Please tell me mileage improves

Winter blend, colder temps, 3" lift, larger tires. Your mileage does seem slightly low but that lift and 4 corner weight/height increase has rendered OEM aero useless.

 

The problem is misunderstanding the impact your larger tires and a 3" lift have on fuel economy. The TTv6 trucks make up their fuel economy when cruising on the highway or under very light acceleration. The key is staying out of BOOST. With your lift and tires, you have dramatically changed the aerodynamic profile of your truck for the worse (it was not good to begin with; it's a truck!) and added unsprung weight with the larger tires. Your truck basically can't stay out of boost.

The good news is, you can remove the lift and slap your factory tires back on and get much closer to your expectations.

 

Of course. I'm not a rookie at this. This vehicle, and the many before it spend a lot of it's life in very rough country hunting close to 100 days a year. It's not for looks. This is also the fourth lifted vehicle I've owned, lifting from stock, all with 33-35" tires and D or E ratings. I've never lost more than 2-3mpg, and that's what I was expecting here.

 

Why does eco mode render my post pointless? FYI, my Drive Pulse says "excellent".

 

My 2019 Tundra with a lift and 34s gets around 11-13mpg. My 2024 Tundra with a lift and 35s gets around 15-18mpg. My 2009 Prius with no lift and stock tires gets around 50-55mpg.

 

OK, Internet tough guy. If you actually read through the post, you will see that multiple times I stated that I very much understand the penalty that a lift and larger/heavier tires presents. I knew very well prior to purchase that this is not an economy car. My surprise simply comes in quantified form. I was expecting a loss of 2 to 3 miles per gallon. In my experience, when going with a lift and tires of this size, that kind of mpg loss is about what you get. Instead, I’ve lost 6 to 7 MPG, which seems excessive. Hence my question.

This is not a post about bashing the Tundra mileage in stock form. It’s not about asking why my mileage went down after bigger tires. It’s about it going down SO MUCH.

When others here are reporting a similar lift, and even bigger tires with much better mileage than me, and my “excellent” Drive Pulse habits, it makes me wonder…

 

this is interesting! And may explain some of my results. Is there any literature out there supporting your findings that the Eco mode is actually detrimental to mileage while driving around town? I would like to learn more about this. The owners manual is not helpful and does not explain how the Eco mode works.

 

Ok, but he is leveled, not lifted 3 inches. So if leveled D load gets what you want, then you can't expect it with a lift that is beyond the point of being leveled.

To your other questions, yes the mileage will improve as the truck breaks in. How many miles are on your truck? Another question, are you adjusting the mileage calculation for the larger diameter tire? If not, you are getting better MPG than the dash says.

 

Yea eco mode sucks for city driving. I usually keep it in normal or sport. I did try tow+ mode recently and it was crazy the difference it makes. At the end of the day though it’s a truck. I had a Tacoma trd pro with 32” tires (no lift other than the factory fox shocks) and could hardly get 17 mpg on the highway. City was 14-15 if I was lucky. I also don’t drive slow though and cruise usually around 75 on the highway. So I knew mileage would tank. These trucks really hate going over 70 mph. But I have been able to do so far in my tundra according to the computer is 16 mpg but majority of that is going around town. Small down with one lane roads and you are usually cutting through neighborhoods to avoid traffic. So I am not expecting the best mileage ever. It sucks but driving a vehicle that is 6000+ pounds and then lift and tires will really take a toll on it. Hopefully in a few thousand miles you see improvements. But with how much these trucks cost now, anyone buying should certainly have enough money for gas.

OP is just paying the mileage tax for his cosmetic upgrades. Slap some heavy duty skid plates on her for some real MPG change. Just make sure to never get them dirty or scratched.

Seriously though the thing with turbo motors is by adding so much weight and resistance, you are now using boost more which drives down the MPG. In the Ford world it is Eco or Boost your choice.

Did you test it stock for mpg before lifting it and adding heavy big tires?

Edit: It could be worse. You could of lifted and put big heavy tires on the a V-8 Tundra that have 4.3 gear ratio.

I dont know why OP is surprised. Take your bike. Swap out the adult wheels for smaller wheels and see how much easier it is to pedal. Taller tires are hell on mechanical advantage. The computer in the truck is perpetually confused because the load its sensing at all speeds is completely unexpected

 

I can't speak to your driving habits, terrain, or traffic conditions, but my '24 non-HV gets just over 16 mpg (average) with about 50-50 mix of local road and freeway driving (freeways are mildly congested). I drive pretty conservatively: accelerate slowly and coast to red lights. Have 1,000 miles on the ODO. I cannot account for the people who claim to get mileage in the high teens unless it's all freeway miles or the fuel they're using is significantly better quality that what I have available. However, I am surprised your mileage is that bad with such a mild tire upgrade and lift.

 

I read and understand what you’re saying. Some guys are really desperate to feel smart, yet struggle to comprehend what they’re responding to. It’s kind of a chicken or egg thing.

 

Once over 65, milage takes a nose dive. More air under your truck with the levelling , add in the tires.....you just erased 5 MPG minimum

 

I guess I got a lemon... I get 15.7mpg mixed about 50/50 City and highway. Nowhere near Toyota's mpg claims. Completely stock as of yet. Feels like I'll be in the single digit MPGs after the lift goes on next week.

Either I got a bad truck, it some of y'all are BSing about what has mileage you're getting.

This is closer to the gas mileage I was getting on my f150 Ecoboost with 35s that I traded in.

Low mpg, awful acceleration hesitation at stop and go situations, and squealing brakes on a truck that is not even 2 months old are not really what I was expecting to be the things that stuck out to me in the first couple months of ownership.

I go in for the neutral recall tomorrow, hopefully the new transmission calibration reduces the dead pedal hesitation in acceleration.

You don't need literature when you can easily test this out for yourself. Put in normal mode and go.

When I got slightly larger tires than stock and a two inch lift, I used two different GPS units to test my odometer reading. I was off by 5% - when my GPS units read 105 miles, my tripmeter read 100.

 

Unfortunately I didn't have 3.73s on mine or I'd have gotten 17 as well I'm sure.

Is there a way to calibrate your tire size on the Tundra like you could with Forscan?

 

I obsessed over mpg when I first got mine but now I just ignore it. Ammo is a much bigger waste of money but we all justify it. Beer too.

 

Same, I get about 8 MPG when I tow. Once you do a couple 100 mile trips like that you get used to the sting at the pump.

No mention at all about this in the OP, which is another factor of this question being worthless.

Also, OP mentions “excellent” on their Pulse Driving Info but I never mentioned anything about that grading. I specifically said hard braking and fast acceleration which has a big impact on MPGs. Staying in motion is much easier than increasing speed especially from a stop.

 

My mpg tops out between 65 & 70mph. (best is between 60-65) Anything higher and it’s downhill from there. As Ryan said, I’ve just passed 10K mi. and have picked up 1 more mpg.

 

I know, it almost became a challenge every where I went. LOL .
