I'm about to pull the trigger on getting the 4 door windows tinted to match the topper.
My question is, does anyone have experience with windshield tinting? I'm at the age when your eye site starts to go vacation and never comes back... My father complained about driving at night and I was concerned future me would be pissed at past me when that time comes.

I have my windshield tinted from the previous owner, we think it is 30%.

My advice, dont. I am most likely going to do what I did in Texas with my other trucks and that is to strip the tint and then replace with clear tint to block UV and lower heat, without making it darker to see out of.

I have had zero issues with cops in over 12 states, but I hate driving my truck at night. The problem is, i dont do it alot. So I dont think about it and then I do. and when I do, I want to cut it off on the spot. During the day, I love it. dawn, dusk and night are annoying.

Tinting the Windshield is the dumbest thing you can do for a few reasons. Sunglasses make way more sense, I have prescription sunglasses as well as transition glasses for day time driving. If you dont wear sunglasses at night, you shouldn't be tinting your windshield and driving at night. Also the windshield is the only window that you are almost guaranteed to replace at some point during ownership so now you will be losing the money it cost to tint when you replace it. Last reason is its illegal in many states and even if its not in yours, if you travel across state lines you are just drawing attention to get pulled over since most upstanding citizens do not do such silly things to a vehicle.

Yes and no. If you're in Texas heat, tinted windshield pays off at so many levels despite the fact that is illegal. At night I drive just fine with it. I have it on all my cars and is worth it for me. Only one time I had to redo it due to a bad crack from a rock. It was just $200 so no biggie. But at the end of the day is a personal preference regardless of ones opinion :)

It's not so much the windshield itself being tinted that is an issue. The ceramic windshield tints are "clear" with a slightly smoked appearance when looking out from the inside of the vehicle. It's the other windows that affect the darkness. On my truck, I have 5% on all windows and 50% on the windshield. When I park in the sun, you can barely see the steering wheel from a distance. The wife's 4Runner has 15% all around, and 50% on the windshield. It's hard to tell that her windshield is even tinted.

20 years in the film business…wanted to chime in.
Honestly the windshields done in a 70-80% transparency are very helpful with minimal night driving issues.
On average a cut around 30-35% of the suns energy …def worthwhile and def some comfort from glare
Not for the bad stuff …no many states legally allow a film on the windshield.
I’m in NC and even with a tint exempt waiver I’m only supposed to do the front doors down to 20% and a visor/strip is allowed down to the AS1 line which sometimes looks pretty silly depending on the curve where that mark falls in the glass
Plenty of guys will say “I’ve never had a problem with 50% or 35% on a windshield” but many don’t understand it is illegal to install it…drive around with it…& for a inspector to pass it (if applicable).
NC is pretty strict and rumor mill is saying law enforcement is actively tightening up
I turn down jobs almost everyday because I’m not willing to do 5% on front doors and windshield super dark.
To me …just not worth it to think something I did endangered a bunch of drivers because of a knucklehead tryin to look cool!
Looks like you got a ARE topper w/ windoors …those sides are a pain in the neck to tint…I opted for a easy curtain system and only tinting the rear glass of the topper
My front and rear doors are done in 18%

I have very sensitive eyes and I have 50% on my windshield. It makes a world of difference.

I did 70% on my windshield and that’s the legal limit in Tennessee for windshield tint. Honestly it isn’t even noticeable and keeps a considerable amount of heat out if using ceramic tint. Highly recommended it if you want it for heat protection. Other than that not really worth it. Draws unwanted attention from cops if to dark and at night I wouldn’t want to drive with anything darker than 70% on the windshield.

I did 70% on the windshield and like it. It's not dark and helps with the heat. Recommend going with a quality ceramic film.

I did 20% tint on the side windows and often find myself cracking the windows to see better at night when making sharp turns haha (did not tint the windshield at all). Maybe a middle ground would be doing a visor tint strip (I think thats what its called?) across the top of the windshield? I don't care for the looks of it, but might work for you?

I have the same on my 2 trucks, 5% on all windows and 50% on the windshield and for Texas heat I can tell the difference. Never had an issue with the law or inspection since 2013, I guess if you know the right places to go :)

Some of us have a medical exemption due to the simple fact that sun glasses aren't always enough.

