Why did you buy a Tundra?

Needed to replace the Taco and can't get a new Ram with out the stupid hybrid system, would have kept the Taco over buying a gmc/chevy, and Fords turn into bbq grills.

I bought a 24 Tundra to replace the 22 F-150 King Ranch I had. I owned a 2012 F-150 prior to the 2022 and it was a great truck with very few problems over the ten years I drove it. The 2022 on the other hand, was a constant source of frustration over the 13 months I owned it, with a constant string of new issues that appeared every month or so. When Ford, after having replaced the torque converter, told me the drivetrain shudder I was experiencing was a normal characteristic of the modern F-150, the search for a new truck was on.

I was leaning toward a Denali with the 3.0 baby Duramax, but I asked a guy at the gas station one day how he liked his new GMC pickup. He said he really liked it, but he needed to get it checked out because it had a transmission shudder. Since the GM 10 speed was co-developed with Ford, that made sense.

After a lot of research, I went with the 24 Tundra and so far, I couldn't be happier.

Why did I buy a truck? Because I wanted the versatility that a truck provides.

Why did I buy a Tundra over the big three? I thought the Ford was butt ugly and have had poor experience with other Ford trucks (specifically the dealers servicing them). I thought a Ram looked like a 20-something's vehicle and was also wary of the engine changes. I also won't buy a gas GM or a baby Duramax, so since I wanted a half ton pickup, the Toyota was a logical choice. Also, I think the Toyota is the best looking vehicle out of all of them and the interior, handling, and ride are second to none IMO. I get comments at least weekly about what a nice looking truck I have from random strangers in parking lots.

Had a 2017 GMC Sierra Denali…got a bent push rod because of AFM. Had hard shifting transmission issues along with the shuddering. My mechanic has worked for GM for 30 yrs and drives a Tacoma. I asked him why he stayed at GM…he said because he would always be guaranteed a lot of work. He said go get a Tundra!

I bought a Tundra (again) because the last one was super dependable for 16 straight years! I bought my ‘07 brand new. I needed a work truck that could haul just about everything, so I got a double cab SR5 with an 8’ bed. That back seat did double duty hauling tools during the week, and the whole family on the weekends. It was a perfect truck.

I’m having a hard time saying the same for my ‘24. Don’t get me wrong the new truck is amazing, I just think the changes from the 2nd gen Tundra are not right for me.

    Here’s a list:

I’m worried about the fiberglass bed, I’m afraid that it’s going to shatter from impacts (it’s also excessively smooth and everything slides like crazy).

Same horsepower, torque, and payload as 16 years ago. Couldn’t some of that have increased?

The backseat is smaller than it used to be.

I miss having door pockets and extra storage. I miss the double glove box and sixth seat. The center console on this truck is a huge waste of space.

I won’t get into any gripes about how all the “safety” features of this truck are a real nuisance sometimes. I will say though that this truck has forced me to adapt to it, and it has really slowed me down.

With all that, I still think the Tundra is the best deal out there. No other manufacturer offers an 8’ bed with a backseat at this price. Also, Toyota’s standards for parts and systems is exceptionally high, I could never go back to owning a Ford again. Durability and dependability are key. I’m looking forward to that with this truck.

More comfortable and interior volume then my Tacoma. Stronger engine.

You mean your 2008 Tundra didn’t have 479 ft/lb of torque and 1500+ payload and get 24mpg highway?

After 3 weeks of negotiations & me walking away twice, the dealer finally figured out I was standing firm. It was during COVID, the beginning of a new month, the Tundra had been on the lot for 2 months sooo i got the value I wanted for my trade in & the price I was willing to pay for the Tundra.
