Anyone replace the tpms with aftermarket units? Mine have stopped working, and Toyota wants more than $100 each.

Can't we just replace batteries in them?

A friend mentioned some aftermarket (bosch maybe?) that would work on toyota frequencies and costs a lot less than toyota.

I'd like to get working TPMS sensors again at some point as well.

    Batteries aren't replaceable.

Don't go with aftermarket. Too many horror stories on here about other people who did that and were fighting with occasional flashing TPMS light, and some opting to replace with Denso, so they paid as much as you would for OEM at the end of the day.

Go to www.densoautoparts.com and look up their sensor part number. Denso is manufacturing the sensors for Toyota. Should be around $35/wheel. Don't forget the spare.

You still need someone to program them in - i.e. replace the old wireless transmitter IDs in the TPMS ECU with the new IDs OR clone the old IDs to the new ones, I think is maybe an option? Special tool/scanner required for either.

This was my last order for (5) sensors via RockAuto. DO NOT BUY from scAmazon or fleaBay. Order from RockAuto or Summit Racing to ensure you get authentic product.

Oh snap! That is pretty cheap.

I see threads online on how to replace the batteries in TPMS sensors. Can post a link but unsure if that is against forum rules. Easily found though.

Yep. The OEM factory sensor I had my shop save for me to dissect, it would've required cutting, unsoldering, and soldering in a new battery. Then expoxying it all back together to seal it up. You've got to unmount the tire, then unbolt the sensor from the wheel to get to the battery, which is inside the wheel itself. That's a fuckload of work, and you better be sure the battery you get is long-life and not some Chinesium bullshit, which is going to cost you probably a few bucks for each tire. At the end of the day, I guess it boils down to:
    • Do you have the resources to unmount all the tires so you can remove the sensor and replace the battery?
    • Do you have the tools needed to properly replace the battery?
    • How much will the epoxy, batteries and other bullshit cost you?
    • What happenes if you damage the sensor while chipping out the battery?
    • What happens if you get it all together and you STILL have TPMS light, either because a solder joint or connection is bad, you reversed a battery or ???, and how much more time/money will it cost you to fix ... or what if the battery isn't the only issue?!
    • How much is your time truly worth, at the end of the day?
I'm sure most shops will charge you to reprogram also. We've clearly seen some shops absolutely cannot get the programming correct the first time also.

BE SURE TO TAKE PICTURES OF THE BOXES ON ARRIVAL SO YOU CAN DOCUMENT THE WIRELESS IDs OF YOUR SENSORS FOR FUTURE REFERENCE.

(Competent shops will give you the box tabs with the ID after, or some form of documentation)

EDIT: tl;dr - you do you, and use internet info to replace batteries if you like DIY adventure. I opted to just replace the sensors with my new wheels and tires. $250 later for parts and programming, I'm good to go for another 15-20 years.

I went Denso from rockauto - buy 5 of them to make the light go away. The spare needs one also

Having to pull a tire apart to f__k with a sensor in a week, or month or year pretty much says not worth trying to fix old sensors.

On the other hand a piece of black tape over the dash warning light is pretty cheap too. lol

It took only slightly more effort than using tape to simply clear the TPMS codes from the ECU, for me, and they never came back.

Maybe more in-depth details here: https://www.tundras.com/threads/wha...-gen-tundra-today.2558/page-1557#post-3103575

Tape is never the answer for any dash light. Clear the code or fix the core issue, to help avoid other issues later. How much is a good, quality tire these days, $250? $300? For a decent one at least. Should cost the same for TPMS overhaul, and if it saves you that single tire you missed being flat, and you ruined it, you're already ahead.

Just a quick follow up on my tpms issue. I went to a locally owned tire shop in my town (for warranty accountably). Replaced all five tpms units on my truck.
The brand used is Autel, had to return to the tire shop a day after installing and have them calibrated again and now they’re working perfectly with no warning lights . My truck had original tpms. I should add the Autel tpms were $50 each installed.
