Agree, but when in the Toyota menu there’s a Nav button with a commercial for subscribing

CarPlay with Google Maps in satellite view is awesome. Toyota can shove their inferior nav service.

Is it possible to do this?..... hide the Toyota Nav App and use a map app from the phone?
Also, can Google Maps (or Waze) be linked and used WITHOUT opening Android Auto?
My biggest issue with moving to Android Auto is that it will consume your phone's data allocation. I subscribe to a service plan to save expense that includes only 5GB data. My data minutes is not unlimited.

No. Must link your phone, either Android or iPhone, to use 3rd party Apps. However, don’t worry about your data. I only have 5Gb and have never exceeded it. Even when I drive 1200 mi to CA running Waze and Pandora the entire way I still only use about 3Gb. *Google maps set to Satellite View does use more than any of the other 3 maps I use.

Toyota introduced a cheap sh!t box pickup truck in Asian market. You know, something disgustingly untruckish by modern standards. Like it's 1995. Apparently not that many dandies out there buying a self-propelling ass massaging computational cluster just to do truck work.

I recently hit this and having used Android Auto in other cars and was disgusted by it I didn't try it on the Tundra for a couple months after my trial year Toyota navigation ended and I have to say I love the interface way better with Android Auto then I ever did with the built in nav. Only downside is I need to unlock my phone after I turn on the car for Android Auto to link to the car. It's only mildly annoying and way worth it to not pay the stupid monthly fee for repackaged google maps and voice commands I hardly used anyway. I'm waiting for someone to hack the display, half tempted to do it myself.

I'd love if they put a built in app that was free or a nominal one time fee (say $20 or less) that could be used to display customizable engine and GPS sensor data on the main display. Similar to the Torque and an ODB II reader.

Not sure about Android but the iPhone version of Car Scanner shows live data thru Apple CarPlay, though only in text format. You can’t build gauge clusters like on the phone. Have discussed with the software team and Apple won’t allow gauges in CarPlay. Seems odd to me since they allow detailed maps

I meant have Toyota have a built in app outside of Car Play or Android Auto that is similar in function to Torque.

My biggest complaint before I figured out Android auto worked and looked so good on the screen in this truck was if you don't subscribe to the Toyota Navigation the giant showpiece screen is pretty fucking useless. I guess as a backup/PVM camera display it's useful. But now that I figured out Android Auto doesn't suck balls on it I'm content again.

I wonder if change could be brought about if everyone contacted their senators and representatives. I despise the federal government and hate to involve it in the market, but without some kind of power behind the pushback I don't see this changing.

If the hardware is in the car, and therefore in the price, then by hell it had better work. The prices are high enough to justify that. There's also questions in contract law that raise whether the turning off of a service on something you have already purchased is even legal, according to the article below.

    https://www.kiplinger.com/personal-finance/automakers-added-subscription-fees-raise-legal-questions

It pisses me off to know end that they want to dig deeper into my pocket for stuff I already paid for. Either let it work, or don't fucking charge me for it in the initial price. Don't install the GPS antenna, FOB antenna for remote start, etc. on any of them unless they are ordered with it, and knock all that money off the price of the vehicle. It's horseshit that they install the hardware, charge you for it, but then say you can't use it unless they get MORE.

Fuck BMW for coming up with this dogshit idea. Those fuckers can rot.

I agree with you, this is very abusive, seems like we have no rights anymore in this country, no one defends us.

They have remote control of every device on the CAN Buss. They could start charging us monthly for A/C, Heat, or Stereo. The whole “Services” model is ludicrous. If Toyota threw in even some of those services they’d have a huge leg up on the competition. I’ve heard GM charges $30/mo for their hands-free Super Cruise.

Then they need to quit charging for navigation and remote start in the MSRP. No double dipping.

Hey I don't like it either. Only the first year is included in the purchase price. In my older cars, nav is included but I still have to purchase a CD if I want updated maps. And for our BMW, the CD is costly.

The simplest way to solve this is to just get a new truck every year!

You should check out Visible for cell service: https://www.visible.com/plans
You can get unlimited talk/text/data with unlimited hotspot for $25/mo. I've been using them for a few years now and its been a good service.
