Many many many years ago I worked for McDonnell Douglas and if a plane exceeded it's normal cruising speed by 40% that plane would have been grounded until tests were completed. Then again that was many many many years ago and things change... maybe not for the best

We are in the process of changing all the technology on the towers and this is some of the testing to get the new tech working. The old network would run fine, as it is what is handling traffic. To prevent interference we have to disable the old stuff while they test the new. While they are working nothing is working. Stopping them and turning the old tech back up restores services.

 

You guys are missing the technicalities. That speed is ground speed not true air speed. Flying 500knots in a 200knot tailwind nets you a 700knot ground speed but you’re still only going 500 relative to the air around you.

 

There are still added stresses to the aircraft due to the tailwinds and the turbulence viewed in the video. Any stresses beyond normal and accounted for operations are at risk of causing problems. My original point still stands, even if I didn't get into the minutia of the technical aspects.

Well, because what they were doing was killing sites when it wasn't supposed to, this shift's night work was cancelled. I'm not real broke up about it. I like nice quiet shifts for my Friday. I'm just going to keep an eye on stuff, hope nothing breaks on it's own, and enjoy some yootoob. Then it's 7 days off with nothing planned beyond laundry, grocery shopping, and helldivers 2.
