New Purchase with a couple of Questions

First off, I am glad I found this forum. I had a couple of questions.

1. I purchased the '24 1794 edition and love it. However, I noticed in the door the plastic is already starting to get a little dirty getting in and out of the vehicle. I was wondering if there were any metal or similar coverings you could get to protect that over time.

2. For those that have bought a bed cover, do you recommend going with the hard 3 piece type or the less expensive leather version. I like the looks of the hard one, just not the price that is almost 2.5 times the leather one.

The hard cover is an extra deterrent to thieves, otherwise it is personal preference. I had a roll up one on my old GMC and now have the factory hardcover 3 pc on the Tundra. My only complaint with the hard cover is that you will not have full access to the bed without taking it off. And then you have to drive with the cover up, blocking your view on the mirror. Your model may have the camera views which is a big plus. So this has actually been more of a situation than I thought it would be. With the rollup you have nearly full bed access. I would probably still pick the hard cover even with just for the extra security.

That’s the one…I had a RollnLock on other trucks but no room to spare on the 5’5”. And why waste the space anyway? The price point for what you get on the x4’s is hard to touch.

 

Agree on X4s. Easy install and no drain tube to mess with.

 

I bought my 2018 used and it came with a foldable Toyota Tonneau cover. It is really heavy duty (hard material for the top) and holding up very well considering it is in it's 6th year in Florida weather.

Although that roll up one looks interesting. Is the top material heavy? My company provided Silverado has a vinyl (material?) tonneau cover that moves in the wind and looks like it won't last many years.

Sweet I was wondering how they worked with the bed rails already in there. Just cut my boards this weekend- I am sure they are going to be one of the more useful accesories haha

 

There are aluminum slats that run across the entire cover so it's definitely hard. You can't cut through it with a knife but as with just about any cover, I'm sure a pry bar could get past the locking mechanism if someone wanted to get in.

Depends on budget but I’d recommend the Diamondback HD cover. I was doing a lot of research prior to buying and had the Diamondback on my prior Tacoma. Read stories about bakflip’s customer service going really down hill a lot which kept me from buying one of those. Retrax has the canister that takes up bed space so didn’t want to go that route either. Peragon was in the running but read a lot of issues with that. Figured at the end of the day the diamondback served me well on my Tacoma for 3+ years and decided I would just go that route. Been happy with it so far but only had it a few weeks. Plus it only takes about 10 minutes to remove so if I know I’m hauling big stuff then I just take it off before I leave. Or just throw it on top of the cover and strap down. More expensive but is pretty rock solid. Plus their customer service is top notch

 

I have the X4S, but the dang tabs at the end break off really easy. I’ve already have to warranty them twice. It’s a pretty bad design on the corners.

I will say they are quick to ship out replacements.

 

I live in Alaska, I had the BAK Revolver on my 2015 Tundra for over four years before the truck was totalled, and I had the Bak Revolver installed two days after I picked up my 2023 1794 a year ago, and I have never had a problem with either of them, even with snow and ice build up on the covers. I did not install them myself, but had them installed by the shop that sells them.

 

OK, but this problem with the X4S is well known. I’ll take a picture of mine when I get back. Just broke on Saturday, same one, third time.

The tabs are super flimsy.

 

Definitely interested to see what's breaking on yours. Haven't had any issues with mine but it's only been 6 months.

 

Covers are highly subjective, and dependent on how you use your truck.

I bought, and recommend diamondback HD without hesitation. Price is high, not gonna lie but I almost love it more than the truck

 

I found these photos on my phone of my first cover that needed an entire warranty replacement. The X4S wouldn’t lie flat. This first one, both tabs broke off.

The second one they sent does lie flat, but I still have broken tabs. I used marine adhesive based on a recommendation from another member here who was having the same issues. It helps for sure, but didn’t solve it. Anyway, I’ll post a pic of it on the truck when I get back tonight.

 

Had this happen on a previous truck and replaced it with a BAK MX4 (flip-fold) which I also bought for my '24 Tundra. While it does block the back window if opened all of the way, I have the pano mirror so it doesn't bother me (and rarely open it all the way). I really like the roll up, but not the design of the ends.

Also, might look at the new Diamondback Switchback, combo rugged / folding cover...

Marine adhesive helped keep it on for a bit longer.

I took a look at mine and can see where those could be an issue. I'll be putting some marine adhesive on just in case. Good to know they are standing behind their warranty. Thanks for the pics.

 

Like others have mentioned it’s subjective depending on how you will use it. I like a flush mounted look vs the raised diamondback. RollnLock and Retrax take up much needed space. X4 for me regardless of the issues with the corners

 

Well OP, now you’ve had a vote for almost everything out there. I’m a tri-fold fan. Had the OEM one on my Tacoma for the 8 yrs I had it. Now on my ‘23 a BAK MX4. Very happy with it too. Fully removes in minutes if needed with no tools. And if fully folded up as mentioned, rear camera provides the view. (you can fold just two panels flat if you need and tie downs are built in) *Very tiny rain leakage in the corners on most all covers. Get the rubber bed mat. Any water that gets by in the corners goes under the mat keeping your cargo dry. Also holds stuff in place. Good luck choosing.

 

Forgot to add that diamondback also make a tri flip “switchback” cover.
Same high quality as the hd model just a different “setup”.

diamondbacks will outlive the truck they instal on, and resale will be higher than others
