I never bought a kit before, I know it's more economical than to build one.
I have two different friends that have bought the plastic ones and they are bullet proof, they are still standing and in good shape both are close to 10 YO.
These guys don't know each other and both don't know the difference between a Philip driver from a ballpine hammer, that's why they bought plastic, so just food for thought on the plastic, I'm sure there not made like they were in previous years...

Can confirm the plastic sheds are pretty damn durable. Mine is 8x8 and has been moved multiple times and now serves as a chicken coop.

It's about 15 years old at this point and still solid.

Bought an 8x7 plastic shed from Costco. Took me six hours to assemble, but I love it. Dad who happens to be a structural engineer helped me go overboard suggested that I reinforce it with simpson strong ties. Also weighed it down more with some 3/4" horse stall mats. It is solid!

I can now park 2 vehicles in the garage again.

Welp... I'm a BBQ'r/smoker... I keep my smokers on the outside of the garage wall on a wooden bench... Got done doing a cook and made sure everything was cool to the touch before putting it away... Wife comes screaming at me while sleeping around midnight... "FIRE...FIRE... FIRE... Run around the corner of the garage... I'll be damned if we didn't have a melt down...

    Here's results ...

    Before ...

The best I can figure... I remember dropping a couple of small lit briquettes under the table... At the time there was red mulch under the table... The mulch caught on fire after we went to bed...

Luckily the wife is a lite sleeper... She happened to wake up and see the brightness from the flames out the window...

Notice in the after pictures there is nothing flammable in the immediate area any more... Steel table and stone underneath ...

Fist, I am glad you all are ok and the house is standing. Secondly, what was your cleaning process on the house?

Reminds me of when we lived in Oregon and I built a nice fire in our fireplace. It cooked all day and the next day, in the afternoon, I shoveled the ashes into a metal bucket and placed them in the large metal dumpster in our apartment complex. The dumpster was 3/4 full of trash when I dumped the ashes. When I left to go to work early the next morning, the prior, pristine dumpster was charred on the outside and there was no trash in sight.

Officially in full-on laid-off mode now. Let the honey-do list begin! Finally get to kill tons of stuff that's been waiting too long to get done.

This was a fun one. Anyone know how to prevent floor duct boots from rusting out in a kitchen space like this? I replaced these today and it was a PITFA b/c for one, I barely had any space between a basement wall and the joist to work (as shown), and on the second one that needed doing, I had to cut my garage ceiling out (installed a nice USA-made Linhdor cam'd trapdoor to avoid doing drywall work). F'n hate drywall dust and screwing with insulation though.

Anyway, it's done, but I'm wondering how the hell I can avoid this shitjob in another 10-15-20 years. Before anyone asks: Yes, the registers get pulled and crud vacuumed out several times a year. EDIT: I just remembered... when I remodeled the kitchen in 2009, I totally failed to cover the f'n vents when we were doing drywall. I betcha anything these rusted out from the drywall dust sitting on the metal.

I could barely squeeze that new boot up in there, the gap was that tight, about 5"

Yeah it can really suck but.....
Where the boot hits a 90° or two of them follow that back to the next connection, most piping is 30 gage and 60" runs so you can measure back from the elbow(s) that's connected to the boot, once you measure squeeze on the insulation there should be just 3 ~ 1/4" or 3 ~ 5/16" zip screws hopefully there isn't any ductseal bit should be taped with cold weather tape usually metallic foil tape.
Ok so once you remove this you'll have all the access in the world to replace those boots, installing the new ones are/could be a PIA a whole lot easier with a extra set of hands if it's just you use tape from the top put your hand through it to the opposite opening and toenail the boot to he subflooring.

Sorry to hear about being laid off but yeah man take advantage of the down time and knock those projects out of the park!

Oh, I was already done with both when I posted. Didn’t mean to be confusing.

It was pretty easy, no way to install from the top, had to go from under. Pop and save the nails from the register end of boot, untape the insulation, cut the strap, untape the duct, cut the strap, install was reverse. Original installer used sealant tape which made for a fun time, and the ducting is all 6” or 8”, and registers 4x10 so that one tight space was a bitch, had to oval out the duct boot to get it to slip thru. I always do the worst one first, that way the rest is easy as hell in comparison.

My big thing was: How the hell do I keep the new ones from rusting out in-kind? Then I remembered, my dumbass failed to keep drywall dust from settling on them during remodel some 10-15 years ago and I bet that kicked off then accelerated the rusting. Dammit.

At some point I need to get into this same ceiling and figure out why the hell one of the vents in the basement isn’t blowing. I suspect the damn thing is kinked. It was just installed with the new 2-zone dampers when we overhauled the basement and replaced all our units. Can’t trust anyone to do anything right these days. Big reason I did this on my own. Dude who installed HVAC wanted “$350-450” to replace these 2 90° boots. Cost me about $65-75 (and $16 of that was shit I didn’t need) and about 2 hours of my time. And it’s done right, and nothing damaged, only improved. Same HVAC dude broke one of my attic ladder steps, and bent the hell out of my OEM skid plate (didn’t bother to tell me about the skid plate, couldn’t hide the ladder though). Ugh.

PS - one thing I wish I’d have known, the ducting slide on a hell of a lot easier if you cave in the seam where the boot comes together with a rivet (on the round end). Learned the hard way, the jag on the metal will grab the duct and rip it.

Went to Home Depot for a raised flower bed. Got this galvanized steel one for $160. Then plastidip sprayed the inside and exterior bottom to prevent rusting away.

(Edit: Drilled holes around the perimeter for drainage before spraying)

Filled it with four bags of potting soil and turned my girlfriend loose. All those succulents were in individual pots taking space in my patio.

Shouldn't it drain water also? I really don't know. I know some of these things have drains some don't.
