Your best bet is to call Keith @dirtydeeds industries and inquire about your options and pricing. He can explain all of the pros and cons of each choice without pushing you to purchase anything. Good luck!

I have 5.29s on 35s and front and rear Eatons. But the price tag of lockers is 3k basically alone, start adding in the cost of gears and master install kit…..

I think 5.29s is the way to go on 35s and up.

Going from 4.30’s to 5.29’s with 34’s was a major improvement.

From the way I understand Keith @dirtydeeds , the 5.29s do the best job of working with your transmission gearing to keep the engine in its power band, especially if you’re running >33” tires. Most people says it drives "lighter" and feels like a whole new truck. The downside is higher RPMs at cruising speed on the highway.

Even though I off-road quite a bit, I haven't needed a rear locker yet, and I think I would enjoy a limited slip just as much.

the higher RPms isn’t even noticeable.. engine is quieter and truck doesn’t feel like it’s working

5.29s with a Powertrax Grip Pro LSD in the rear is a great option for all of us but the extreme offroad group. For the 99% regular use, you’ll benefit much more with a good LSD than a true locker. A regular locker is great for real offroad use.

It’s been a couple years, but I think I was in the $3,500 to $4,000 range for gears, Grip Pro, oil, and install. It’s a big investment, but with a big return. You’ll need a good tune to take full advantage of the new gearing.

And, no. The extra couple hundred rpm WILL NOT decrease your mileage. I don’t believe there is a single downside to regearing our trucks.

Tuning options have been hashed out on here a million times, and I understand there are a lot of good options.
That said, I had mine dyno tuned at a local shop with my HP Tuners MPVI3. Since then, I’ve made multiple small changes to dial in the transmission. I prefer to make one small change at a time so I can monitor exactly what did what.

Look for a local place that can do REM polishing for the gear sets, or you can mail them out to Gear One out of Phoenix. 150$ per set to be polished

Holy smokes! That sounds steep, but we’re not all in the same markets.

I bought the gears through a buddy’s shop for about $1,100 when MSRP was in the $1,300 range.

I picked up my Grip Pro from Amazon, of all places, for about $600 if I remember correctly. It was stupid low compared to anywhere else, and the price jumped up after I bought. Must have triggered their algorithm into thinking it was a good seller again?

Labor and oil was $1,600 at Keizer Brake in Eugene, OR. Todd and Cary there do great work if you can handle their lead times. They are typically booked out for months.

Figure another $100 in oil after break in.

That puts mine at $3,300 all in. Had I paid retail for the gears and diff, closer to $4K. Todd did say he would be increasing labor after mine, but that couldn’t push it over $4,500 all in.

Where did you pay $5,500 and what was the breakdown for the bill?? Even if you paid $1,500 for gears, $4K to the shop sounds too high…. Not even 20 hours of work for a slow guy.

If you would sweat over ~200rpm then yep don't go to 5.29's, that is on 35's

It was about 4k for gears and install kits and about 1500 for labor and oil.

In total I had twenty hours in the job. Gotta remember, wires gotta be ran for e locker hooked up to switch’s etc.

Also shop did test drive the vehicle and some other things.

to be fair, I got quotes at 6300/6500 and ended up going with the most expensive. I used the same shop for my suspension and haven’t had an issue.

    I also have 5.29s I can’t hear at all….take it for what it’s worth.

Wow! You have a 2.5 Gen 5.7, don’t you? MSRP for the gears from Nitro is about $1,500 now. Both axles with install kits. I’m assuming Sierra is close to the same, give it take.

REM polishing? Cryo treat? Curious why it was so much!

Metrowest, MA, I think I was at 5500 or 6000 all in, including Grip Pro and having the splines clearanced as a result of the Grip Pro. This was for Nitros.