I would recommend 70-80% ceramic tint for your windshield. It's almost clear and you can't really tell it's there but it does help with heat rejection.

I'm in pain when I get out of my vehicle; is that the answer you are looking for, or do you need a more detailed explanation?

I was fortunate enough to sustain a TBI and one of the many super powers I gained from it is the inability to tolerate bright light

It would also seem I gained the ability to attract overly opinionated "massholes" who know more than my ophthalmologist and neurologist.

Sunglasses have the same effect as tint, just available to take on and off and not effect night driving. Anyone that is tinting their windshield is not actually doing it for any legitimate health reason that sunglasses dont have the same exact effect on. Now if you walk around with a windshield infront of you instead of wearing sunglasses outside of your truck then I guess you have a case.

Fun fact, clear windshields are already treated to block UV rays.

Yes …laminated glass is already a UV blocker but heat still passes thru easily …no denying a 70-80% film can help with that. Sometimes advertised as ‘acoustic glass’ many manufacturers are using laminated glass in the front doors. New 3rd gen Tundras , premium Ford trucks and Rovers to name a couple.
Clearly you are against the windshield tinting just want to share not all tint shops are about sketchy installs and just up-selling for a higher price point.
Film technology has made huge advances past few years that show you don’t need it suspect dark for some results and relief in hotter climates

You're obviously entitled to your opinion, as am I and if you look at my first reply to this thread it has more likes than either of yours, just showing that people do agree with me. Id hazard to guess that 99.9% of vehicles on the road do not have their windshield tinted and somehow are surviving the day. Most everyone out on the road that sees you with your windshield tinted automatically thinks you are either trying to look cool or up to no good, maybe the case is neither but its the perception that people have when they see things like that. Its similar to when you see a Honda civic with a giant wing on the back and a fart can muffler, you automatically assume an opinion about the driver before seeing them, whether right it or wrong.

Some people just need to argue and be right. Even when they’re wrong. Commonly referred to as “being a dick”.

Fun fact: Several dickish lifestyle and social choices have been documented to find people becoming full fledged, lifelong dicks. There are various therapeutic treatments available, but the common dick is often too resistant to change and will forever simply be a dick.

It’s a real issue and often considered a pandemic. It’s too bad that one of the most prevalent symptoms is their need to make their problems others’ problems.

I have my front windows matched to the rear (20% is what the tint shop put on) and my windshield has 50% ceramic tint. I can say it’s night and day difference on the heat and the glare living on the Florida/Georgia state line. And no, I can’t tell any difference whatsoever with night time driving. The tint on my front windows is a whole lot more inconvenient for night driving than the windshield. And no, from the front of the vehicle, you can’t tell it’s tinted. I’ve asked several people and nobody has told me yet that they can tell. I’ve had 5% on all my windows and a brow strip on the top of the windshield on all my vehicles until my tundra and this is a whole lot more driver friendly with the whole windshield done and the lighter windows. You can put your hand on the black dash in the middle of summer when it’s 100 degrees and it’s barely warm to the touch

There is no right or wrong here, unless you're going by legality by the majority of states which would say it's wrong. Somebody posted on the forum asking people's opinions on window tint, I gave mine obviously yours differs. It's still stands that 99% of people do not tint their windshield and it's my opinion that its a ridiculous thing to do unless you never drive after dark. I have experience with tint I've had vehicles tinted up to 20% all the way around minus the windshield and I would absolutely not tint the windshield because I frequently travel at night and live where it gets dark very early in the winter. It's always the people that can't actually contribute any type of useful information to a debate that resort to name calling and just respond with laughter. Now if you have some medical condition where you wear sunglasses while driving at night without it being a danger then I guess I could see some argument there other than that sunglasses are still a way better option, and trying to say that window tint and sunglasses are completely different is just silly because they're exactly the same exact thing tinted glass or plastic that prevents light from coming through into your eyes. If you want to argue heat while parked they do still sell those things that people used in the '90s and put in their windshield to block the sun from coming through the windshield and it actually blocks 100% of it rather than whatever percent your tint is so would be more effective.

If you put a sunshade in, then you will see that it's tinted. I have 5% all around with 50% on the windshield and you can definitely tell it's tinted from the outside.
