I push the overhead switch for the rear window up to open and pull it down to close. Intuition wants me to push up to raise the window and pull the switch down to lower the window. I assume it is designed by an electrical engineer using 1s and 0s with rules that do not allow him to deviate. If the switch operation was reversed, I would not have to give as much thought to open and close the window. Just an observation. Maybe someone has better reasoning why it is this way.

Imagine that it's a window switch on your arm rest. You pull it up to raise the window, and push it down to lower it. Now, it's been placed on the ceiling, but it still functions the same way.

I don't know, that logic is not working for me. The difference is that the switch is inverted and now I have to think about it. I'd like to just reach up, pull it down, and the window goes down.

You're not the first person who find the back window switch weird. Toyota really confused people moving it from the dash to overhead console. But the switch works same way. It's really how you interpret it. You're pushing the switch in to pull window down. And pulling switch out to pull window up. Just like the window switches on your door panels, just mounted up side down.

I'm curious now though if you can remove the wiring harness connector on the overhead console switch and then depinning the connector and swapping it. Basically swap terminal pin 21 and 22. Or taking the connector off at the motor and swapping pins there.

    Connector on overhead console switch.

Pull it out and turn it around, but then the words will be inverted.

Yes, I had the same thought. Just pop out the switch and switch the wires.

It is not ruining my day and I accept the way it is. As an ME I like giving the EEs a hard time when I can.

I do like the new location , I never liked it down by the knees behind the wheel

I wish Toyota would just stop using that location for anything ,just put all switches up where you can see them

Well, that's the logic that was used in its design. Adapt or rewire. Your call.

Mine always confused the heck out of me at first.... especially since the switch is on the dash and the window slides back and forth instead of up and down.

I mean it is different but is it really that hard to realize after you push it the wrong way to push push it the right way? I’m confused why to go through all the trouble of trying to switch it or reprogram your brain if you can just realize the wrong way and do it the proper way.

plus if you switch it around than the button you use to push the window down or pull it up with will be wrong. Surely if this is an issue than the button not showing the correct orientation anymore would drive you mad too

Yep, this is just one of the nuances I have to adapt to with this new truck and first Toyota. Maybe later after I get some confidence to open the overhead console I can consider to switch the wires since I learn here that solution is available.

I feel so bad for you Gen 3 guys..
    Everything is a struggle...:(

Just adapt and let muscle memory take over.
You should be reaching up and using the switch without looking at it..

Kinda like putting your foot on the brake to stop, or putting your foot on the accelerator to GO...

I don’t know about the last part. We are all going to succumb to engine failure at some point. We won’t have to worry about stopping when the truck is in the shop for months being rebuilt hahah

Wouldn’t it be great if the rear window switch was right near all the other window switches?

    Seems logical to me….

I like the idea of switching the pins at the switch.

I shouldn't have to make my brain do illogical things to adapt to a poor design. Switch down should equal window down. Switch up, window up... It's common sense.

Can I adapt to it? Absolutely

But I would rather correct the issue.

I think we all agreed on this last year that the Engineer who did this no longer works for Toyota. There was no reasonable reason for designing it that way. Matching door window switches doesn’t make sense because this switch is upside down. Toyota couldn’t have done any sizable consumer review during the testing of the prototype vehicles.

For now, the fine print on the switch helps me to keep it sorted.... "Push to Open"

Yup. I can’t see that when driving so theres a second or two delay, 8 mos now, when I have to think “Oh Ya, Up is Down and Down is Up” and then act accordingly - LOL (listen to us while other truck owners grumble they can’t even move their rear windows remotely)

LMAO. Like I said earlier though.... it gets even more confusing when your rear window doesn't go up and down, but rather slides left and right.

After 12 years of owning the truck I'm finally used to it. LOL

Geez… this isn’t very hard guys.. it literally says right on the switch PUSH OPEN. It’s exactly like the other 4 windows. Push to open window pull to close window…
