I have an opportunity to buy a clean 2007 RCSB 5.7 4x4 TRD Off-Road with 100k miles that had 3 owners(1st owner = 7 years 13k miles, 2nd owner = 5 months 7k miles, 3rd owner = 18k miles 3 years) (private sale) for $15k or a 2008 Double cab 4X4 5.7 Tundra Grade Base (bench seat, column shifter) with 67k miles, one owner (Hyundai dealer - recent trade in), 1 minor accident and was serviced the first 37k miles at the Toyota dealership (Carfax verified) clean except for rusty brake lines and needs 1 tpms sensor that I will try to get these done by dealer, for $18,750 OTD (I got the price down $750 and tried to get it lower but dealer would not do, so $18,250 + $500 Doc fee. Orig list price was 19k) Btw, it also comes with a nice topper shell.

My plan is to put on a four wheel Project M truck camper build (low profile pop up style). I have no kids or wife. Which truck would you get in my situation? I had my heart set on getting a RCSB with its tighter turning radius and can just fit in my standard garage. However, the double cab could come handy for extra storage but its longer so tougher to park and won't fit in the garage. Any feedback would be appreciated.

PS. I added a poll to vote on which truck you would get for my application and circumstances.

Yeah after pulling up kbb it shows the price is right (I forgot to add that it comes with a topper shell that I will sell for 1k). But I have yet to see a 2008+ DC 4x4 5.7 with as low as 67k miles or less for less than 19k besides mine. I see so many 2007 and 2008 tundras with 150k+ miles for 15k.

I would read this thread before you stick a FWC on either of those trucks. The bed design in both of those trucks (6.5' bed) isn't strong enough to carry that much weight on the bed rails AND survive significant offroad abuse. You can see an example of what a Project M will do here:

There is some decent in cab storage in the RCSB, have you looked at it yet?

Thanks for the feedback. I contacted the grimy salesman and tried to get them to fix the rusty brake lines and bad TPMS sensor and they declined. The good thing is they did give me my deposit back after canceling the deal.So that's over with. I've pretty much come to the conclusion that these Tundras are rust buckets in the rust belt and areas where they use salt in the winter. The RCSB I'm looking at is covered with fluid film underneath and you needs to reapply that crap year round or have someone do that. I've never done that to any Lexus I ever owned and never had problems with rot besides just light surface rust. However my old chevy van is being eaten alive by rust.

RC doors are big. I have a RCLB and the door is huge. Open and close it a few times
to see if you like it. It makes parking another thing to think about. I’m short and there
is way too much space behind the seats. So if you don’t need the rear seat take a look.
I’m used to mine now after 2+ yrs but RC’s aren’t for everyone for sure.

I test drove one RCSB locally and I wouldn't really want it any bigger so I guess I need to stick to a RC. The big attraction to me is being able to fit in the garage and not dry rot outside like my neighbor's old truck. I had to let that RCSB go mentioned in my original post because it was just way too far from me to drive back home at this present time. The double cab I was going to buy got canceled because they refused to fix those rusty rotted brake lines. So now I'm back to square one looking for a RCSB that isn't rusted out or beat up as a work truck with 200k+ miles.

