I don't think I will get a Ford because my college buddy bought a 2022 Ford the same time I bought my tundra, so not only did he have to wait 6 months for his Lariat, but when he got it, he had 2 transmission recalls and it still gave him problems.

I drive a company truck, so I will sometimes only drive my truck 2-3 times a month to go fishing, help my uncle on the farm for some side cash, etc. He was not lucky enough to have a company car so his Girlfriend was dropping him off at work and picking him up. Both our trucks are 2022's, I am about to hit 20k miles on mine, and his has 23k miles. But his would have a lot more if it wasn't in the shop for about 4 months of all the work he had done (cumulative). I guess it took me this long to complain because I have been so busy with work, and would hope that one day, when I update my truck, it just work for these few complaints I had.

I love my truck otherwise, Toyota has definitely impressed me with the build quality, and I will say the 3 recalls I have had concerned me, but they fixed all of them in one morning, and made it easy, unlike Ford where my buddy waited a few days each time his had problems (I am guessing because of scale, More fords means more recalls to fix).

And a few other questions I have had about my truck I have found solutions in this forum page, I see the community for Tundra's are for the most part genuinely nice who answer and explain things. I'd say I am 95% happy with this purchase.

I got lucky and was suckered into buying some bitcoins in 2015, so when I went to school I got out with no student debt, a nice truck, and got to live in a pretty nice apartment. Otherwise I would not have been able to afford a nicer newer truck. My logic was, buy a truck out of college, save up money for a down payment on some land, and pay the truck off after 3 years so I can have a brand low mileage truck while building equity in a property. I kind of wish that I would have kept my truck and dumped a lot into investments, but the housing market interest rates in my area in 2022 was like 11%, and I almost threw up looking at the interest rates. So I got the truck and just started building a portfolio because it is outgrowing the negative cost of interest vs the amount I would have built equity in a home.

Good mindset you have, but you've got a wrong truck. At least, a wrong model year.

What year is a good model? From what I have seen this gen seems to still run good, I mean albeit the annoying niches. I also wanted a 6 cylinder for gas mileage, and I was used to having the Ford Ecoboost which is the same size engine. Again, probably was a dumb idea, but I wanted New because I had never owned new, and never been able to afford it/justify it. But when I ended up not being able to afford a house while sitting on a pretty chunk of savings, I figured why not.

My parents were poor, and I vowed to never be that way. I retired at 45 mostly because I was a working fanatic in my 20s and 30s. And I married a career driven women who made good money. That helped too.

This is the first year of the new platform. A rule of thumb is to avoid 2-3 first years of production.

Tundra's reputation is built upon first and second generations. Third is have to prove itself yet, but it had some harsh starting with quality and reliability.

Same. My woman and me made enough for us to retire in under 15 years. We can both retire despite having debt and 3 kids to send to college. But the income keeps accelerating, so here I am, sitting steady on my butt and weeping over a real life flowing by. I really hope my current gig is the last one and I can spend what remains of my health on something more remarkable than just making money.

So you're driving a new $70K truck while renting an apartment? Yeah, that was a dumb idea. That new car smell is addicting, though.

That was a LOT of words to say you invested in and are paying interest on a depreciating asset (your truck), instead of investing in an appreciating asset (a home). And you are throwing away money on rent. You may be paying less on a monthly basis, but your money isn't doing anything for you. I've noticed basic finances are a mystery to a lot of younger folks these days, so you aren't alone.

Edit: Breathing Borla is correct. My apologies for getting off topic.

I tried to pull into traffic yesterday. Right turn. Required me to jump in and quickly get up to speed. Gave it good throttle and bam the truck shut me down. Basically dead in the water waiting for computer to let me go. Felt like an idiot because guy I tried to get in front of had to basically stop for me.

Unlike buying a first year of new gen I see nothing wrong with renting an apartment in a place where you do not intend to spend a large chunk of your life. Long ago wife convinced me to buy a property that we were barely making to pay for in a couple of years. We never lived in there, renting it out was a hassle and never paid itself. The prices dropped, we lost about 50% of what's been invested into it. I learned the lesson.

Now, back on track, to trucks =) That $45k Tundra will cost just gas money and keep its resale value high. The new $70k Tundra, being a bad year for Tundra, is very expensive to fix outside of warranty. The fix is laborious and we have evidence it went bad for some owners. That's why the resale value of exactly that model year won't be as high as previous reputable trucks have. 40k miles on Gen2? Pffft, 400k miles won't talk me away.

