    Well said. Without YouTube I'd be lost. I reference multiple videos of processes before anything I start working on anything I've never done. And buying the tool is waaaay cheaper than paying the man who already owns it. Appliances have been my last learning curve. This year alone I've had to repair parts on a fridge, washer, and oven. And YouTube helped me diagnose and repair them. No more $150 fees to the appliance repair tech for a diagnosis, then he wants another $400 to fix something that cost me $69.

    I'm sure y'all have heard of Chilton's? Those things used to be all there was for doing anything on a car. My dad bought my sister a '68 Cougar when we were teens, and he and I rebuilt the engine and fixed a ton of shit on that car, just from the book. It took hours of reading.

    YT is almost as good as the plugs the characters in The Matrix had plugged into the backs of their heads to teach them shit.

    Luckily for me my dad was around. He worked long hours (owned his insurance agency), but he was home on the weekend and we would go dirt bike riding. So, when I started racing in my young teens, it was up to me to get the bike ready. This is where I learned how to wrench and rebuild. Also lucky for me high schools back then still had industrial ed departments. I took 4 years of welding, wood shop, and auto shop.
    By that time I had completely caught the DIY bug and would consume any type of media about anything repair/fix-up/mechanical. This was pre YouTube, so think This Old House, magazines, and Power Block TV. To this day my wife says "I will never question a tool purchase, just get what you want or need. I know what you can do with them".

    Now that I'm thinking about it - - dad bought that Cougar in '83, so it was 15 years old (I was a '67 model, so I was 16). It seemed very old at the time. I feel like it wasn't that long ago I bought my '06 Tundra, but it was 18 years ago. smh.

    I know budgets are tight, but they really need to bring them back, very valuable in more ways than people would imagine. I took GATE classes (I think those are now called AP) and finished my required classes early, so my senior year was:

    Welding
    Welding teachers assistant
    Auto Shop
    Auto Shop teachers assistant.

    Both taught by the same teacher in 2 classes next door to each other. He would let us assistants park behind the shop and run out if we wanted, at time having us pick up something for him while we were out.
    Those days are gone now. Shops converted and the school surrounded by a fence. :(
