I bought a 2005 Tundra V8 4.7L double cab a few months ago. I did a timing belt replacement recently and found black, tar-like substance on the whole front of the engine.

Pulleys and belts were all clean but everything around it was black with thick goopy stuff. I tried to clean it off the best I could.

The cam covers were sealed thick with this stuff too. I checked the transmission fluid and coolant hoses for tight seals.

I'm at a loss of where to search for a leak. What do you think this stuff is???

Oil cooler? Currently swapping out my 3.4 and came across the oil cooler on mine which could've been the cause to a similar mess I had. Not sure if and where it is on the 4.7

    Just a possibility

I’m guessing either cam seals, crank seal, or both. Question is whether it was fixed already or not. Need to see behind timing covers, see how high up it goes to know which it may be.

What's up with that radiator fan shroud? Other than confirming that DCs really are just SUVs, why the big gap at the bottom? What's leaking? Your air flow through that radiator.

I have been under my Double Cab a lot the past few weeks, OP's fan shroud isn't snapped in like it should be. Shouldn't be a gap.

I actually think he's MISSING a piece that clips into the fan shroud.

but back to the topic. I'd recommend a stiff bristle plastic brush and some brakekleen. Or some Purple power. And clean that shit up. If there actually is a leak, it'll be 100x easier locating it with a clean surface as opposed to just guessing

Yeah... I didn't want to hear that answer @FishNinja. That is what's next for me...

RE: the fan shroud. Yall are correct - the clips are broken and I've ordered a new lower part.

I’d pull the timing covers and have a look. Also use some engine cleaner and clean the area around the front pulley, oil pan and oil cooler to see if you can tell where it’s accumulating. There is a figure 8 o-ring on the oil cooler that can leak and is easily replaced.

With oil right here, your oil cooler o-ring (90301-67004) and/or the oil filter bracket figure 8 o-ring (15692-50020) is definitely leaking. The fan can blow that oil all over and make it seem like something else is leaking.

Note all the oil behind the tensioner though. Between HB and alternator. It is wet. That stinks of bank 2 cam seal to me.

While that is likely, personally, I'd tackle the low hanging oil filter fruit first since a fresh leak can be seen. Then clean and reevaluate. The front of my motor looked similar when I bought the truck, and it was loosing a quart of oil out of both oil cooler o-rings every 100 miles, cam and crank seals were dry when I did the t-belt.
