Hi folks, the plastic trim piece on the front bumper has faded terribly. Is it possible to remove the trim in order to restore the black color? If not, I can tape around it but if removal wasn't too difficult, I would do that.

By the way, looking for a long term solution...heard good things about Rustoleum's trim and bumper black paint. But open to anyone's experience with other products.

    Thanks

Sure, here's a pic...the black part. Sure, I can use Maguire's or similar every few months but looking for a longer term solution. Figured it would be easiest to remove to paint...but maybe not?

I am constantly plugging Griot's Trim Restore on here. Many of us have used it with great results. I applied 3 coats to various things, and there's pics here on the forum somewhere for before/after, and it did well. I reapplied after a period of time and I touch up once a year, and that's it. I tried at least 4 other products prior to this on different areas of the truck (to objectively avoid mixing products).

Big thing to realize is this: None of that plastic is/was black from the factory. I ordered brand new mudflaps for my truck, and I assure you, they're a very deep charcoal grey. So first thing I'd tell you is, "get this fascination with turning it black out of your head", since I had the same, only to learn the shit wasn't black in the first place.

That said, PF also has a video on this subject. Sadly, no testing of Griot's product. :(

That front plastic on mine is aftermarket and very faded. I've run the Griots on it after giving it the torch treatment but I really just need to pull mine and paint it, upper and lower. Its just so faded the Griots just can't correct it.

Appreciate the recommendation, have not tried that product.

I saw a photo of a 2002 red SR5 with color matched trim (fender flares and front bumper....side trim was still charcoal gray)

Has anyone tried painting those trim items to color match?

The limited trims had that. If TRD then painted flares too.
