If you ONLY want to see codes, there are $30-40 code readers for that purpose. They may even be cheaper than that now. Some use BT and are tied to an app on your phone. Pretty handy.

 

Main reason I got the xtool was for the fuel reset. Those BT ones are very useful for the money.

 

I think I'm just looking for something to read the codes. I'm not a tech guy so I would be lost with that xtool.

Will this also tell you Temps? Like the transmission fluid temp?

 

You have to spend quite a bit more to get a reader to give you fluid temps. The cheapest way I've found is using the

$15 Veepeak Mini Bluetooth OBD II Scanner Auto Check Engine Light Code Reader Car OBD Diagnostic Scan Tool for Android (Incompatible with iOS)

Veepeak dongle ($14) and the Car Scanner ELM OBD2 app (free) available for your phone. Note that this is for Android only, but for a few bucks more you can get a Veepeak that speaks both Android and iOS and Car Scanner is also available for iOS. That will give you ATF, coolant, etc., temps all day long.
BTW, this will also allow you to read the DTC codes that the above reader will do.

Fairly certain the OBDII dongle and OBD Fusion app will read and erase codes.

Yes the fusion app does read and erase codes. Had to do it this past weekend on my daughters car, (she didn't put the gas cap on properly and threw some evap codes).

I was able to return the coil to O'Reilly. That got me the $105 back

 

Did you put some dielectric grease in the boots? That will help ensure good contact between coil pack and plug.

 

Regarding the transmission service, the truck itself will tell you when the temp is correct for the fluid check. Put it in trans temp check mode instead of using some other gauge or reader, literally what it was designed for. Lots of fans of this fella on here, I'd pay attention to him. Good luck! I actually think I used too much the first go round that's why the coil wasn't making contact or floating/running away.

 

I have that video saved and a couple others for when I'm ready to tackle the transmission.

 

I use one of these Mightyvac syringes for fluid extraction and filling. Mine is a 200ml size.

Just suck out the steering fluid, refill, and turn lock to lock about 10 times. Do this a few times and your fluid is gonna look really fresh.

I also use it to fill my front differential. Suck oil out of the just and shoot it into the diff.

 

Power steering maintenance went well. The Mityvac tool was easy to use. 2 things I wish I could change/do better next time: had a more narrow funnel, the one I had had too big of a mouth and I made a little mess. And wish the container for the Mityvac was larger.

Next on to the brake fluid and coolant...

 

Doing the brake fluid can be a little tricky. The proper way is to open the bleeder screws and each brake caliper and vacuum out the brake fluid and refill the reservoir. This can be a little tricky and you need to have a helper fo help to beed the braking system. Also if you're in the rust belt there is a good possibility the the bleader screws will be seized in the calipers and you could break them off trying to undo them. I suggest that you use your Mityvac to remove the brake fluid from the brake reservoir and refill with new dot 3 brake fluid. That way you don't have to mess with bleeding the brake system or opening up bleeder screws. Make sure your Mityvac vacuum pump is clean of oil. Any oil left in the hoses and contain can contaminate the brake fluid and even small traces will cause problems. Use brake cleaner to clean out you vacuum pump hoses before putting then in the brake reservoir.

 

When you do the coolant just drain the the radiator and fill back up with Toyota Super Long Life coolant. Don't mix with other coolants. Different coolants don't play well together. There is a drain at the bottom of the radiator you can get to without removing the skid pan. Use a hose over the bottom of the drain so that you can direct it into a container. Only open the drain about one full turn. You will need about a gallon of coolant.

 

Thank you for the advice much appreciated. I saw a couple YouTube videos that seem to make it look easier. I may just remove and fill the brake fluid. And wait to bleed when I upgrade my brake lines. I have a little road trip planned the first weekend in April so I would like to have the 100K maintenance done before I head out, but its not completely necessary if a couple things are left unfinished. I believe I could do the break fluid, coolant and front diff this week and tackle the transmission drain and fill next week.

The dirtiest fluid is in the brake lines, especially close to the calipers. I understand the risk with rusty calipers and bleed screws, but he could verify that before beginning.

 

That's all? I saw a copy videos where the drained the reservoir and took off the front wheels and did those drains as well. So all that may be unnecessary?
