Good Interview with Senior Motor Engineer about Todays Turbo Motors

Tim Esterdahl @testerdahl from Pickup Truck Plus SUV on YT posted a recent video interview with Senior Motor Engineer Alan Falkowski from Dodge/Stellantis about all the new engineering and testing that goes into todays turbocharged motors. Good discussion about engine transformation and design, cooling systems, todays oil, OCI, and better oil contamination remediation. Even though he’s with Dodge, I’m quite confident Toyota is doing all this work and more just based on what we know about our engine’s design. They can do all of the testing they want, and sweet talk, but time will tell regarding reliability of these turbo engines.

It was also amusing for me how in one of his videos Tim kept saying that the guy who designed a hemi was the one who also designed this new v6 turbo that ram is using now, and that it's such a good thing. However, Hemi had issues with the camshaft and lifter failures for 15 years without a fix... So the original engineer isn't really someone to be adored

Thanks. I'm not a Dodge/Chrysler/Stellantis fan at all. Have never owned one and never will. Ford either. My only interest in this video was just in general what auto makers are doing today to re-engineer motors for today's demanding EPA standards. Most notably the elimination of the V8. Not just slapping a turbo or supercharger onto an old motor design. Thanks for the C.C.N. vid link. Watch him regularly. Some real good points on that new motor's design.

 

What do you expect from Stellantis? A company made up of Fiat & Puegot. Not exactly Toyota quality reputation from either company. I'm not sure if Jeep/Chrysler/Ram/Dodge improved or worsened Fiat when they bought them.

 

Do you know how many folks still think their Wrangler is buying American over Toyota or Honda built in the USA vehicles. Also how many folks have no clue how bad their reliability is. They see a shiny new object like a "hurricane" motor and want it. Those marketing folks earn every penny getting Rubes to fork up big $$ for them.

 

Keep in mind the interview is with the engineer who designed it....he's going to have good things to say about it because it is his baby....Very few engineers I've come across will shit all over their own projects.....Now if another un affiliated engineer outside the design team has praise who had nothing to do with that project then you've got a good product there. Thats another thing engineers love is picking apart someone else's design too!! Just sayin the guy isn't going to hop on there and say oh yeah the last couple years of my life developing the hurricane?? oh ya that thing is a piece of shit...not going to happen (the Stellantis mother ship would shut that down real quick).

 

At least on the paper(reading design and specs) hurricane is a robust motor. I dont know of any other OEM's using forged connecting rods in their engines. Really curious how it performs in reliability metrics.

 

Personally with the Hurricane engine the Turbo looks like a PITA of complications being part of the cylinder head which maybe means a new engine for a new turbo?? Seems like a PITA to change and not a fan of it being integrated into the cylinder head. (on PITA think Toyota says the cab has to be pulled to change turbos on the Tundra so potah-toe po-ta-toe). I will admit I didn't watch either of the videos, just read a bit on it in the past...

Just wait to see how much these hurricane equipped vehicles like the $123,000 Wagoneer drop in the used market a few years from now. It is like Land Rover, BMW or Mercedes. They get really cheap the more miles get put on them.

 

A glossed over thing is that the S.O. Hurricane is 89 Octane Recommended, it doesn't get those numbers on 87. The H.O. Version is Premium 91 Required.

 

Many Toyota dealers are doing turbos through the front wheel wells now not lifting the cab. Initially with the ‘22 Actuator issue that was all they knew to do. (lift the cab)
