Adaptive Cruise took costly to use?

I refuse to use adaptive cruise......unless I am in a wide open space with very little traffic and want to watch my speed. I tried it for a bit in the DC / MD / VA area and it was way too touch and go. If someone cut in front (and many would go around because of the gap it keeps from the car in front of you), it would slow down very quickly and cause people behind me to get pissed and go around and repeat the process all over again. It just doesn't work well in congested areas in my opinion

 

Wonder what the average brake life is for gen 3s? I got almost 100k on my 2011 Tacoma before I had to replace the front brakes. Much lighter truck so I don't expect that with the tundra but am curious what others are getting.

 

Sounds exactly like what I would have expected it to do. IMO no cruise is safe for use on mountain roads and when passing semi trucks. Emergency situations can pop up way to fast. I want to already be in control when a situation arises on a mountain road. Rocks off the hill or in the road, truck sways into my lane, head on vehicle issue, broken down vehicles, blown tires, retreads, animals, etc.

A couple people mention warped rotors at 20-25 k. Not sure that's a large enough sample size to be statistically relevant.

 

Same approx mileage in other threads about worn brakes and warped rotors by 20K. Some however claim not to use Adaptive cruise so cause is widespread.

 

I've found that combining adaptive cruise control with eco mode significantly softens the acceleration and braking, making the drive smoother. In turn, this may help extend the brakes.

If they using adaptive cruise in the mountains or heavy traffic, then I can believe it completely.

 

Love it, use it all the time, 34K on the truck and brakes are still good. It can be weirdly aggressive in some situations but for me anything over mph and 10 miles gets adaptive cruise. Now my wife’s Masada CX9 has even some stranger things going on with it, but my Mustang GT’s adaptive is the best of all of them. Couple things, I never use it on twisty roads at higher speeds or in the rain….gets too strange for me

 

something nice about sitting in the slow lane, watching the cars go by. See lots of neat vehicles, trailers, bikes ect passing by and people are generally more chill in the rh lane.

I frequently do this. I find a semi that's not governed too low and set the adaptive up behind him. Cruise 65-72 without passing much of anybody. Low stress, no rush, and better fuel economy at 65 than the 80 MPH speed limits.

All it takes is planning and leaving early and not being in a rush. I quite enjoy those drives.

 

Some off the best mileage I ever had in the 16’ Taco (though it wasn’t radar cruise) avg 25mpg over 800 miles. And when raining, stay in their trailer tires trough but plenty far back for safety. You can pick up 1 to 2 mpg by not pushing water.

 

I fell in love with adaptive cruise on my Acura. Worked great in heavy traffic, could even come to a full stop then start moving again with the press of a button on the wheel.
Toyota’s implementation is much worse. Too aggressive, lane centering can’t keep the truck centered in the lane, and the forced preset follow distance is just annoying because it’s the wrong distance. People just keep cutting in front of you, which makes you brake, which starts a viscous cycle of people cutting in front of you. That being said, I absolutely still use it for safety. Human reaction times are not faster than the computer. It likely saved me from a wreck today, and no I was not driving distracted.

 

I hope I'm impressed with mine when I get a chance to try it.

I know the Tundra isn't an auto drive Tesla, but have a hard time putting that much faith in technology. I think I'm only gonna use it on sparsely populated xways.

 

you can adjust the follow distance on the fly and also adjust the lane center sensitivity

 

Wife's 2016 Volvo was super nice. It felt like it "saw" much more of the road and was sort of predicting of what cars around will be doing next. Acceleration was quick, but not aggressive. Braking was not aggressive at all, and well planned. It could stop completely and accelerate on its own, making it super nice for stop and go traffic.

 

I use cruise all the time. I set the adaptive to bare minimum, it’s right on the steering wheel, merge a little early into passing lane so it won’t brake, always cancel it in down hills then resume it on flats. Get my best mileage on cruise. As for LTA, I hate it and never use it

 

My 23 does LTA at night almost flawlessly. Ping pongs during the daylight. Try it out

I had 1 rotor warp around 16k miles. Dealer replaced both fronts under "good faith".

As for the Adaptive Cruise, I use it on wide open highway and love it. I generally run it about 22 miles on my commute to and from work daily.

I've got about 37k miles on my trucks and minus that one rotor issue, brakes are a 6/10 as of yesterday, can't say the same for the tires.

 

Which explains all the erratic driving behavior I see on the highways these days. It's not the drivers themselves, it's the drivers allowing a toaster to drive.

Breaking hard for no obvious reason, flooring to accelerate. Hanging way back from the vehicle ahead while in the passing lane. Heck, before I bought my current truck that has adaptive cruise I just figured folks had forgotten how to drive.

 

We flew into Grand Cayman on Monday right when the Norwester was in full swing that broke 35 year old records. Pilot and crew were outstanding and told the first office as we passed the cockpit on arrival what a great flight.

We will see this thread resurrected once adaptive cruise becomes subscription based, sort of like that stupid GM super cruise

 

I too had warped my front rotors under 20K miles due to the adaptive radar cruise control. It happened again around 50k. My local Toyota dealership couldn't do squat for me in terms of warranty. The first time around I paid for new OEM rotors. The second time round I got smart and bought premium dimpled and slotted rotors w/ceramic brake pads and had my non-dealership shop install them for me. So far problem seems to be solved. These rotors are warrantied for warping and cracking.

Quite frankly, I'm not impressed with Toyota on a few nuances with my 2022 Tundra. I don't consider these things major design flaws, instead they are common sense items. This is what happens when you give software engineers too much authority to make decisions.

Drivers should supervise software engineers and not another software engineer. A driver will visualize 2 choices in how to do something, a and b, but a software engineer will come up with c, d, and e while never considering a or b. That’s why adaptive cruise control brakes when the car in front of you moves into the left lane to turn left, acknowledging an sensor is not available is only good for 15 seconds or so, and the head unit keeps prompting for a pin even though you entered it 2 hours ago.

 

Curious if you went semi-metallic or ceramic pads ?

 

Ceramic. I don't like the metallic pads because they leave a sh*t ton of break dust on the rims.

 

Was surprised no up charge for ceramic and they had the semi-metallic listed as premium. Squeaks would be my main concern, are rotors and pads holding up better than OEM so far ?
