 mile walk.
Once that's easy musical memory, a habit, you slowly turn up the volume on your workouts. I started with 10lbs dumbbells 1.5 years ago. Now I'm lifting 30 and 40lbers. I started by walking 1 mile every morning and one every evening. Now I walk about 35 miles a week.

I believe in you brother Beau.
If I can turn this big, hot mess around, so can you.

I want you to know I write this while eating Ben and Jerry's. It's my night off haha

Yeah, I gotta get off my ass and stop being a lazy piece of shit. I'm just stuck in a rut and need to find a way out. I'm trying to think of what it's called, when you're basically just on auto pilot. Same routine day in and day out.

    Depression.

Don't be too hard on yourself about being a lazy piece of shit. Even if you are.
The key is the be less lazy and less shitty, little by little, day by day, til you realize you're feeling better mentally and physically, despite and in spite of anything and everything else in your life (except family of course).

Your right about the mental part. I was put in a zero physical position for 4yrs and it just about killed me. Near the end of it I started biking to and from work. Lost about 40, and popped up out of a bad depression. I've gained a bit back since then though... on my way out and mentoring/training my replacement.... and winter around here... and my fkn shoulder and knee are showing some wear and tare. But getting in that sweet mental groove is pretty awesome

Exercise is one of the best things you can do for your mental and physical health. Even something as simple as walking. Proper sleep helps a lot too. I'm like and old man and typically asleep by 2200.

I got a little under 4 hours. I just couldn't sleep. I thought it was the ADD meds so I stopped taking them and it went back to fine. Now, outta the blue, 2 nights in a row of bad/not enough sleep. I need to get on meth or something. That'll solve the sleep and weight issue.

I call that Groundhog Day. I've gotta shake shit up every two weeks or so or I'll go insane.

30-36 Michelob's over the weekend is an extra day of calories every week.

    On the workout front:
To get started find something you enjoy that increases your activity level that isn't just a workout. You'll have more fun and still see the benefits of being more active without the pressure to get the workout in. This could be as simple as riding your motorcycle, or wrenching on the truck.

We still need to go pillage the Toyotas at h&h for all the useful bits. I want that "good" 4.7 to have in stock as a backup, and we could pull the sequoia rear axle for your truck. A long hot day in the junkyard won't feel like a workout, but I bet it'll whoop your ass

I know this place like the back of my hand. I can take you to some cool seldom seen places with insane views if you're interested. Just be prepared to bushwhack uphill for an hour or two to get there.

All of this is to say you have recognized that you want to make a change, and a lot of people won't even get that far. Start small and grow from there. In a years time you will be shocked.

    Agreed

I can testify that alcohol is a depressant. It's not the fix that keeps you going. It's the weight that holds you back.

Indeed. I'm prescribed 27mg of methylphenidate.

I'm down for the junkyard whenever you're ready. I might just buy a new booster just cause, and we can pull the JY one for a spare.

It very well could be. I've just lost all motivation to do anything. Trucks been sitting for 2 weeks now waiting on a booster I haven't even ordered yet. Not to mention the TB, WP, and radiator just chilling. I don't think it's prozac-ey levels but probably something. I just need to follow up on what y'all are saying and get my ass moving.

You can actually keep the garbage disposal diet in some cases, if you change the other things. It depends on how bad it is. The beers are the huge empty calorie thing, but alcoholism is real, and it may not feel like it, but that's alcoholic behavior. See if you can switch to drinking something else that tastes exactly like beer but doesn't get you drunk. If you "don't like it" and go back, that should tell you something. But from a practical perspective, drinking that much beer is just as bad as drinking 30-36 cans of full-calorie soda ... it may be worse, actually, depending what type of beer it is.

I bet if you just cut out the beer, totally, for a month, you'll lose 5-10lb. But it's no substitute for doing something active, to replace the activity you're not getting 6-8hrs/day anymore.

    This ^^
"Everything in moderation, including moderation." You don't have to toe the line all the time, as long as going outside the line won't send you off the cliff.

Assdog beat me to it. Classic depression. And I think several others chimed in the same, because they, like me, have been there too. Some of us still are there.

I mentioned this a few times on here recently, my teeth clenching, my shit sleeping, it was almost entirely the beer. I realized the more beer I drank, the worse I slept. While I went to sleep faster (alcohol is a depressant), I slept like complete shit, would wake up multiple times a night, snored like hell. It took about 2 weeks of not drinking to get past most of that.

I had a beer with dinner at a pizza place last night, just me and the boy. First beer I've had in at least 2 weeks. It was tempting to grab a 6pk at the store two doors down to drink at home. It felt a hell of a lot better not to.

I also was a cross country runner. I started racing back when i was in 4th grade. I kept training and racing (both XC, road races 10k to marathon lengths) all the way up to my mid-30th. Finally a long time calf muscle facia injury slowed me waaay down. I started going to the gym about 7 years ago. I joined the spin class there for the sole purpose to strengthen my legs so that i could ride/race a dirtbike better. It turned out to be a game changer for me on the dirtybike (as well as on my bicycle). I then noticed other areas where my muscles would be sore after a 3-6 hour moto race, so then i focused on working those muscles as well. Turns out that racing dirbikes is a full body workout, so i began to show up at the gym earlier and earlier to get a longer and longer workout in. For the past 4-5 years, my currently workout is about 3.5 hours long. I will super-set lifting weights for about 2.5 hours, then do a 1 hour spin class afterwards (usually mix in some running and swimming too). I do that 3 days a week. I have absolutely no idea how many calories i take in or burn. I also have no concept of what a calorie is equal to. Like someone could say 10 or 10,000 calories and i don't know if that's a standard meal or a smorgasbord at Kenny Roger's Chicken Roasters.

