    Hello 1st Gen Tundra People!

I’m STILL trying to figure out how to make Toyota & the Dealership make good on the Frame Recall/Rework they did on my 2005 Toyota Tundra Double Cab SR5 – 4X4 TRD.

A little back story…. I’m the ORIGINAL owner of this Toyota Tundra. I’ve used the SAME Toyota Dealer for Purchase, Maintenance/Service and Repairs.

    2005 Toyota Tundra

    Double Cab

    4.7L V-8

    4X4 – TRD

    Here’s the details:

    · I purchased the truck NEW from the Toyota Dealer in Burnsville, MN

    · I’ve had the same Dealer perform the Maintenance/Service, Repairs and Recall/Reworks.

    · I’ve been HYPER aggressive on Maintenance/Service since the Truck was NEW.

    · The same Toyota Dealer performed the NTSB Mandatory Recall/Rework on the Frame of my Truck.

    · The Dealer “inspected” the Frame on my Toyota Tundra and decided to “Coat” the Frame rather than REPLACING it, which is what should have been done.

    · Shortly after the Dealer performed the Recall/Rework, the material they SPRAYED on the ORIGINAL Frame was coming off and there WAS RUST on the material coming off the frame (their Recall/Rework applied material) as well as on the Frame it was applied to.

    · I informed the Dealer of the condition and our concerns regarding it. We expressed our concerns the Frame WILL FAIL over time as a result of the WRONG Rework being performed. The DEFECTIVE Frame (not properly coated at the factory) SHOULD have been REPLACED, NOT sprayed as they did.

    · After YEARS of trying to get the Dealer and Toyota Motor Company USA to address the issue by Visits, Calls & e-mails, we go nowhere! We were Finally told, it’s a NTSB Recall and what was on the Recall Bulletin was ALL they were going to do. Basically…. POUND SAND, it’s yours!

    · From the time we noticed the FAILED Recall/Rework, we also asked the Dealer to INSPECT the Frame for the Rust Issue as found in the Recall/Rework Bulletin. EVERY oil change, Maintenance/Repair visit and ANY time the Truck was in for something we asked for this inspection and documentation of findings. Often the work order was missing the information for this request. When asked why, we were told it was fine or it got inspected but was OK.

    · The LAST time our Truck was in to the dealer as an oil change. I had noticed something prior to bringing it in. There is/was two (2) holes in the side of the frame just behind the front Wheel. It was two LARGE RUST HOLES! I went in for the oil change and as in the past, I asked for the Frame to be inspected and the findings documented. The Service Writer came out to inform me the truck was ready after the oil change. I paid the invoice and walked out to my truck with him. Reading the invoice as I walked, I noticed the inspection request was actually documented and the work done had nothing other than the letters “NVP”. I asked about the frame inspection and the findings. I was told it was in fact performed and “NVP” stood for “No Visual Perforation”. It was at this time I took my Cane (I’m Disabled) and stuffed the tip into one of the RUST HOLES in the side of the Frame. The Service Writer’s eyes got HUGE and he said, “I’ll be right back”. He returned with the 2nd or 3rd Service Manager since this debacle started. The Service Manager looked, got upset and asked “who did the work”? Long story, longer…. Only a few technicians are certified to do this inspection and the tech that did it was NOT one of them. I reviewed the history of this issue with him and asked him to champion getting a NEW FRAME to address the DEFECTIVE Rework/Recall repair performed by THEM! He said he would and I left.

    · After a few weeks of not hearing anything, I contacted the Service Manager to see where we are at with it. I was told, “The Recall/Rework was performed and they are not going to do anything more, it’s the NTSB paperwork and that’s all they can do”.

    · The Toyota Dealership/Toyota Motor Company USA have performed the WRONG option as found on the NTSB Recall/Rework for this Toyota Tundra. The Frame HAS FAILED as outlined in the NTSB Recall/Rework due to the DEFECTIVE Frame AND the WRONG Recall/Rework repair being performed. Basically, the Frame WAS DEFECTIVE & the Recall/Rework Repair was ALSO DEFECTIVE!

Our Toyota Tundra just hit 110,000 miles on it. Up until I became Disabled, I washed it every week and waxed it monthly. It’s been well cared for and in GREAT condition (EXCEPT FOR THE FRAME). I had planned on owning this Truck for a LONG time as I love it and it’s ideal for us.

Fast forward to today and we have a 2005 SCRAP Toyota Tundra that has totally lost its ability to do what it was DESIGNED to do. It is no longer safe. Is VALUE & ABILITY TO BE USED has been GREATLY reduced due to the ERRORS made by Toyota & the Toyota Dealer.

I know there are “Repair Kits” to weld on the DEFECTIVE Frame/Frame Repair. We NEED Toyota to step up to the plate and make this RIGHT! Now that I’m Disabled, this situation has left us in a VERY bad position as we can’t afford to replace the Tundra we love.

