Based on the Photography BS thread, I know there's a bunch of folks here interested in photography whether it's as a hobby or a career. @4x4_Angel asked me if I would do a little education. I love to teach so this thread is the beginning of that. I want to keep this open and friendly. Egos and useless comments are not welcome. Constructive criticism is. This site is not Fred Miranda or 500px or any of the others. Tips, suggestions, advice from everyone is encouraged but if it starts sliding sideways, I'll get @Sean266 to put the hammer down.

So, a little background on me.

I started shooting 15 years ago. I turned it into a full time business a couple of years after that. I am completely self taught. My degrees are in computer science and biology. My studio focused on weddings and family portraits but I also did freelance work for Surfer and Surfing and worked through an agency for some commercial stuff. The surf photography was for fun and my creative outlet from doing weddings every weekend. The wedding/portrait work funded the surf work. I am currently exploring options for a new studio here in Denver that focuses more on high end portraits and commercial work.

My idea would be to write a lesson per week or so. Who's in?

I have some ideas. Let me know when you guys have time. Spots I want to go to for this are going to be shutting down in the next month or so then I'll have to find new ones. Doing some experiments this weekend. If they work, let's go.

Yes it will be but I probably won't be.

I can't tell you how many times I set up in the middle of our street for portraits. We might be able to pull something off. I'll think on it.

Yeah that'd be awesome. I took a course in college and know a minimal amount about what to do behind the glass. Wouldn't mind some editing info and I'm always open to learning more.
I've got some experience with macro stuff for dental photography but the army won't allow me to post photos if it's not in an army educational setting.

No sir, you would not. Everything will be done here and through PMs.
I wouldn't have expected anything less from you.

Coolest. That MKII is a great camera. I shoot with a pair of 1Ds MK IIIs and a 1DC. I used the original 5D for over 10 years. Had the shutter mechanisms in them replaced twice. Absolute work horses but eventually replaced them with the 1Ds pair.

I'll definitely go through some editing/workflow stuff. I had to get that really dialed.

Sure. Concepts are the same. The best camera is always the one you have with you and these days, what you have in your pocket is more camera than phone.

I like yours better than mineFB_IMG_1505369878311.jpg also with phone. For some reason, pictures of the horizon tend to come out blurry for me.

I got lucky.....there is sand in the air almost ALL the time there too.....so there is a natural "filter" in the air. I took the pic on Christmas day at a beach club. I was deployed....to the most cake place to be deployed to in the Middle East.

We'll get into some composition stuff. This is a good general rule to follow but, as with all rules, you need to know when to break them. :D

    Bummer

Nope. Sorry. No dark side people allowed. :D You may have to translate a little of what I explain into Nikon buttons. The only Nikon I have is a 40yr old 35mm film camera...

Working on writing up lesson uno.
