Fit and finish assembly on ‘24 Tundra

Yeah... Sometimes even though dealer mechanics want to be helpful and attempt at fixing things, they may not have a fix or not capable to fix certain things. All of these mis aligned body panels looks to be a manufacturer defect and I doubt they can fix something like this at a service dept, nor you want them to try

It’s true about the jap cars being better, my $30k Subaru wrx with 105k miles has a more solid feeling fit and finish to the interior…my tundra isn’t bad…but the Subaru is better.

 

I have some misalignments inside and outside on my pre-COVID truck, which is after like 600+k gen 2.5 trucks they've built. I took it as granted, because it's

- Toyota, not Volvo
- work truck, not a luxury car
- Toyota discounted it and financed everything at 0% APR, apparently to have it leave the lot, so I literally left not a dime at the dealership

So far it's been a great reliable truck I've got new and cheap.

Wife's 22 Sequoia TRD PRO has no QC issues, all the gaps are Lexus-grade

 

I look at panel gaps before I sign. I look ay everything. I press every button during the test drive. My money the salesman is on my schedule

The dealer wants to send my truck to Line-X to re-spray the bed. They claim Line-X will need to scuff up the entire bed in order to re-spray it. Not sure why they even stripped it off in the first place, it didn’t fix anything.

Right…and you think you got problems now. Your problems with GMC would be under the hood. And trust me things would still be “bent” they would just be your push rods.

 

I totally agree, that’s why I go with Toyota time and time again. I just would like to use my tailgate and not be without a truck. Every time I’ve picked it up from service I had to detail the inside, it’s unprofessional. Bummer on a $65k truck that I have to do that. We had Santa Ana winds the other day and the doors and winds were left open all day. First world problems I know, but I paid first world money.

 

Try to go to a different dealer and see if they can figure it out. But if not and you dislike the truck still, trade it in and get something new. Stress is not worth it and at the end of the day make yourself happy. The problem sucks for sure but driving yourself insane and dealing with dealership is just not worth the cost. Trucks are expensive and you want the best, but if you think you will like a different truck better, toss the keys to a dealer and move into something new. Might take a loss but that’s a small cost to be happy.

 

You’re right SM, definitely not worth the stress. Unfortunately, I feel that I’m at the best service center around. I just get the impression that because it’s a warranty issue, there’s not much money to be made and the level of enthusiasm to remedy this issue is low. I will persist and stay positive and give them ample opportunity to fix it and make it right and keep bringing it back if it’s not. All I can do.

 

Love Carlsbad area and like the Toyota dealer there too but trick is to buy a truck from them without the KARR bs ever being assembled ...spec your truck and when comes in from rail, Carlsbad Toyota will sell it to you without add-ons but you have to let them know beforehand. Their service department has always been decent in my experiences. Enjoy your ocean views and knock-out pizza if still there

 

For what it's worth, after reading this entire string I went and checked all of the body alignment points pictured above on my own truck (2024 Tundra Limited purchased in February) and found none of those issues. I am sorry for what you are going through and strongly agree with the previous comments about pushing the dealer/Toyota to make it.

 

We have basically the same truck, I just have a different color. I don't have any of the panel issues you have. Plus, I checked my bed and my son's bed, our bed bolts were sprayed with bed liner material while yours were left as bare metal. Definitely weird to have yours done differently. Sorry you're going through it, maybe a Friday afternoon build?

 

Fuck that.. I’d be getting another brand new truck. I would not accept that. I’m sure that dealer can get you the exact same truck but without all this issues. As for the bed bolt, I wouldn’t worry about the liner on them. I cut it off my bed bolts to install tie downs under them. The bolts are galvanized anyway.

 

I don't think it's a problem one way or the other. I just found it odd that my son and I's trucks both have our bolts sprayed and the OP's truck has bare bolts. That's a lack of build consistency and QC, which could explain some problems overall.

 

I think they cut the liner off his bolts to attempt to adjust the bed.

 

His bed bolts were sprayed over too. It’s only bare now because they had to cut off the bedliner material over the bolts to remove the bolts.

Also, it’s not about the bed bolts rusting, the issue is there’s a giant hole under the bed bolts and now water can get in between the bed and the bedliner.

The proper way would be to remove the bolts when the bedliner is applied. But for some odd reason they don’t do that with the port installed bedliner.

Yes, the service center did remove the coating from the bolts and adjusted the bed but it not resolve anything. Even though I had a conversation with the shop foreman about leaving the bed alone, at least until he could figure out the issue with the tailgate. The tailgate stuck on me today while parked on level ground, so that is still an issue. They stated on my paperwork that the tailgate gaps are consistent with other trucks on the lot. This is going to be a long process, haha.