So I haven't really noticed a large dip in the value of my truck. I mean I am still positive but was positive in less than a year of payments. My DP was probably larger than most but since this is my first new truck, I have nothing to compare history wise. I also got lucky in my previous truck and bought a used 2016 F150 in 2019 for 22k$, drove it ALOT for 3 years, then traded it in for 23k$ because the used market was that bad. And the Toyota dealership sold my 2016 F150 with 85k miles in 2022, 2 weeks after I traded it, for 40k$. So I did not buy a used truck specifically at that time because I wasn't going to spend that kind of money to watch a used truck depreciate. I could at least justify depreciating a new truck.

But I have seen some older Tacomas and 4Runners people are selling used for crazy amounts of money. I plan on helping my girl get a new car and we are both in love with 4runners, but they have not redesigned them in 10+ years and I am not paying 50k$ for 10 year old tech. She is getting by with a 2015 Honda CRV with 150k+ miles for now. And we will upgrade it once Toyota has a decent enough overhaul with them, which I expect soon.

Idk, I mean I looked at all the big truck companies at the time (minus Nissan), and for a similar spec Limited tundra (i.e: Lariat, Big Horn, and High Country) they are about the same price. All with their own unique problems. I know that the other other 3 don't hold their value like a Toyota. One of the biggest reasons I used Ford before switching over was the cost of maintenance I found to be lower. But my local Ford dealership stripped my lug nuts twice and tried to charge me 600$ both times to replace them. I had to explain to them that I never took my tires off, and always got them rotated with them (I keep receipts). So if my lug nuts are stirpped, then they stripped them.

That is a different tangent, but my point is trucks in general are drastically more expensive. I'd say most base models (not including SR's or work model's) are starting around 45k.

That's because they are old tech, tough as coffin nails, like prev. gen Tundra used to be. Look at new turbo Tacoma at TFL which broke trying to climb the hill after Colorado made there without hiccups.

Whatever this forum told me to do
my son drives my old '15 4Runner.

it's tough as a brick shithouse.

    dead simple.

    reliable.

we offered to get him a new ride when he graduated.
he turned us down because he loves the 4Runner.
and he would rather drive the old 4R than a new ride in downtown Houston.

I mean I don't plan on doing serious off-roading with mine. I just need it to be able to get itself through some farm mud, and some boat launches with less than good parking. If I was to get into offroading I'd buy a jeep. Something under 10k$. I never understood people offroading in Daily Drivers/ cars worth a damn. I always wanted a 90's Bronco because my grandfather had one at his hunting camp, but they are selling for like 20k$ plus which is a waste.

But yeah I don't think new cars are good for Off-Roading/ trailing. But if people want to spend their money trying to make new cars do those things, I get it. It is kind of upsetting that absolutely no modern car manufacturer will build a new car with those things in mind. I mean Jeep kind of tries, but I always see new jeeps just struggle, because of poor build quality. I also hate how Toyota along with other companies make "TRD Off-Road" when this truck needs tons on modifications to become viable and it still isn't worth it because cost of fixing anything that breaks is too high.

I always see these posts, and it kind of makes me want to get one, then just upgrade the screen and technology myself. She wants wireless apple car play and I'm starting to think the play is to just buy used with low mileage and just pay extra for a screen

the gas pedal on a '15 4R is a mere suggestion to speed up.

Me and my girlfriend don't plan on track racing soon. We do plan on buying property and living in a camper/trailer while we build a house instead of buying a cookie cutter. So we might be gravel drivewaying it for a bit. We mainly want a reliable SUV that can fit 1-2 kids in next 6-7 years, that lasts and won't cost crazy amounts in maintenance. The 4runner is tempting and we will be in the market for one in 3-4 months. Our options are to wait for the next gen and get that, or get a used previous gen hopefully under 40k miles.

So the 4runner being slow is probably at the absolute bottom of our concerns. One of my top concerns is that my girlfriend is busy in school, and can be forgetful sometimes when it comes to silly little things like oil changes or transmission flushes. Not crazy forgetful but I have caught her CRV 1500 miles past an oil change more than I would like to have.

take the lesson learned with your new gen Tundra and buy a current gen 4Runner before the new one comes out with all the problems it's going to have

I had the dealer reset my settings. Not intentionally, but if the reprogram some ECU for a recall or something similar yes it does get reset. However, you can just get a month of Carista for $10. Not much consolation, but there is a way out of it.

Its been my experience that you can't get away from all these nanny options no matter what make/model you buy these days - I'm still undecided if its in the name of safety, babysitting of idiots who aren't really paying attention to their driving, or its a natural advancement of technology.

Sell Tundra, buy 2nd gen Sequoia. Two of you can actually live in it like in a tent. With two rows folded it can substitute for truck when needed, too. Seats 6-7 adults with comfort. The toughest large SUV of the past decade+.

I would not make the same mistake you did by buying your girlfriend the first model year of the new Gen 4Runner. I'd find a slightly used one. My wife absolutely loves her 2022 4Runner. It doesn't have all the new tech like my Tundra does, but she prefers it that way. In some ways, so do I.