Just to give everyone and idea, i'm currently 48.5 years old. I'm guessing the main reason i've also been slim/skinny/lean is because i have always always have been working out my whole life. I'd like to think good genes play a role as well, but both my parents eat like crap, to they're fat. My sister used to go to the gym with me and we would sit right next to each other in the spin class and compete against each other for the full hour. She quit going to the gym about 3 years ago and now she's putting on the pounds. When i was younger i was totally about being skinny. It was easier on my joints AND that it meant there was less weight so that i could run faster. So all the way up to my mid-20's my running friends and i would focus on staying close to around 150 lbs...which wasn't very difficult for us to do when training to run. So none of us felt self conscious about our weight. We simply had the optimal body weight for the running goals we were after. Since i don't run like i used to, my goal has been to gain more lean body mass (aka, muscle) so that i have a more rounded strength fitness. I'm currently right about 6' 161lbs. I'd like to bump that up to 165lbs, but it has been very challenging.

So which high school did you run at?

First off, i'm not trying to be crass here...
For all the overweight guys out there, here's a bit of common/uncommon knowledge...that the subcutaneous fat layer (aka the "fat pad") that's located in your belly WILL create a buried/hidden penis syndrome. It will affect some men more than others. But if you lose the fat, you WILL have a visibly larger wanger. And that's pre covid science, so you can 100% count on it being accurate.

Short story, one of my good buddies (he's married) went on a diet and dropped about 64lbs (down to around 5' 10.5",190lbs). I hadn't seen him for about 4 months, so it surprised me how trim he looked. We were talking about his weight loss, and with a smirk on his face he looked to both his left and right (to make sure no one else could hear him), leaned in and said, "since i lost weight my dic*got bigger...a lot bigger". We both laughed, but he was SUPER stoked about it! So pro tip...if you need or want a bit more motivation to loose weight, then that could be a reason right there? Just remember that it's impossible to loose weight overnight. It takes dedication and hard work for the long haul.

    Depends.
Some are completely different stimulants, like Concerta, Ritalin.
Some are closer to meth because they're amphetamines, like Adderall and Vyvanse. Some are way different non stimulants like Stratera.

I feel this. I didn't touch my trucks for months after I lost my job last September. If it weren't for the fact that I had started my weight loss journey a month prior and kept it up throughout my unemployment and eventually got a new job and am still working out every day, I'd be a complete mess right now... But one day a few weeks before I finally started working again, I awake from my depression and had an excess of mental and physical energy just begging me to get off my ass and start wrenching. So I spent every day for a week wrenching on my Tundras. Getting a tons of little things done that I had been putting off for a year or so. Plus some big things. Casey even came and helped me knock out some suspensions stuff.

I’m still on the NA beer train. It works. I honestly never really cared about the buzz. I liked the Costco session IPA’s at 4% but then those went away. The 8% IPA’s are just too nuts. I do like the taste though. So NA for me and it works fine. Going on 6 months now, stopped real beer on 9/12.

Everyone raining on parades. I eat what i want, at least i'm not cold everytime i was into a/c. I drink imbibe so i can have fun & not brood. I stay active, lots of work on 5 acres. Moveing rocks, sifting dirt. Guess you could call me a nerdy digger. I also get told to get rid of my junk, drive a new car, watch the news, sign up for regular social media & subscriptions. Aint happenin. I want my carcass tasty for my dog in case i fail. But i also stretch & sometime have to harness my inner guru & do some yoga to fix my knee or neck. ADD/ADHD aint half bad if you're on your time.

beer has saved me from dumping $20k into a truck prematurely. Quickdraw money dump & i'd have LT, but couldnt have used it as a truck, then i'd have gotten the cap & have to start modifying things twice. Set unrealistic goals like f/r dual-I-beams and 4ws, a 1vd td hooked to a built taco 6-spd, & suspension seats, then you really have to start hunting or making parts & it gives you time to work out what you really want. Including the brakes rebuild when i first got it, with suspension, lights, rear seat delete, and cap i'm at a well spent $2k & havent had to sell anything yet. Thinking i might just paint my wheels every couple of years or so instead of powdercoating.

@bmf4069 take some vacation, i've got a gulag...i mean crossfit program where you can lift weights, and also work on core strength & mental exercises like planning and leverage, and balance... all the good stuff. You can fight a 120lb dog while moving rocks.

we'll use these to build up the backstop for the shooting lane.

    aka 'Dick-do"

His belly hang out farther than his dick do. Nobody wants a dick-do.

Proof positive: Every little "win", no matter how small, is great medicine to squash depression. It only takes a spark to start a wildfire (*puts on Smokey hat*), the whole thing is, you've gotta START. Start with anything. Tempted to grab a beer from the fridge? Think of something small you need to do on the truck and go do that instead.

And check your activities. If you find that sitting in front of a screen makes you want to have a cold beer in your hands, maybe postpone when you start screen time, or cut out the screen time for a little bit, find something else to do with your hands (other than fapping, unless fapping helps, I guess). You may find one thing is the instigator to snowball effects. Like, you sit on the couch, and that makes you want to play games, which makes you want to drink beers, which makes you want to eat lots of shitty junk food, which leads to you taking in 3-4000 calories right before bedtime, where you sleep like ass b/c of the booze. Take a long look at it, see where this is starting and think about ways you can tweak. Force yourself to set time limits on screens. Force yourself to set quantity limits on beer, or cut it out totally. Challenge yourself to give up beverages in containers and start drinking water for 4 weeks, just to see how you feel.

That's the hard part for me. I legitimately like the taste and smell of hops. I also like the smell of green bud, but I don't like the taste or smell of it burnt, else I'd probably want to smoke all the time too.