Anyone out in the 1st Gen Tundraverse or a GREAT Lawyer have any advice or help in getting Toyota to address their DEFECT(S)? Frame Replacement is what it NEEDED at the time of Recall/Rework and it STILL needs!

We’re behind the 8-Ball here. Toyota & the Dealer did us wrong and now we are holding the “bag”!

    HELP!!!

Thank you in advance for your time and assistance!

    Willie

Unfortunately you’re in the same boat with a lot of us who got the spray treatment with Noxodul 300 only to have it not last and just cover the problem. If there’s a class action lawsuit about this I’d like to know as well but unfortunately there is not. Good luck though.

You got 19 years… I’m sorry you feel like they screwed you on the frame issue but devoting time or energy into fighting Toyota over a decaying 20 year old truck seems like a waste. It isn’t like this truck has been sitting in AZ or So Cal.

I tend to consider myself a rather cultured fellow, who knows a lot of memes, a buttload of generational slang from all walks of life, but never in my life have I heard "butthole bingo".

I'm officially adding this to my mental dictionary. Love it.

    This sucks!
I have a 2006 Tacoma that fell into the same recall. My service manager knew I am as anal a prick there is when it comes to my truck, so even though it "qualified" to be sprayed, my service manager looked at me and said "don't worry, we are going to get it replaced it for you!" I had the frame replacement as well as the rear leaf springs too, and to this day it is perfect.
Bottom line: it's the dealership that screwed the pooch and you're left with the mess. I would seek other dealerships for their opinions but I don't think you'll get very far without a lawsuit. Corporate will only listen if you feel your life is in danger by driving it. If the repair has failed and your safety is in question, then corporate will address it. Stress that you fear for your safety, NOT that you want a free replacement. Have the dealership you were at when you poked the hole with your cane through the frame, document the unsafe nature of the vehicle.
    Good luck.

Unfortunately it seems a lot of dealers back in the day used this as the easy way out. And a lot of people that didn't stand their ground and tell them "you're F***IN' replacing this frame" got the butthole end of this bingo game

Find a consumer protection lawyer that sues autos and sue the dealership/anyone else you can think of. The goal is to get them to settle for a frame replacement to get rid of your case. Possibly, however, they’ll move to dismiss your lawsuit on the basis of the NTSB bulletin (or whatever the recall document is legally called) as a defense to being sued: it said we could do one of two things, and we did one of those, so this case must be dismissed.

May be worth a shot if you have as well-documented of a case as you seem to have.

Would the outcome have been any different had they replaced the frame? They would have just sprayed it with the same shit and maybe prolonged the inevitable a few years longer. I assume they salt the roads in MN during the winter?

not necessarily; I would call around to other dealers and ask them if they’re willing to do the frame swap. There was a Tacoma locally that had their frame swapped a few months ago - under the recall. Toyota still might honor it. The way that I understand it is the dealership has to submit the claim to Toyota corporate. Depending on how hard they lobby, Toyota will either honor or deny the request. Given that you have record of requests and such, there may be a dealership that advocates on your behalf. I spoke to a buddy who runs a local high volume Toyota dealership and he said they LOVE these types of repairs because Toyota pays the dealership huge money to perform the work…..

I didn't read the entire post. At any point in the last 20 years did you take measures to protect the frame from salt? Did you use Fluid Film or any other product?

... which, honestly, is a requirement living in the rust belt, regardless what brand of vehicle you're using.

I remember the F-series Ford someone posted on here that had the frame totally eaten through, ready to fold in half. It did manage to do a hell of a lot before it finally ate shit in the YouTube video, though. I think this was the video. Someone posted it on here in the last couple months.

I didn't read the entire post either. Toyota views the recall as "Open." If your truck has never been inspected, frame swapped, or coating applied.

The recall is "Closed" for you if you've had the frame swapped, or sprayed. At the time, the spray was considered a remedy for the issue.

Frames are made to order and that recall is over with. Probably not much you can do.

Thank you to all that have replied! Extra Thanks to those who actually took the time to read the post nd actually understand..... the issue STARTED right after they sprayed the frame. It was a DEFECTIVE REWORK! That was what 10 or so years ago. The Dealer and/or Toyota SCREWED UP! If some jerk-off screwed you out of the value of your truck, I bet you would be a bit upset too. Yes.... it's 19 years old now. I've been chasing these BOZO's for many years to make good for the bad repair.

And regarding the new frame doing the same.... the issue with the original was Toyota did NOT coat/paint the frame prior to the assembly of the truck. This improper/lack of paint/costing was what caused the failures and the recall. So.... NO, it would not be the same!

    Thank you for your time!

I LOVE Kevin and Junkyard Digs! Yeah, he abused that truck for a long time before the frame finally gave up. Through a field full of deep bumps and holes.
