Hey yall! So i messed up.... I was doing doughnuts in my 07 tundra in the rain and went a little too rough with the truck. When i brought the steering wheel back to center and stopped the doughnuts, the steering got really hard to turn. It started making the infamous power steering high pitch squeal when i gave it any pressure turning left or right. It didn't make any noise while going straight though.

I started it a few days ago after doing some research and I'm still stuck between if it is the rack or just the pump.

When the engine is cold, its easy to move the steering wheel and doesn't make any noise (maybe a little). But once it warms up, she squeels when i move it.

I did notice when I rev the engine in park and turn the wheel, it does leak fluid out of the pump near one of the hose endings. I can get a picture/video if needed.

I'm worried that if i just change the pump, then I just wasted a bunch of time wrenching when it was the rack.

How can i decipher if its the pump or the rack?

I drained the fluid by popping off one of the lines and it looked fine. Replaced the fluid and nothing changed.

Photos? Which line is leaking and how much. Did you perhaps crimp one of the lines?

Maybe the drive belt tensioner... I snapped mine on my Celica and it will squeal like a pig everytime I moved the steering wheel... Power steering puts tension on the drive belt and the tensioner shifts in its place. Just my 2 cents..

Yep. My entire steering system had to be replaced 2 weeks ago. 2011 Tundra. Toyota had a recall for certain Tundras for a power steering pump issue. The pump starts eating itself from the inside. Blew out both my rack seals. Had to replace pump, reservoir, rack and hoses. $5700. To remove the rack, the front end needs to be dropped.

Wow.... That's horrible. What were the symptoms? So the recall wasn't covered under Toyota?

The symptoms were, I could not steer. LOL It blew the seals out at the same time and I was dead in the water.
No, my truck wasn't covered in the recall. Go figure. Ha

The recall involved racks manufactured during a narrowly specified period with an imperfection in the machining that caused to seals to fail. I’m not aware of any pump problems in our trucks provided they are properly serviced with the correct fluids.

I was told by the shop that does the work that it was initially caused by an internal problem in the pump.