Not sure where you are located, but agree on the rust. My daughter purchased two Tundra’s within the last year. Her first purchase is now mine. It’s a 2007 CrewMax Ltd. It was heavily oiled, but rust was attacking under the coating of oil and dirt. Does the undercoating help? Yes, but there are plenty of areas that are rusty. The seller advised us that he “patched” two holes in the bed. A couple weeks ago, I found one of those “patches” on my driveway. It was a piece of bare metal with a huge mess of caulking on it. Lol! Not sure where the hole is as there is a bed liner, and I can’t see any holes from underneath. I’ll fix it properly in the spring. I replaced the two rear lower quarter panel braces a few weeks back as they had rusted through. Also, the cross member under the rad was really rusty. Of course, Toyota in its’ infinite wisdom, made it into a piece of Swiss cheese with a dozen or more holes. I media blasted it last summer, and applied etching primer, topcoat, and a Rust Check spray to the inside. Both front disc brake dust shields had rusted away which I replaced last year. The newer Tundra is a 2011 Double Cab Limited. It’s in better condition overall, but when I changed the oil on it last month, I noticed her dust shields were also rusted away, and were in worst shape than the ones in the 07. These trucks are now 17 and 13 years old respectively, and here in the rust belt, that is getting to be a ripe old age. My 08 MDX is rusting away in worst ways as was our 11 RDX.
I do agree with your comment about the Lexus. I have a 97 LX450 which was practically rust free until about 6 yrs ago. I should have dealt with it then, but had too much on my plate. I’m in the process of repairing the rust, and plan on taking it on an off-road trip with my buddy this summer/fall to the US Midwest.

Seems like the DC might be a better deal, but those RCSBs are somewhat hard to come by and like you said it has a shorter turning radius and you'll have an easier time parking it. I guess the question really is just how important would the in-cab storage of a DC be to you. If it's not that important, it seems like you are more interested in the RC.

It is a shame we have to deal with rusty trucks up North. However, there are some rusty trucks down South too that people from up North trade in down there. I foolishly ended up with one when I lived in South Florida back in the day and it started leaking gas from a rusted fuel tank, I had to trash that truck because rust just ate up like a cancer. Toyota makes better vehicles in Japan. Toyota should have never hooked up with American companies with their trucks, however, they wanted to market that "made in America" bs. I don't give a crap where its made I just want a quality vehicle that is going to be reliable and last.

I canceled the DC sale because they refused to fix the rust brake lines, it some surface rust on the frame here and there and on the leaf springs, eventually, it will be a rust bucket. I had to kill the sale of the RCSB too because it 28 hours away from and just too far to drive back home for me at this time because I can't take that much time off. So I'm back to square one looking for a RCSB 4x4. I'll stick with the RCSB tho, I prefer the shorter turning radius and can put it in my garage. I don't have a family so I don't need the extra seating the DC has to offer.

I agree on scarcity of a regular cab. I am a longbed 4x4 person and find them to be rare but a RCSB is rarer still.
Perhaps expand your search, I am in California and none of my Tundra's have an iota of rust.

I say double cab but literally any vehicle will rust. Just the way it is. I will say my tundras frame though is pretty damn clean but other parts are definitely rusty. I’m kind of browsing for another truck and have found a niche dealer that picks very clean trucks from out of state, but then I think they are asking to much for them. I don’t really think car shopping is fun anymore and I think everything in the world is overpriced. Also KBB is shit, maybe private sales but as Coloradotj said dealers only use it when it benefits them.

Nice! What Tundras do you have? I'm looking all over the entire country. However, most of the warm states don't have many 4x4 trucks for sale. They are all mostly 2wd.

Yeah dealers want a fortune for trucks. I hate dealing with a dealer and some of the slimy sales people. I found a great RCSB and he put me on hold on the phone and sold it someone else and lied about that person being at the dealership when the sales manage said the customer wasn't. I'm still pissed off about that.

Most car salesmen suck, and it drives me mad. I met a really cool one at a Chevy dealership last week though. Used to be a cop. Chill dude

But then I was dealing with one last month who has been watching way to much Andy Elliot. Kid drove me nuts. Took forever for him just to tell me the price, to busy trying to sell me fucking detailing packages, Jesus dude. Even if I found a truck I liked at their dealer I wouldn’t buy it. Called me about 12 times next two days.

There’s good and bad out there in any profession though so it’s just not car salesman.

2000 limited ranch truck now. 2008 SR5 DCLB and 2021 DCLB all 4x4's. Check the SF bay area. The trucks are everywhere. That SB 4x4 will be hard to find though anywhere you look. Zero rust here on these unless it is a transplant or surf vehicle. We have a ton of 4x4 Tundra show rigs I call 'em.
