hey guys, I recently put new brakes on my truck, and noticed a loud rubbing or scraping sound while turning, and while just driving straight for the first time of the ride. The noise while going straight goes away after a few mins, but it always does it when turning. Based on some searching around, I think I have it nailed down to the backing plate in the rear wheels - I just don't know exactly what people are referring to by that? I want to find whatever it is and grind it down or bend it out of the way, does anyone who has dealt with this have pics of exactly what is rubbing so I know what I'm looking for when I take my rear wheels off?

Did you do your brakes? If so, did you put them back together the same way you took them apart? Did you just do pads or did you do rotors and pads.

Sounds like you bent the dust shield a bit and it is scraping the rotor....

I grabbed this from Google, the shiny black thing behind the rotor and caliper is the dust shield. Make sure it doesn't get close or make contact with the rotor at all.

I know what the dust shield is, I guess I read it was something to do with the ebrake backing plates or something and grinding them down? I just wasn't sure if that was something different.

This... I've done this myself once too... Easy mistake to make... You'll only make it once if that noise scared the crap out of you like it did me

To test that ride your ebrake alittle when it would normally happen see if it still does or goes away. Also check the play in your e brake pedal. Maybe engage/disengage a few times.
I haven't done brakes on my Tundra yet, but typically with rear disc brakes the e brake pads are inside and will expand out like an old drum brake. On other vehicles there is a hole in the rotor, usually with a rubber plug, once you remove the rubber plug you can see a notched dial inside. To expand the e brake pads you turn it one direction, to bring them in, the opposite.

I'm not a tech though, just learned some things in the driveway. Good luck!

I too think its your dust shield, mine did the same thing. It is very thin and easily bent

So to bend it, I can just stick a screwdriver through the wheel and tap it with a hammer right? Or do I need to take the wheels off?

    Or completely remove it.
You can look in from the back of the wheel/tire and bend it back. Won't take but two fingers.

Hold the Line! If you are not holding the line, abandon your ship. Destruction is inevitable without more to hold the line!
How many miles on the original brakes before you had to replace them? I am still on factory pads and I keep wondering when I am going to hear the squeekers going off.

Did mine at 55k - previous owner towed a lot so they were pretty much gone in the back.

If you know which wheel it is coming from I would remove the wheel, turn the rotor, and see if it makes contact, or if the clearance is really tight in a certain area, if so, just use your hand to move it away from the rotor in that area. Then turn the rotor again and make sure there isn't any contact.

If once you pull the wheel you notice the dust shield is nowhere near the rotor, it could be something else.

I just replaced rotors and pads on front and rear and i have the same scraping noise at my rear right wheel. Only happens when turning corners harder/sharper than an easy corner. I removed the wheel and rotor and noticed it was scraping dust shield on the top and bottom. I will try to bend it slightly again to see if i can get it to stop. Didnt work the first try. Can anyone explain why the trac control light and possibly the abs kicks in during some of these sharper/harder corners? We live in the mountains and typically it is happening during a hard corner either going down hill or uphill. At first i figured it may be the rear bearing allowing the wheel to slightly move and come in contact with backing plate....i hope not! I just bought the truck 2 weeks ago!

Did you check to see if your calipers were sticking? I had to replace mine not long ago due to a scrape/squeal noise

I should be replacing brake pads and rotors on the wife's 2012 sequoia soon. Do you guys recommend OEM parts or just a set off Amazon to save a few bucks? IMG_0560.jpgHere's a pic of the vehicle just for reference

I got a set of brakemotive pads and rotors for all four corners off of eBay shipped for under $200. Before you bash me, I read a ton of reviews, all of which were positive. There was a guy on trailblazer forums that got like 80k out of the rotors. The pads are actually the evolution truck and tow ceramic pads. Rotors were quite a bit bigger than stock (width wise), and not cheap looking or feeling at all.

The set up has been great for 15k miles.

    650h1,

Your brake dust shield is rubbing on your new rotors. Yes that shiny thing in the picture is a dust shield but its not rubbing where you think. With rotor off (you probably didn't look because I didn't) there is a lip on the dust shield that matches the recess in your new rotors. Mine were Napa brand. I rebuilt the calipers (just because), rebuilt the whole assembly and installed steel lines last weekend. Took it for drive and wasn't impressed by the scrapping noise you describe.

I'm just letting mine eat a hole in the place its rubbing since grinding that lip is a lot more work then I wanted to do. Hopefully it clears up soon because nothing is a deflating as doing the brakes and having them sound worse then before you started.

Sorry I didn't take pictures (and you'll find neither did anybody else on the web) when I got home I researched the heck outta it.

(and just FYI the Toyota brand rotors I removed had evidence of rubbing on the dust shields from the factory).

at 15k miles I hope your noise is gone?

I'll do an introduction when I can. Thanks guys

The rotors and pads i installed were Napa brand. Since no one seems to be able to find a photo....i took some when i took a look a few weeks ago. Top photo is of the top and bottom photo is bottom of dust shield.

Yup, exactly like what mine looked like. I felt the fool after trying without luck to get the bigger dust shield pushed back. (every try pushing on a round piece, just moves one section out and another in). Thanks for the picture. I'm not sure what the easiest fix for this is?

I am no mechanic but that kind of wear makes me wonder just how straight is your rear axle?

LOL, I removed my spacer comment due to the stupidity of it. The beer made me post it!!

Please don't place small washers between your lug nut studs and the rotor. That will make the caliper off-center and possibly cause bigger issues.

Its a good thought but not something I'd try.

I read somewhere the axle moves in and out a bit. Which is why this rubs. (not sure I understand that logic).

I just replaced my rear brake pads and rotors and now have the same issue. I removed everything just to make sure that I installed everything correctly and I did. I backed off on the manual parking brake shoe adjuster and it is much better now. I did not see evidence of any rubbing action on the backing plates. I do not understand what is causing the issue. My truck also made the sound when making hard right turns.

The same thing happened on my 2008 when i first replaced the front rotors. Pretty sure it is the tight tolerances required between the rotor and the backing plates. The non-OEM rotors may have a mm or 2 more material on the back which causes the rubbing when cornering. i bent the backing plates slightly and don't hear the noise for the most part, except on more spirited turns. HTH.

I had the same thing happened.. I drove around for a week and took the wheel off and checked it twice.

Its the backing plate. You cannot see it or bend it with the rotors on. You need to remove the rotors. The backing plate is rubbing the corner of the ebrake drum.

Its less than 1/2 mm barely rubbing. I just took a large screw driver and hammer and tapped the area that I see the rubbing. Fixed.
