1st Gen. Lunch Table - General Discussion

I'm in a similar situation. To replace the lower control arms on our RAV4 I have to unbolt and lower the subframe. That's why the parts have been sitting in my garage since Thanksgiving.

 

I didn't say how this happened. It wasn't a kick back/slip etc.. I was switching to a thin cut disc on the m18 angle grinder. I never use a tool, just grip the disc with my hand and break it loose. Somehow I managed to hit the trigger and it locked on while my hand was firmly gripping the disc, SURPRISE!!
Yup should remove the battery.

 

Stay away from portable circular saws. I think Milwaukee makes one for the m18.

You lucked out big time there! I’m glad your hands ok! My trick is to just buy more grinders so i don’t ever have to swap discs.

Well, discouraging news on the GM 6.2 rebuild. Motor may have eaten itself. Crank is tight, verified timing was correct, then pulled the timing chain and rotated the crank with nothing else attached. Crank is tight. Think the bearings might be toast. Sigh, pulling the engine again. It was something we discussed early in the rebuild. The possibility that all that metal that made its way into the motor could have ruined it. It was parked running with a lifter knock. We took a chance and cleaned it out and reassembled her. She ran great, until she shut down. Guess we weren’t able to save her.

 

dude....lame. Like that sucks a lot. Where’s the dislike button?

 

He definitely gets an A for effort. That’s a lot of work to do and have that happen. I had a similar defeat today with a compressor

Reading up some more on "6.2 seized after lifter failure" and it's quite alarming how many are out there. It's also alarming how many have had subsequent engine failures after complete replacement of engine. I do not envy my BIL ad his GM problem at the moment. It' a nice truck, but these motors are not confidence inspiring. If we swap motor and get it going again, I'm gonna encourage trading into something more reliable. He doesn't want a Tundra due to the fuel mileage. I'm like yours gets 0 miles period right now. Pick your poison.

 

I'll take low fuel mileage with reliability over anything else, in my opinion. Yeah the mpg's hurts my wallet but that's why I have a 98 Camry for the commuter.

 

One of my good friends really likes GM vehicles, so much that he has to buy a new one about every 100,000 miles...simply because some major problem happens to them right about at that mileage.

 

When you factor in how much this will cost him, the additional fuel doesn't come close to what he's going to shell out. The new Tundra gets better MPG too.

 

He drives a lot for work, around 18-20k miles a year. Averages close to 19mpg on 305/55/20 meats and a level kit. Would likely get 15 mpg with that setup in my truck. At $3 a gallon, his fuel cost annually is $3157. It would be $4k a year in the tundra. 7 years or so to break even on the engine swap (around $6k let's say if we end up doing it), but zero downtime in the Tundra. More like 12 years if he pays a shop $10k for an engine. He's only got $1200 in the repairs so far on his current motor. Pull and tear down will be next week. We'll see where this leads.

 

its weird to me that people don't do this. You can get a 4.5" angle grinder at harbor freight for like $20 and then occasionally you'll get their dirt cheap one for FREE just for buying something. I'm at 2. One was free. I'll try to stop at 4. I don't think I have a reason for more than 4.........think......

 

For me, it was just not realizing that a second grinder would be beneficial. Then after many years of swapping discs around, i was like...i need to buy more grinders! I scoured craigslist for used Milwaukee grinders. If a nice looking one popped up for less than $50 i would pounce on the deal. I have one more milwaukee grinder that lives in my tool van that didn’t make it in the pic.
