My wife checked one out wile we were shopping for my Tundra. She currently drives a Camry XSE that she has said she loves and wants nothing else, but said the new Crown may change that.

It’s been out for a while now. Looks sharp. But I think all the Toyotas do.

I like where they are going with it. It's a bit of a blend of a CUV and a sedan for the styling/capability. It's definitely targeted as a jack of all trades kind of thing. Not quite a full on bulky SUV/CUV but also not as low and small feeling as a car was the aim. That's what I read, but I cannot for the life of me remember the article. I want to say it was an interview with a Toyota designer/higher up in something like Car and Driver.

I don't know anything about it's powertrain, though.

They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder. . But I think they're hideous. . Nowhere near as good looking as the camry.

Definitely a different style, but I don't think it's ugly at all. I kinda like it. It's not replacing the camry, so I don't really compare the two.

My wife’s Camry averages 38mpg! It blows me away whenever I see the average stat on her car.

I hope Toyota keeps up the good stuff. They seem to read their buyers well by offering things from factory that people like to usually do aftermarket. Lift kits, exhaust, cold air intake etc. I think it’s smart.

Hand calc 47.27 mpg. We have a Highlander hybrid as well 36ish mpg but I don’t drive it enough to calculate it.

Interesting in that it is an AWD as the only option. 2.5L hybrid 4cyl w/CVT on the base and limited (236HP), platimun gets 2.4Turbo hybrid 4cyl w/6sp auto (340HP). Clear winner in that. But its also an 8K jump to get into a plat over a limited, and 13K over a base.

I figured they would offer a FWD model for the base, adding the AWD as an option.

The black surround in that image does make the grille look huge. Doesn't bother me though. I don't hate the looks of the 3rd gen tundra either. Well, except the lights with the mini grilles right under/in them. I don't like that at all.

I would like to see some kind of bumper to help keep damages down. Just a little tap and you need a bunch of work done.

Safety regs have killed that function of a bumper. It's all about crumpling to absorb energy now. True, that preserves the passengers and makes vehicles safer, but it also drastically increases the damage from impacts.

Definitely not a car for me but I get what they were going for. Salesman friend told me older folks were saying the Avalon and Camry were too low to the ground for them to get in and out of. So Toyota came up with a middle ground between car and suv but made it fancy like the Avalon to attract that crowd. I guess Toyota actually does listen to its customers after all

    Nothing.
When I was buying my truck, the dealership had one in the showroom. I thought it looked amazing, with beautiful lines, proportional sized wheels, and a killer interior, however, the front seats felt "squeezed" between the door panels and the center console. Maybe if you are under 6 foot and 200 lbs. it would be okay but not quite comfortable for me and almost felt claustrophobic.

I have been in the crown and it was comfortable, and yes the Camry is low to the ground. I’ve been looking as I’m going to replace the wife’s Car in the next year. No idea what to get.

I get this totally. I had a loaner Altima for a day. I felt so uncomfortable stepping down to get in. Weird feeling driving it around. Truck guy. Ha!

I have a coworker who's wife worked for NA Nissan for over twenty years. He just got her a new AWD Pathfinder. Freaking nice. I like the Highlander a lot. I recently got a ride in a new Ridgeline. Not bad at all.

I test drove both a Crown Platinum and a Crown Signia XLE yesterday along with a new Land Cruiser 1958.

The hybrid max Crown Platinum was a pretty nice car, as was the Crown Signia. In fact interiors appeared to be identical up front, same seats, dash etc. Both Japanese built and you could tell, a cut above US made Toyotas I have been in (looking at you Tundra/Sequoia). If I were buying one the Crown Platinum would get the nod solely on the Hybrid Max and 6 speed, vs the god awful 2.5L turd lump hybrid CVT bullshit in the Crown Signia.

Why Toyota isn’t sticking the T24A-FTS Hybrid Max in everything that it will fit in is criminal, very impressive power and efficiency for what it is. Should be optional in every model that can fit it under the hood.

The 2.5L naturally aspirated hybrid with the CVT is dogshit in comparison. Droning and rattly, barely adequate power for my tastes. My wife said it sounded weird and stupid to have it droning away under acceleration. I couldn’t agree more. Such a shame because the Hybrid Max would really make for a compelling station wagon in the Crown Signia.

Both Crowns were quiet, very soft riding, and comfortable. They make no effort to be sporty, at least none that I could discern. That’s fine for most and the strong performance of the Crown Platinum makes for a great highway cruiser with plenty of passing power. Just don’t expect a canyon carving sports sedan, it wants to understeer when pushed hard in a corner. This is what traditional luxury cars used to provide: comfort, comfort, some more comfort, decent to ample space, and more than enough power to be effortless.

Our favorite though was the new Land Cruiser even though it was the bare bones 1958 with cloth seats, a small screen, and very utilitarian interior trim. Too bad it wasn’t for sale, just there as a test drive unit on loan from Toyota. I can give more details in the Land Cruiser thread so I don’t clutter this one up.