 

I’ll be taking my Limited in for this….. surprised this made it thru Toyota assembly and inspection. I spent 35+ in automotive industry, and as a supplier to Toyota. This delta is unsatisfactory. And I missed it upon delivery.

 

We test drove a 2024 Limited and it had a rattle in the dash, rattle in the passenger side window. Toyota has a long history of being the best when it comes quality control and resale. I hope they get it figured out. 3 years into a new model and still some lingering problems.

I guess if your rear bumper is off by my 5 mm but you get 200k trouble free miles most people will take that.

 

I picked up my 24 Tundra Limited Crewmax 2 weeks ago, and like I do when I pick up a new vehicle I do a walk around looking for scratches, paint flaws and other quick glance cosmetic things. Saw a couple paint flaws that were documented by the dealer to be taken care of at a later time. Earlier this week I spent some time washing and detailing the truck and started to notice gaps between panels, loose or misfitting rubber seals, front doors not lining up with back doors, etc, etc. Not as bad as what the OP documented, but still unacceptable. Took it on it’s first small road trip of about 150 miles each way, and that’s when the noise from the driver’s side window started driving me crazy. Upon closer inspection of the rubber seals and trim I found large gaps and loose fitting seals. When a car comes along side me or when I am going down the freeway it sounds like something is open. Called the dealer to make an appointment to have this all documented, and spoke to my salesman about the issues. The dealerships response was an offer to buy it back for $5,000 less than I paid for it sight unseen, and that’s not counting the hard tonneau cover and running boards I added. I wonder if that means they know there are issues without even seeing my truck. I know, some of you will say I should have looked closer when I picked it up, or noticed some of this on my test drive. I don’t want to hear it. On my two 10 minute test drives I was focused on how it drove, the power, the comfort of the interior, and ride. The test drives were on roads I rarely travel, not the types of roads I take on our road trips. That type of a test drive was not an option. As far as my inspection upon delivery, I guess I should have looked closer, but I have owned numerous Toyotas before and they were well built so I didn’t think I would have to look for things like that, although my previous Toyotas were all built in Japan. This may be my last Toyota if this is what they are becoming.

 

It's very possible that the dealer may not be able to fix the wind noise issues. Many people are having issues with the seals and it took me 4 replacements of the window runner to get it fixed to 70%...

If I had an option of getting rid of my truck and only loosing 5k, I'd gladly do it

 

Thanks for the input. That is what I am leaning towards, but $5000 for less than 900 miles is tough to swallow. The problem then is what to get in place of it.

 

Negotiate with the dealer, your truck is almost brand new anyway, and they will still make profit on it when they resell it.

Tell them that they can have truck back for $1k less, and then you'll buy another new truck from them.

This time... Of course, test drive test drive test drive.. And listen for any noises closely.

I test drove 23 platinum half year ago thinking of trading in my noisy 22, and the new 23 was very very quiet on the highway at 85+ mph.

Some tundras are still noisy, even in 2024... While lots of 2023s were already built to be quiet.

You can also have the dealer replace the window rubber runner to see if it'll magically fix the noise issues... It's a quick job for the. Who knows. Maybe it'll get fixed as it's a 2024. I don't think I heard anyone get it fixed 100% yet though.

Read through the long Wind noise concern thread how to diagnose and lots of info on noises... No solutions though unfortunately

 

I have an appointment with the sales and service manager tomorrow to go over my problems. I don’t see them negotiating much, but I am going to give it a shot. The problem is when I bought my truck they had 3 Tundras. Now their lot is loaded with them, including 3 trucks identical to mine. I plan on spending a lot of time there looking over all the Tundras they have to compare the quality to mine.

I read through a lot of different wind noise posts, and you are right, no one seems to have had a good permanent fix for this problem. Based on the huge gaps, the uneven fit, and the poor overall quality of the rubber seals around the window and doors it is obvious to me that is where the wind noise is coming from.

Thanks for your input. I feel really bad for the OP because his truck seems much worse than mine. Hopefully between the dealer and Toyota they take care of him. He definitely should be given a new truck in place of his.

 

Damn, sorry to hear that. I have the exact same truck with no tailgate issues. What a bummer.

 

Document, Document Document everything said, done and when. Check your states Lemon Law requirements

 

I also have a '24 bought a month ago and just noticed my tailgate is misaligned. Similar to the OP, the right side is definitely closer to the tail light, also to the point it started taking the paint off the bottom edge of the tailgate panel where it faces the tail light. I didn't notice it right away since the truck is black and the gaps sorta blend in. I have an appointment next week to take it in and hopefully have them fix it.

 

I don't think you can lemon wind noise issue, truck is still drivable and is considered a minor inconvenience aka Tundra model characteristic
